My factory 69 z28 quick ratio box is in need of a rebuild, but I'm thinking I need a quicker ratio...

Anyone running an aftermarket MANUAL steering box? What ratio?

Wondering if I should just have my factory one rebuilt or go aftermarket...

I got mine from www.powersteeringpros.com and their service was excellent.
I got the quickest ration box they had, when the salesmen told me he wouldn't recommend it on the street,I said I'll take it,lol:yum:
2.5 turns lock-to-lock I do believe...

They told me the same thing....

I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and go with power steering.

John are you tracking your car or doing any autocross events with it?

I'd need to look but I'm fairly certain lock to lock on my 79TA is around 2.5 turns. It's a WS6 box. I'm wondering if the quick ratio on a first gen some how causes a an imbalance. Then again, autocrossing in a normal first gen will cause an imbalance.

No,I'm still waiting to convert to rear discs and upgrade the fronts, still all stock Z/28 components,if this economy ever recovers I may get closer to completing that.

You already have the quick box,why not just look into rebuilding it?

You'd have to ask Mary if a manual box will be a hinderence in auto-x,that I do not know for sure but from they few layouts I've seen,I don't think it would matter either way.

Funny you say that. I'm in the process of swapping out my rear drums with discs and throwing new axles in as well. Also going to try and address a low vacuum issue with the booster. Might look into hydroboost but dont want to drop all that coin right now.

I think you're right, I might just have it rebuilt... Its tough driving around town, but at least I know most people will have a hard time driving it but me.

I'm not too into AutoX events as I am HPDE track days. Love hearing the big block roar off the grandstands :twothumbs

Then have it rebuilt and stay with a manual box,it'll be perfect for the track.
Both of my Z/28's were factory manual steering cars...wouldn't have it any other way.

Manual steering really slows you down at an Autocross by several seconds depending on how tight a course it is.

Agree with Dave and once you get behind, you're toast!!

David and Mary are both correct. Once you get behind with Manual steering, all you can do is slow down. Been there, doing that now with a 16:1 manual box. I thought I was losing 2 seconds with manual steering but thinking back David may be right and I am losing more like 3-5 seconds at least. :machine:
