The California Air Resources Board just offered me $650 cash if they can crush my 1969 Camaro! Wow! An actual letter in the mail offering me cash for my pre 1987 vehicle in these tough economic times! Got to love it! ...It's a good thing my Ex isn't around.

Curtis, I'd gotten those every couple years while I was driving my Camaro. I just toss it every time. And the most I got offered was 500 though.

Well I dont know how much your car is really worth but send them back a counter offer. Make up an official looking aprasial for say $50,000.00 and send it back telling them you will take $45,500.00 for it telling them their offer MUST have been a typo!!!!!!!!

Yeah, and be appologitic about it like..."I'm sorry I know there had to be a typo somewhere, but if your really serious I would consider $45850.00. You know times are hard and I would be willing to part with it at this loss."

thank you for your time, ....(you idiot!)
yours truly,

Unfortunately that letter came from someone who hasn't a clue.

What I can't figure out is does the government really think that these older cars are really the cause of the bulk of pollution. I would like to see a study done on how many are actually still left out there and how many miles they are driven a year. There are not many classic muscle cars that are DD's anymore.

Did they ever pay out the income tax returns that the state owed? I agree, they should not be spending $ on this BS. Can't we get a friggin politician who knows ANYTHING about science, technology, chemistry, physics... even a general understanding on how simple things work would be good. HA! Listen to me... fantasizing about politicians with common sense... I guess I'm the idiot.

So they're broke and want a bail out, but they can offer $650 to crush a car plus all the cost of coordinating said crushing?

They're concerned about the environment, don't do anything proactive stop fires that put out tons of emissions and kills acres of trees, yet they'll waste trees sending notices to everyone with a car older than 1987?

Maybe someone should start importing some of our Southern Oklahoma 4 Door Pre-87 cars to California.. I can line up a bunch of them for 100-150 dollars a piece... That would be a great profit..Ha Ha.. This would also exhaust their funds, and perhaps save a few older cars that deserve to be saved...

Just let me know...

Yeah, but you'd get hit with the $300 / car "environmental impact fee". Another beauty. Are they still charging that to people who bring a car there?

What, the traffic isn't bad enough already, so they want more people? I guess more people stopped on the freeway should help their emissions problem.

This is a program that, to my knowlege has been around for a long time. I have never recieved a letter in the mail for either of my old cars, but I do know my Dad was able to give our 73 Toyota Corolla to the state back in the early 90's for $500, I believe. It was a program they were running to try to get polluters off the road. The only catch was that the car had to run.

You should offer to crush a few of their cars for free, regardless of the year or model. Think of how effective that would be... a few less cars polluting and you save them about $800 bucks after you donate the proceeds from the scrap yard back to them....I wouldn't keep any "dirty money"! LOL

In this state oil companies can buy pollution credits???? They can put on more equipment if they set aside idle and vacant property as a sanctuary...Or buy old cars. (I.E. Unocal and it's SCRAP program.)

No wonder why the "Governator" can't balance the budget!

The sad thing is some people with old muscle cars sitting around will take the $500 instead of selling the car to the guy that continues to knock on the door and ask if its for sale because they think they're getting $500 and a tax break.

Yes they paid taxes. In fact, I got about $350 in interest. From filing to receiving money in my account was only about a month or 5 wks.

If anyone wants to consider one of these offers, call me first. I need a car. LOL

funny if they only knew how many of these "Polluter" vehicles have actually just been sitting in a garage torn apart for the past who knows how many years! My car hasn't polluted in at least a year lol..

And they don't realize how much these cars, and their owners stimulate the local and general economy by buying parts and having work done on them.

They refunded mine. I think they lost a lawsuit that claimed it was a tax on interstate commerce, taxes which the Feds reserve for themselves...
