Finally got out to the storage location of the Camaro I picked up in November last fall. The car was originally fully restored in 1989 with a full sub-frame off, interior refresh and re-paint. Originally the car was a 350hp 396 SS. Engine is original heads and intake, but block was replaced with a punched out 454 for driving purposes and the original block is being stored. Z/28 stripes were added in the late 70's and were kept when it was repainted in 1989. Car only has 250 miles since 89. Everything looked really good except a small scrape on the driver rear quarter that happened when it was being moved several years ago. We pulled out the old fuel from the tank, and filled her up with new juice. All the plugs, points, and condenser were replaced because we weren't getting any spark. After that, the car started right up and we ran it for 20min and everything looked good, no leaks at all. All that is left is to go through the brakes, steering, and safety equipment and make sure she is road ready. It's a little dirty from sitting under a cover and has not been washed in the last 20years. It's only been around the block a few times since 89 to blow off the dust. Once I get it home, the Willwood brakes, Prodigy Bar 4-link, sway bars, Hotchkis parts, and Fikse wheels will go on the car. Here are a few pics from yesterday.

Wow! Stored for 20 years and it cranked right up. That's great! That's also one heck of a return on your investment I bet.

Now, don't even think you can post pictures and not tell anything about the 442 and Impala sitting next to the Camaro. What's the scoop on them?

Cool time capsule. I bet everyone wishes they would've shoved one of those under a cover 20 years ago. Definately a good investment. I could've never let it sit for that long though!

The car was usually run every summer to get the oil circulated and everything good and up to temp, so I wasn't too surprised tha teverything was OK. Things may pop up in the first few weeks of getting it back on the road. The dash pad and some of the dash is apart because the original tach was sticking at 2000rpm. It was taken out for repair but was never re-installed. Just another little thing I get to work on. :)

With the fresh gas, plugs, points, etc and a little down the carb it fired off right away.

Impala was ordered and bought new by his mother in 1964. It's a 64 Impala SS327 comvertible. 60,000 miles and 100% original except for some regular maintenance items. That car was driven until the mid 70's and then parked in their heated attached garage until about 5 years ago when she passed on. She was 97 years old. The car needs a full teardown because it was never started in over 20 years. It would probably fire but the brake system, fuel system and everything would need to be pulled apart and thoroughly cleaned.

Oldsmobile is a 72 442 W-30 coupe, 39000 miles, original owner from a local dealer in town. That car is fully loaded with every option but A/C. Light yellow color with black stripes and a black interior.

LOL :) When he bought that car, he originally went in to buy a big block Chevelle to tow a holiday trailer but this was the last olds they had on the lot. It was a 455 so it would tow the trailer easily and there were only small block Chevelle's left. He did the deal in March 0f 72 and still owns it now.

Well, went to take the car for a spin last night and had no real fuel delivery past 2000 rpm's so I figured the carb might be a little gummed up after sitting for so long. We pulled the carb off and took it apart for a good cleaning. Got that back together tonight, re-installed and it fired right up. Everything seems really good now and it runs really nice. Ran into a couple isues with burned out signal bulbs and the alternator regulator seems to be not working correctly. The voltage gauge seems to spike quite high with increased rpm's so that needs to be addressed. Other than that the prep seems to be coming along. Unfortunatley it looks like rain until Monday so it may have to wait for the maiden voyage until then. :(

Rims are 18". Willwood says you need a minimum of 17" to clear the 6 piston kit.

Nice car! How would you rate the prodigy bar install? Debating on what rear setup I want for my car.

It was pretty good, very standard instructons. Only thing missing was the need to loosen off the fuel hardline on the inside of the pass side frame rail.
Cradle was a tight fit even for a car with original trunk pans and rear frame rails. I wasn't too sure about the attachment bolts to the frame rails but I was assured by Frank @ produgy that these set-ups are used on a lot of autocross cars with no issues so for a street car....no worries.

Man, do you have ANY extra clearance on the outside?? A 1/4" spacer would be REALLY nice if you had the room... You don't have much room on the inside... Even with a short sidewall tire you will have SOME sidewall flex... rubbing may be an issue on the inside...

Finally got the car back on the ground today after getting brakes bled, rough alignment done, and all the bolts checked. I had to set the coilovers at the top to get the equal ride height with the 2" front drop Hotchkis springs. Pretty happy with everything. Lot's of delays waiting for bushings and getting custom braided brake lines done but at least it is finished.

Got the car into the alignment shop today. Everything was pretty close on the laser machine. I was out about a 1/4" on the rear with the alignment and about the same on the front. It needed a good amount of shimming to get the cars camber/castor sorted out but it drives pretty nice now. The prodigy bar seems to be pretty good riding compared to the stock leafs. Much stiffer and more planted ride than before. My stock seats I think are going to be an issue with hard cornering. I already feel myself bracing against the door panel and console.

Went for a drive the other day and broke a rocker. Luckily I got the car shut off before it did any damage or came apart.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/08/RockerFailure004-1.jpg
Pulled everything apart and found a bent pushrod and an oiling problem from another.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/08/Valves001-1.jpg
So I picked up a set of Comp Magnum Roller Rockers, new 3/8" pushrods and guide plates.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/08/RollerRockers001-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/08/RollerRockers002-1.jpg
With the taller rockers, I then had to change to a taller valve cover, and went to a fabricated aluminum unit.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/08/RollerRockers005-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/08/RollerRockers004-1.jpg
They don't seem to take power brake boosters into account with these, so a little cut and re-welding and everything clears OK.

I picked up a set of Lemons Big block headers off a forum with 250 miles on them for a pretty good deal. I had blown a hole in my #4 cylinder header pipe and needed to get new headers anyway so the timing was good. They are a 2 1/4" pipe header with individual pipes and a 4" collector. They were ceramic coated and had O2 bungs for FI or fuel injection when it comes time for that. They fit super tight and some of the clearances are within 1/8". I had to trim my motor mounts for clearance on both sides and remove 1 grease fitting off my suspension to get full lock to lock without contact. No biggy but they are that tight.

I was pretty happy with the product overall, the installation was straight forward with no real hang-ups. Only issue I had was with the lower coil-over mount stud that screws into the billet block. I wish they didn't have steel screwing into aluminum, it's trouble waiting to happen.

I should have them next week and will get some installed photos up. Here are the actual seat pics from Mark at Arizen. Should really help with my sliding issues out of the stock flat bottom units under hard cornering. :)

Also got a set of Eddie Motorsports billet aluminum hood hinges in machined finish. Should help with some slop I have in the original stockers.

Love the aluminum look of the valve covers and cleaner. Painting the other stuff with aluminum paint might look nice. Here's a shot of the engine in a Vette I had. The heads actually are aluminum, but I just painted the block aluminum color.

I had thought about that actually. I have a ZL-1 aluminum water pump already to swap in and I was going to change out the intake manifold to aluminum. Maybe thats next winters project. :)

I finally got some more under hood details sorted out that had been bothering me for awhile. I pulled the hood off and did the underside back to the factory semi-gloss black. The orange was peeling in a few spots and it needed to be cleaned up.

Finally started to pull the car apart for the big color change. I am pretty happy with how solid the car is. Very little rust anywhere, even in the rear quarter lower areas. You can see a lot of the original Garnet Red paint, which is what I think I will be going back to. Here are some pics.

I am really surprised how good the floors, frame rails, etc are in this car. Being that this car has been in Canada it's whole life, I think it must have seen a lot of winter storage and not a lot of rainy weather driving. There is very little sediment in the bottoms of the doors, lower quarters, etc. A quick vacuum to pull out some leaves and debris and it looked pretty good. Car is supposed to have a black hockey stick stripe.

Got the last of the stuff off the car Sunday and Monday nights. I wasn't sure if the 15" corvette rally wheel would fit the back but they cleared the Willwoods by about 1/4" on the caliper. All thats left is put one of the original seats back in and deliver to the body shop next week. :)

Got the car into the shop this morning. Got a call around 4:30pm after they put the wheel to it in a few suspect spots and typical rust areas on these cars. Rear quarters had a ton of brass repair work in them...very bizarre stuff. Roof and trunk were all good with no filler to speak of. The strangest things were on the doors, hood, front fenders, and quarters. It was almost like the last body man was too lazy too align everything. The filler was on the panels and got progressively thicker, the lower you went down the car...on every panel. There was no evidence of damage on the insides of the panels that you could see or feel. When the wheel was put to it, the metal underneath the filler was straight and rust free. The hood was the same...no damage on the underside but about 3/16" thick filler skim coat on the whole hood. It goes tomorrow for media blast to get the rest of the car stripped. I guess we will then see what else is there.

A few cell phone pics from the body shop visit today. We were lucky we pulled out the headliner. When they did, a huge mouse nest and 2 dead mumified mouse corpses dropped on the guys. I guess thats what 20 years of storage gets you. Apparently the mouse poison that was in the car worked!:smoke:
I should have pics of the brass work and all the other metal surprises when it gets back from media blast on Wednesday.

Both times I've had a car blasted it has been full of surprises - yikes! I had read many times of people saying the media gets everywhere and never stops coming out of the car. I figured they just didn't spend enough time with the air gun or the vacuum but hell no..... that stuff gets everywhere and keeps mysteriously appearing after multiple sessions on the bare shell. Make sure they tape off anything you dont want the media to get into and in my case I was very thankful I had removed everything mechanical - was just a rolling shell (the bearings on the dolly were never the same LOL).

Good luck on the outcome!

That is a question we need to discuss. Thats the only trouble spot on the whole door. Not a spec of rust or any issues on the lower edge pinch area at all. Better to spend the time and work out the dent or replace the skin with repro???

I managed to find a couple of lower front fender extensions at a shop that were heavier gauge than most of the other stuff around. About 10 years old, made in the USA quality. Picked up full quarters, floor extensions and outer wheel houses through AMD. I had a feeling they would need to be addressed, so picked them up about a month ago.

I have a dilemma of what to do with the original front fenders. They need repairs and patchwork to the lowers and are going to need a bunch of time to do. One needs a new inner brace to be re-worked. The other has a patch on the inside and outside sandwiching the original metal. Looking at an extra $500 per side in labour to remove, re-work, cut and re-weld. I have a feeling though, that number will increase to around $800 per side. I can get new AMD fenders for $450/side. Dilemma is to go aftermarket or save the originals. What to do????

Why not just weld an aftermarket lower section on the original fender? That way you save most of the original. Nothing fits like the original! I believe they did this to M Pozzi's car. Same issue.

That was the plan but the labor...like I said, I am certain...is going to approach $800/side

Well, the inner bracing structure needs some work too. A couple of pieces need to be removed, replicated, and re-installed.

Easiest thing I would think is to do some searching for modern cars and find one with a similar shade of red but that pops more. Here's an example and it's on a 69 as well. The color is a factory VW color.

https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?74154-Red-Devil-at-SEMA

I'm not much of a fan of red so I can't think of many cars to use as examples. I say paint it blue, yellow, or orange. Oh or the new Camaro Green whatever that's called.

Yeah...that is VW Salsa Red. It's a little brighter red, but I am not going to be a copycat. I would never go back to orange and green is bad luck ( maybe the NASCAR in me).

Alignment is great on the passenger side everywhere. Driver side is another story. We are tight at the cowl and wide at the header. We have decided to put the car on a rack and check the subframe alignment and see if the cowl could be off on the drivers side. We could make everything fit with the sub and cowl in their current position but I am not comfortable with that. If the car is apart...do it once...do it right.

i personally liked your car as it was but see your desire to change. the stock garnet red seems "outdated" but maybe if some more red was added to mixture for "pop".

Had the frame guy come and look at the cowl but everything seems to be pretty close. Ended up relief cutting and doing some adjustments to the fender mount locations and that has given us a lot more adjustment than the factory ever allowed for, which in turn has helped out the gaps a ton.

Put the car up on the hoist prior to final prep to deal with some rocker dents that the car had. While it was up in the air I had the 4 link welded in place. I never was super confident in having the cradle just bolted in place....especially if the car is getting more power.

We have paint! I had a couple of colors to choose from since PPG has more than one formulation for Code 52 Garnet Red. One is a brighter red like Regal Red from the mid 60's GM color chart. The other was a deeper red and matched the rear speaker area, dash end, and floor rails that were still in their original factory color. I think the darker Garnet red will be good with the black stripes amd darker wheels.:)

Here's a few more of the painted part shots. Hood, truck, valences, and front grill are in the booth right now. Car is all washed up and clean, in line and ready to go in the booth tomorrow, for paint Friday and dry time over the weekend. Doors and fenders will be re-hung so they can get the stripes laid out, painted, and then have the final 2 coats of clear applied. Doors and fenders currently only have 1 coat of clear.

looks really great. Are you going to be glossing the tail as well, or going with the traditional flat?

I'm doing a red w/black stripe and a tail blackout as well. I'm toying with the idea of doing all the black in flat, but after seeing this I wonder what it would look like with the two different blacks.

looks really great. Are you going to be glossing the tail as well, or going with the traditional flat?

I'm doing a red w/black stripe and a tail blackout as well. I'm toying with the idea of doing all the black in flat, but after seeing this I wonder what it would look like with the two different blacks.

Thanks! 75% gloss rear tail panel is what I did on mine.

So I did something a little different with the front bumper. I used a spare steel core and brackets and welded the brackets up to the back of the bumper. This allowed the bumper bolts to be welded in and grown down smooth. It then went to powder coat and then in for a coat of paint. Kind of gives the car the enduro bumper look with the steel strength and durability.

So its been a real battle trying to get anything OER or repo to fit even close to original. A few pieces I have been able to modify to make work but it takes lots of time for each piece. Progress has been frustratingly slow but it is happening.

NOS trunk weather seal...so much different from the rubber OER material....and the trunk actually closes with the NOS stuff. Got the jack and POSI decals installed as well. My original POSI decal was a little off level so I did it the same way.....adds a little character I think. :)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/100_4497-1.jpg

Original channels re-installed after a good cleaning and polishing ( lots of orange overspray as they were not removed when car was changed to orange color originally) and OER seals that fit quite well actually (the only thing so far)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/100_4498-1.jpghttps://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/100_4499-1.jpg

Original door handles and lock cylinders polished up. OER side mirror looks great but fits like *** and needs to be replaced.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/100_4500-1.jpg

A set of 20 year old Softseal door rubber seals that fit quite well. The OER ones were over 1/2" off on the mounting points and could not be modified to fit my original doors. Dash all cleaned up from all the body shop dust and re-assembled.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/100_4503-1.jpg

Quarter window seals modified to fit. Lower vent panels fit pretty good though.

Hood stacks cleaned, polished, and re-installed
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/100_4535-1.jpg
Rear spoiler installed. I found some excellent rubber grommets that I put on the studs that replace the original rubber goo and space the spoiler about 1/16 off the deck lid to prevent paint damage to the truck lid.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/100_4536-1.jpg

I took a tip out of "Payback's" thread and used red scotch brite on the valve covers and air cleaner and then sealed them up with Wizard's metal sealer. Worked great and cleaned up a lot of the scratches that would not polish out completely. I also decided to go away from the chrome trim ring around the headlights and just stay with the single polished ring that holds the headlight bulb in place. Everything else around the headlights would be black. I think it gives it a cleaner look and goes with the theme a little better.

So, got the Marquez billet LED driving/signal lights installed and the Anvil carbon chin spoiler in satin finish mounted up. The billet housings are veeery tight in the stock housing holes. I had to persuade the mounting tab locations for the stock lights a little to get them to slide in and seat properly. The Anvil chin spoiler has no mounting holes drilled, so I had to clamp it in position and then drill and bolt each spot with some stainless allen head bolts. Pretty happy with how everything came out.
