ya, I agree with some of it too. Not all the hating, but the comments about no emotion are true. GM did carry this car for so long as a prototype, built up so much hype, and to me, the car just doesnt live up to it. The funny thing about people talking about how the camaro is light compared to the challengers over 4000lbs.. but still... over 3800 for a camaro? that is still really heavy! I understand the need for safety and everything, but drop all the fluff, drop a few hundred pounds and have a nice, bare minumum driving car. They can still have their powered everthing v6 car, but the SS should have been more of a drivers car. They tried to capture the heart of the late 60's, but failed with all of the crap that is in the car. Powerful engine, great handling, great stopping... thats all that they should have been focused on. at least for the SS.
I think they failed on the retro look. Yeah, you can see some of the lines and you know its a camaro, but they didnt capture the heart of the car in my eyes. the challenger looks much better to me. Heck, even the mustang looks better to me, and Im a GM fan.

I like how the A-body dudes are complaining that Edmunds compared the Camaro SS with the Challenger R/T. If you compare them on a price, they're in the same class. And when people go shopping for cars, that's what they'll usually use as a basis for a decision.
The base V8 Camaro, the SS in this case, is in the same league with the base V8 Challenger... the R/T. It's not GM's fault for providing a better base V8 RWD Coupe. And if you compare the SS to the SRT8, the SS still holds it's own even with a way cheaper price tag.
You'd think they (the A-body guys) would put that into consideration... lol.
I hope GM is around long enough to produce a Z/28 version, something with more pep than the SS. To compete with the GT500 and the SRT8. The world would be perfect then.

A-body guys bitching about the aesthetics of another car? That's rich.
From a 65 Barracuda owner: "I think those cars are really UGLY!!!!."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The other interesting stuff is how it was "unfair" to compare a $36k R/T to a $35k Camaro SS rather than the $40k SRT8. Sorry, but price-point is a huge factor if someone is even considering between brands. Sure the guy with an extra $5k would probably step up, but the Camaro is a better value. Or he might buy the Camaro anyways, and with $5k worth of add-ons, beat out the SRT8.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Or how about this:
"We live between the showroom and the service department of one of THOSE dealers, and the lot jockeys like to romp on 'em at the corner stop sign. It made all sorts of go fast noises (V6 style) but it wasn't moving any faster than Hester (my slant 6 Valiant) can muster on a bad day."
Dude, as much as I love the slant 6 engine, to get one even in a light Valiant to move faster than a 14.3 in the quarter, takes a lot of work. I doubt yours is that built.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's amazing how a deep-rooted brand loyalty can make you delusional. Glad I'm not a hard core brand "whatever" guy. Sorry Mopar fanatics, your Challenger is gorgeous too, but the stats speak for themselves.
Actually I don't think any of the new pony cars deserve to be slammed on looks or performance. All three did a really good job, and we should be thankful they even exist.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P.S. I like the Barracuda looks starting in 1967.

Alot of kids with nothing better to do in study hall...
Fixed that for ya'.
There are grains of truth here and there in that thread, but mostly the opinions simply fail by being little more than comments taken from a support group meeting.
None of the new generation Camaro/Challenger/Mustang is as svelte or as graceful as the version of the car it most closely emulates. I don't know if it's regulators who think that everybody needs to be protected against everything (got to protect those poor pedestrians who have already been hit from being hurt hitting stuff that's UNDER the hood, y'know) or stylists who can't get seem to get trucks out of their minds that's more to blame here.
There's no doubt in my mind that all three of these are better as CARS this time around, but getting them there has not been without some cost.

I actually had the corporate twin (Plymouth Valiant) back in the day.
The previous owner had stuffed a dual-quad 318 under the hood (and a too-wide axle out back), and I guess had moved on to another project. As a semi-sleeper, it was a fun car while it lasted (totalled it within six months in an accident involving black ice).

I didn't read the thread but I'm no fan of the new Camaro. Yes, I'm a Pontiac TA guy but we have enough in common that I hope you can forgive me. The truth is, the new Camaro is too "GM" if you know what I mean. The whole company looks like the designers could only use a straight edge to design a car. Your first generation Camaro's have smooth, rounded, sexy lines. Witness the entire Cadillac line, the new Camaro and to a great extent, the Corvette. They just don't do it for me. Just one man's humble opinion.

Agreed. The previous gen Mustang (before the 2010 model) looks great. The Challenger looks good but needs to go on a serious diet. There's a head to head shot of the new challenger and a 1970 Challenger, and the 70 looks like a nimble little ballerina. The new camaro is a good looking car, but I totally agree that it doesn't have the soul of the older cars. It's almost like when classical music is played through a computer program that hits all the notes exactly in time. It's never as good as when a real person plays it even if they're not as perfect.

I think the Challenger and the Camaro are both nice cars, but neither one of them nailed it.
There's just something wrong with the Challenger. The lack of chrome, the stance, I don't know what it is, but they just don't look as good as I thought they would when I first saw pictures. I really think they could be helped enormously from a drop kit or something to really nail it.
The Camaro? Nice car, but retro? Not really. I think they blew the retro thing. Maybe it's a good thing, since the retro phase may be on the way out, but I much rather liked the original Horton concept rendering that was presented to GM by PHR and got the ball rolling.
I wish I was one of the guys you see on t.v. like Trepanier or Foose who had so much money I could just run out and buy one just to mod the body panels to look like the Horton Camaro.

I actually like the Challenger a whole lot more in person than in photos. It looks fantastic in any color other than orange. It is awwwwwfully big though. But then the original wasn't exactly the same size as an MG either.

I like all three of the new cars (Mustang, Camaro, Challenger). Would I buy one? Probably not.
I'm not even going to complain they're not 1969 enough. It's just the things I love about older cars are pretty much all the things you don't want in a normal car. That's what I like about them. The smell of gasoline, the rattles, dealing with crappy old paint, ect. But I can't really work on a new car in the same way as an older car. I don't get to worry about what color I would like to paint it next time, I don't get to do some crazy engine swap (they're already too good to do that).
I guess it's the reason many of you/us don't just buy a Vette when you have vette money in your pre-72 car. A Corvette is awesome... but it's just a car.

I think the biggest offense of the new Challengers are the big slab sides. While old cars could have the lower sheet metal gracefully tuck in (at the cost of much interior space) modern cars need the interior space to justify their large size. You can see Dodge cheated a bit by adding that black stripe at the bottom of the sides to try to recreate the old look without actually having any curve.

The issue with that website that i've seen is they all seem to be fairly thick headed "Mopar or No Car" types. VERY Anti anything but Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth products.
In fact, they're anti-anything thats not just like it was off the assembly line, or back in the 80's with Air shocks, and wide, poor offset wheels sticking out the back.
Anyway, this is my opinion... and I just hate their mentality sometimes. (Ok a lot of the time).

It's definitely interesting how they say the SRT-8 Challenger would smoke the Camaro SS.
Well, since stat's don't matter...
SRT-8 = 425hp/4150lbs
SS = 426hp/3747lbs
Hmm.. Definitely going to smoke it. :bsjerk:

Yeah, when I first saw a Challenger up close late last year the first thing out of my mouth was "It's bigger than my Chevelle, wtf"
I know they were never MG sized, but something about the new one seems large for ANY 2 door car. Perfect size for a modern 2 door car to me = 350z to M3 sized. And yes you could fit an LSx engine in a car that size... and people do it... and everyone is in awe.

Man are they a bunch of deluted haters with major inferiority complexes. I guess for them to think that the Challenger got a fair shake was if the V6 Mustang and V6 Camaro were compaired to the SRT8. Face facts the Challenger is a heavy PIG, the Camaro isn't much better at 3900 (what the hell was GM thinking?), at least Ford kept the weight down (well compaired to the other two). I would expect a bunch of Mopar (should I be like them and say Slowpar?) to only like the Challenger, same as GM people will love the Camaro, while the Ford crowds goes Mustang. I think all of the new breed of pony cars are good, just not great.......The Challenger is a sexy looking car but big and WAY TOO HEAVY, the Camaro is too heavy and the looks are OK but not great, the 2010 Mustang has a great looking front end but man did they ugly up the rear of a nice looking car, and the engine is too underpowered for the crowd.

This is not a Mopar thing, it's a "car guy" thing. 99% of "car guys" are prejudice against something. It's why I only pop into a small number of sites and then stick to one or two forums.
There's the Ford guys, then there's the Chevy guys, then there's guys who hate on imports, the stock nazis, etc. etc.
Prime example, when I log in here, I can guarantee that at least once a month, someone will post something to do with imports in this forum just so you guys can have a rice-bashing thread.
If car guys would put their insecurities away and start thinking outside the box instead of their own little worlds, the hobby would be a lot more friendly, the general knowledge of everyone would go up, and you'd see a lot more cool custom stuff.
What makes one guy better because he drops $40k into his engine, when another guy drops $40k into appearance mods. The answer? You both have too much damn money to burn.

Wow, I can just picture the mullets that the guys on that board most likely have. The comments remind me of an uneducated former co-worker of mine. He used to constantly make stupid comments about just about any car (that was not his), using 3rd grader insults like "slowmaro", etc.
I happen to be an all-around car enthusiast. I like American cars, I like German cars, and to a much lesser extent some Japanese cars. People who have such extreme brand biases crack me up. It is funny how blind it makes them. Looks are always subjective, but you cannot deny performance numbers.
