I've been offered a used 700r4 for something less than 300 (he asked 300, I rejected, he asked for a counteroffer).

I'm not really sure what I should be offering, and more importantly, I'm not sure what questions I need to be asking.

It'd be going in my 65 Chevelle, behind my 396 (about 350hp, give or take). Rear is a 3.0x and it's unlikely the car will ever be raced, if it matters.

I've asked what the tranny came out of but email discussions make for slow responses. What else do I need to ask?

What will I need to attach it to my car? From a search I gather that I'll need an adapter to hook the TV cable to the Holley, and that maybe my flexplate won't have the holes in the right place -- what else do I need to look at picking up? I'm trying to build this car as cheap as possible so having to buy a bunch of extra stuff may be a dealbreaker.

Is 200 a good price on a used 7004r, regardless of original vehicle, or should I be looking to offer less?

While it's possible that the trans will hold up, if it's stock I wouldn't bet on it.
Sure, if you drive like a grandmother it should last, but even if you're not racing it I think you'll push it harder than it's gonna like.

On the other hand, if it's been built up then there's a chance it'll hold up.

Derek,
I don't know what the going price is on a known working unit, $200-300 would probably be fair.

A core is $75-125 from core suppliers. In my world, it's a core until I go through it no matter what the supposed history.

In your car I would try to go with a 200-4R, plenty capable of the power with normal build and will fit with the existing driveshaft.

A 700 will also work fine but require you to shorten the driveline.

if its older than 87 pass, need late 87 up and preferably from truck. Then you need to have sungear shell replaced and go ahead and update to 4l65/4l70 internal specs.
