View Full Version : Chevrolet Engine and Manual transmission poll!!!

Hello Everyone,
I am doing a little project and I could really use everyone's help. This particular poll is for Chevrolet folks, and more polls will be done at a later time for other brands.
This is only for folks that are running manual transmissions. I am trying to gauge what engines are being used most with what transmissions. By "other," I am referring to TKOs, Richmond, DN, Muncie, and other more traditional transmissions, manual only.
Thanks!
Andrew

It seems that non-T56 transmissions are favored by small blocks and big blocks, and that T56s are favored by the LSx crowd.

IMHO, I think it could be attributed to the fact that while most on this forum want one, Gen I SBC has been made even less expensive by the LSX introduction. I'll also bet that some might still fearful of the work that goes into a swap.

I remain a big fan of build what you have, unless there are significant reasons not to- like a hole in the block. Almost any engine can get an additional 100 hp for the cost of acquiring and installing a different engine.
I have a sbc in the Camaro, with a mpfi system, because that car cries for a carbureted 4bl look.

sbc with tko 600 in the works for our 69 Nova project. How about making the ls1 top end fit onto the sbc, not a fluff job, but a real grouping of parts to do this. I think it would go over very well with all the small blocks out there.

I've been running a 383 cid Small Block with a close ratio Richmond Super T-10 in my '62 Corvette for over 20 years. I try to keep weight down on my cars whenever possible, so I prefer the lighter weight of the 4 speed (70 lbs) and have run different rear end ratios over the years to suit my taste. I originally had a 4.11 diff gear, but found that my engine had plenty of low end torque, so I later enjoyed 3.36 and 3.55 final drive ratios (all with positraction).

I'm running a BBC and BW T56 from a 96 Camaro. I'm running about 520 hp at the crank. I have had good luck so far.
My friend is running a Tremec TKO600 behind his BBC with a little less power. He's had a lot of trouble with his. He had a mechanical linkage then switched to a hydraulic throw-out bearing. He's still having trouble with it. Anyone else having trouble with their TKO's?

I've tried all of the combinations in your poll and my favorite is LS/TKO-600. The TKO reqiures a lot less fabrication on the tunnel/floor in most cars than the T-56 and is 50 lbs lighter and shifts better imo.

Me too, don't feel bad! I've never felt any other brand or type of transmission that shifts as good as mine. Spherical rod ends for the shifter linkage really tighten things up. ONe of my buddies swore up and down I had an automatic until I took him for a ride. It can be shifted pretty quick :D
