I am looking for thoughts on the best drop out motor for my 67 Camaro

Goals 500 RWHP with room to grow.
Complete drop out I want trans (manual) and accessories to come with it. E.g AC, Power Steering ect.
My Budget is 7k for the Motor trans purchase would. (stock HP) I could budget another 4k toward Supercharger or heads cam.

What I have been looking at are LS2 drop outs from 06 and higher GTO's. But I notice allot of folks using LS7's and LSX's and Lq9 motors.

Any ideas appreciated.

'04 GTO = LS1. '05-6 = LS2.

A complete GTO LS2 takout is a great option if you can get everything. The engine wiring harness will work well and save a lot in costs. Get everything you can. The little parts add up in a real hurry and the costs skyrocket.

Don't forget that you will need headers, engine plates, hoses, etc. that will add up quickly depending on the components used.

A supercharger for $4K will be a tough gig. A Magnuson will be more.

Check my website for an LS1 swap. There is also a thread in the Project Updates section. Search for Magnuson.

Yeah I see quite a few GTO ls2/t56 drop outs on ebay for around $6,500. I was considering getting one but then I realized that a t56 costs about $1500 used with bell housing and everything. So you'd be paying $5,000 for an ls2. But I wanted heads, cam, intake, maybe a stroker kit, etc. So that ontop of the $5000 adds up to about $10,000 pretty quick.

sdparts.com has ls2 blocks for $1100, stroker kits for $2,000, then get everything you need for l92 heads for about $2,000. That's $5k right there and you'd need everything a harness, computer, sensors, and covers, oil pan, accessories, etc. But you can get a lot of that used. So I basically decided that if I were going to modify a stock ls2 it would probably be cheaper to buy someone's crate engine or just build one and look for good deals on all the little stuff. But any way just some things to consider before you go dropping a bunch of money on a drop out. I've always liked to build rather than buy, but some of the crate engines out there are a good deal once you add up what it costs to buy a stock engine and modify it.

I just realized you didn't mention wanting a tranmission with a drop out engine, but one of Frank's engines would be a better deal than most drop outs unless you get lucky and a find a good deal.

For your budget and transmission needs, your best bet if a 05-06 GTO LS2/T56 drop out. You could go with an Fbody drop out but those were LS1 only. There aren't any other options for you that put a manual transmission on the back of a motor except the GTO. Also realize that the GTO T56 has better performance ratios than an Fbody. I believe they are similar to C5 Z06 if not the same.

Thanks W6. Do you know if the ac compressor location on the GTO motor will work in a stock sub? I assume i need to change the pan but the price of those should drop. I see GMPP has a nicce pan under 2 bills

The A/C compressor will not fit a stock subframe without notching. Check out Lance-W's post in the Project Updates section. He just completed his with this modification and it turned out very nice.

All Gen 3/4 motors put the AC compressor on the lower passenger side. The only differences between the engines are alternator and power steering pump locations. The front accessories are easy to swap around so I don't consider them to be that critical. This situation especially since you desire a T56 and have the funds for an LS2 and want a drop out.

You know I completely forgot about the CTSv earlier. I'm not sure what the differences is between it and the GTO accessories wise but they could be had with an LS2/T56 combo as well. Keep your eye out for them to help broaden your choices.

What if you run a vintage air system....Would you still have to notch the frame with the compressor they supply in the kit? If the anwer is "Yes" then would it be better to use a relocation bracket and move it up top?

I believe you would still have to notch the frame. I would prefer to leave the compressor down low, but there's nothing wrong with relocating it. In fact, there are aftermarket kits available which mount a Sanderson style compressor on the top, passenger side of the engine.

Travis - You do still need to notch the frame with a Vintage Air kit when mounting low on the passenger side.

I think I've only seen one installation that didn't notch like that,....but that would seem to mean the engine was mounted more forward.

It seems easier, to me, to use that relocation bracket for a high-passenger side mount. Buy that thing and it's Problem Solved!

Allan....Is this what you are going to do on yours?

dont forget the L92s..i think its like 430 out of the box.. you could get a nice one out of a Denali or escalade if you keep your eyes open.
