i'm going to be going w/ the fam to vegas in august. i'm not a big gambler; i'll probably take $50 and once i lose that no more gambling for me.

what are the big attractions as far as in car racing goes? automotive museums? anything similar to what GM had a few years ago ("the drive"). things i have to do while i'm there type stuff.

This is perfect timing. I was going to be asking the same question. I'll be heading out there on the 25th for a conference. Unfortunately I'll only have evening hours free.

On a serious note.. do they do tours over at the Shelby factory? that would be pretty cool to do.

I raced at the go cart track Pole Position, by the Palms. It was a blast. Those little electric cars get up to aroud 40mph, and you turn around 25 second laps (12 laps in a race), 24 second laps if you're fast! You really have to know where to brake and accelerate. They have different package deals depending on how long you want to race for. Be prepared to be addicted. I went to bed that night thinking of a turn that I never really perfected.

John, you are in for a great time. I just did the 3 day school last month with 6 other guys from my hometown and had a blast. Fantastic facility & instructors, lots of track time, excellent car control drills, even pretty much got the hang of heel and toe downshifting before we were done. The third day was pretty much go out and let it all hang out!! I am going to try go back for the advanced class this fall. I'm thinking the week after SEMA. Any questions let me know

Is any time a good time to be in Central Florida? :enguard:

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Ferrari at the Wynn, Lamborghini at the Venetian (had a Reventon at SEMA time) and the exotic dealership at Caesars. Caesars is the US distributor for the Koenigsegg - 800hp twin supercharged V8 - hells yea!

Is any time a good time to be in Central Florida? Yikes! This is coming from the folks who live in the perpetual rain forest in Washington?

<j/k> Actually from November to May is wonderful here. Highs in the 70s and 80s, lows in the 50s and 60s. An occasional cold snap (30s), but low humidity and very nice.

Now August, mind you, is hell on earth. If I could go from May to November, I would! I guess I need a summer home in the north. :)

Well... I consider myself a normal schmuck. More schmuck than normal, but still...

If you consider it a 3 or 4 day vacation, and your family can tolerate Dad (or Mom) being out racing all morning, returning back to the room in the mid-afternoon. (kinda like a family vacation where you play golf or something).

The cost for everything, which includes use of the car (C6 'Vette), room, breakfast, lunch, unlimited access to the clubhouse (including a pool, spa, exercise room, club room, etc.). That's 3 days and 3 nights. It all comes to $3300. Not too bad, but it's the transportation to and from, plus kid costs (if you were dumb enough to have them, lol), that will make this a weeklong $6K vacation for my family. I'll be 50 in November, which is why this particular vacation centers around me. They normally don't...

Is that within reach of a normal schmuck? I think so... ymmv. :)

Well, I admire your modesty, but from your talents and abilities you have shown, you are WAY above a "normal" shmuck! LOL.
Thanks for the info!

Joe's (in Caesars) is very good, the original is in Chicago. I just got back from Vegas, and we went to Joes the other night. I had a NY Strip (on the bone) that was to die for. I've been to the Palm in NYC and IMO it equaled or surpassed it. I suppose you can't lose either way. :)

As John put it, I consider myself more shmuck than normal also and Yes a "normal" shmuck can do it. The instructors do a great job of explaining in the classroom setting and during ride alongs and have quite a few drills that help you "get it".

We got a group of 10 guys to sign up together and got about a $500 discount on the price. John is right about the rest, the place is a country club with a racetrack instead of a golf course. Very, very nice. Your family is free to use any of the facilities while you are taking the course.

Shelby cafe by the LV Motorspeedway is an OK place to get burgers, etc and it is right down the road from the Shelby factory.

They had about 8 Super Snakes sitting outside the other day. The tour opened back up in Jan, it's an OK tour.

Check out the NASCAR track, Shelby museum....ask at the gift shop at track to show you where it is, take a ride in a NASCAR vehicle ( Petty driving experience) or if you plan a head could drive one of those cars on the track.
