Well,
My wife got accepted at Syracuse University Wednesday morning for her PHD program (English major). So we're moving from central California to New York in August. I am going to sell the business and pack up and go. Here's the kicker. I have the Camaro up on a car dolly (the front clip is off as well as every other bolt) and I'm smack dab in the middle of doing a budget build. The car has a fresh coat of epoxy primer applied to bare metal and I'm just getting started doing the body work. I feel like this is the best momentum I've made on this car and I feel like I'm doing a descent job for my budget. I will not be able to finish the car in time for the move, or even have it running. I should have the subframe ready in about a month being fully rebuilt and painted, but i feel like it won't be ready for the road in time. So I will find a place to park it and keep it covered for 5 years while we're in Syracuse.

Question. Is anyone from the Syracuse area? We will need to find an apartment or rental house and want to know what areas to look for, or look out for. The safety of my wife is the most important thing to me and I want her to feel comfortable where we will be living. At the same time we will be on a budget and won't be able to afford to live on the bluffs. Is there anywhere around campus that's descent? I will also be looking for a job, but I will not be picky. I'll take what I can get right now.

And yes, I do know that it's freaking cold in Syracuse.

Thanks everyone,
Gabriel

I have never lived in CA or NY but that sounds like some MAJOR culture shock to me. A friend moved to Staten island and "Dont like a thing about it"..............

I live a couple of hours away. I couldn't tell you what areas are good/bad but pm me if you aren't getting anywhere and I can try and network with some folks and get that info for you.

Humidity in the Summer is way worse than the cold in the winter lol. I'll email a buddy that lives there and see what areas he recommends.

This past winter was mild and so was last summer. Being 2 hours away we have very similar weather and I think we'd take the humidity over the cold any day. I think the Southeast is way more humid than it ever is here.

Time will tell:)

I just remembered my son's friend is an SU grad in 2007. I left a message with his Dad for him to call me.

For what its worh syracuse NY is "upstate" and pretty much a college town. Not at all what you think when you think NY... Its a big state.... Enjoy it nice farm country up there...

Wow, thanks for the replies guys. It's comments like this that show how close knit the car community is. I appreciate all the suggestions, as we're going into this move blind. Me and my wife thank you all for your support. It means alot to us.

uh yeah the SE has terrible humidity down near the coast and in the flat lands.

That's a long move Gabriel. Best of luck to you and your wife. Oh and congrats to her on being accepted.

I was born and raised in upstate NY. I've also been to almost every state in the country and theres no place I'd rather be!!!! NYC is a totally different ballgame... Syracuse is a great city. When you make the move, welcome to NY!!!!!!

Being from Staten Island I have to say that I'm very offended by this comment. The lack of profanity is just atrocious...

Man I empathize... we moved to Seattle from Tampa 10 years ago to go to grad school. At the time I had to leave my Mach at my parents while I shared my wife's '92 Corolla soul sucker for the next few years.

10 years later we're moving back to Sarasota from Seattle... in 6 weeks. I've got a ton of projects to do on my XR4TI before I go (including a custom diff and tranny swap) and I have no time to do any of them.

So, all I can say is: Good luck! It'll surely all work out eventually, but in the meantime it'll be a challenge.

BTW, if you're looking for budget moving stuff, including a way to get your car there at a reasonable price, drop me a PM... I've done a ton of research and found a place that allows for "self moves" where you pack the truck with your stuff, and then can load your car into the trailer as well.
