Damn those things give me the creeps!
My biggest fear is meeting one my size.
Maybe that's why I think they are the most awesome bug out there.

It's like a bug version of Ugly Betty on steroids...but it's still able to crack a smile ...lol

Hence, my biggest fear  .
I used to catch them and feed them crickets and grasshoppers. My boys were both grossed out and fascinated.

Those things kill birds.
You're right.
I had no idea they could do that.
Below is from wikipedia so it must be true (lol)
"Although their diet primarily consists of small invertebrates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invertebrate), large mantises have been observed eating small vertebrates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertebrate) such as lizards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lizards), mice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouse), snakes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snakes), and small birds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birds) such as hummingbird (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummingbirds)s."

Indeed. It depends on the species, though. Mantises range from very small to fairly large. Definitely not something to f--- with!

how do they kill birds? are they poisonous? do they attack in numbers? I've held them and played with them and they seem rather harmless although they documents state their prey is much larger. interesting.

just found this..
Sexual behavior is spectacular and often fatal for the male; "a hungry female may decapitate and partially consume a male during copulation without interrupting the transfer of sperm."
that sucks

There are species that get large. Very large.

lol good one!
To answer the kill question, see those arms with the sharp ends? They jab that into the bird. There's a picture somewhere of a humming bird hanging by the arm and it's sliced open by the mantis.
That lizard picture is cool. Remind me of when my roommate had the chameleon and they would feed it house flies.
