Hey all. I was wondering if anyone has been doing custom taillights on their cars. My '73 nova hatchbacks taillight pan is in bad shape and I have been planning on cutting out the taillight holes, welding in some new steel and remounting some custom lights. Only thing is I am having a hard time deciding what lights to put in there. This car is going to be half rat rod half pro-tourer. Flat black, minimal interior, no headliner, rhino lined floors, built 350, muncie 4 speed, '70 nova front clip, shaved trim and emblems, already has a nice suspension set up with aftermarket springs and shocks, poly suspension bushings, hotckis goodies throughout, trimmed and tucked bumpers, 17" centerline wheels and tailights from a....

I saw a 73 with the inner tailight removed so there is only the outter ones left. Instead of 4 ,there are 2. It look much better that way. I would also think a set of round tailights from an early 70's camaro would look good.
I was going to suggest triming the rear bumper, but I see you already said you were going to do that. Man are those things huge on those cars..
But another thought. I wonder how hard it would be to make a bumper from a 71-72 chevelle fit? that would be sweet. you could get rid of that big rear bumper and have the taillights all in one shot. I dont have any idea how much work it would be, but I think it would look awesome. Just an opinion though.

Yea, this was my first car that I got 14 years ago. I lowered it and spent alot of money on handling and brakes. Its been in primer the whole time I've had it, and no carpets or interior either. The back bumper was toast so I took it off long ago. Unfortunately I dont have it any more. I think I am going to make a roll pan for it instead of trimming a stock bumper. It does look alot better when the bumber is trimmed but it still is too big.
Good idea on the taillight cutting. I will have to take a look at that more closely.

Any one seen or have pics of other taillights in these cars?
If your going with a round style, maybe consider some CCFL Halo rings. Like the ones Commonly seen on aftermarket projector headlights and some BMW's. They come in all colors and sizes and are extremely cheap on E-bay. Not too common, but look like a pretty neat alternative to LED's. Just a thought.....
