Well damn. Took the Nova out for a cruise and was idling down the street from my home when I heard a loud bang from under the hood. Everything shut down and I rolled to a stop. I saw the huge steam cloud and the trail of coolant behind the car indicating that I had issues. Today I pulled the motor out to find that the head of intake valve on the number four cylinder broke and did some dancing around in the cylinder. It damaged the chamber on my Brodix head, put a hole in the block the size of my palm, and hammered the piston. All of this at 1800 Rpm. So needless to say the season is starting off in rare form at my house.
Closer inspection revealed a crack in the valve stem right above the seat. It was half way through the stem and full of carbon. The other half of the stem was ripped and the metal was bright. It was only a mater of time before it gave up. These heads were on a friend's car for two seasons. Both of us run large solid rollers and monster springs so the stresses on the valvetrain tends to be pretty high. I guess that's hot rodding.
I have decided to go LSX now- I'll post up what left in the classified section.
