Well I was out with my room mate today and spotted a sign for a Helicopter Museum. Well being the aviation buff I am I couldn't pass up the opprotunity. So here's the pics.

Now the next two vehicles are a bit weird

This helicopter has NO drivetrain what so ever. It has a small turbine that ducts it's thrust through a tube to the rotor and out the tips for tip jets. I didn't notice this at first. Just thought it was a small turbine powered helicopter till one of the volenteers asked me what's missing and pointed me to the fact there is not tail rotor. then the fact there is NO transmission or rotor shaft. Prettty cool huh? The guy showed a the handle that handgs off the side in the pic. But said no one there can really figure out what it does.

This appears to be an early attempt at a small hovercraft. It even has a bicycle seat and handle bars.

Cool pics. Thanks for posting. I was once a test pilot for a human powered helicopter built by Mike Brace. http://www.humanpoweredhelicopters.org/monarch/index.htm Sikorski actually had me listed as an experimental pilot so we could test in one of their buildings. It was too warm inside and the floor was smooth so we didn't get as much lift as outside in the very cold.
I crashed it, never got out of ground effect. Barely lifted off the surface but he believed I was the first to actually lift off the ground in a human powered machine. Eventually the details/videos will be released when someone wins race to be the first with an operational machine that can stay off the ground for a minute. I'm sworn to secrecy till then as far as fabrication details, designs and such but it was really cool.

Polar Star or Polar Sea.

Due to the solid orange paint scheme it's last active unit would have been the Polar Detachment based in Mobile, AL. They would fly to Seattle to embark on one of the Ice Breakers for a trip to the Arctic or Antarctic.

The V-22 sound is truely unique, it's also very loud when in hover mode. I live out in the desert where they were testing it and everything else. It's an air show every day.
