Anyone had any luck running a 275/40/17 on the front of an 86 Cutlass?

I plan on buying some used 17x8.5 Rondell 58 wheels with a 5.25" bs. I know I'll have to get some adapter/spacers because of the backspacing which will help me set the wheel just about anywhere I need it to within reason.

I don't plan on lowering it much if any. Is this just too big to keep from rubbing? If I can't keep them from rubbing I will probably go down to a 245/45/17 on the front with the same rim.

I plan on the 275/40's on the rear, I'd just like for the bulge of the tire to be the same on front and rear if possible. I know the 275's will have more bulge than the 245's will. Think it will be really noticable running both 245/45's & 275/40's on an 8.5" rim?

What are your thoughts on this? Is that just too big a tire for the front both fitment wise and looks wise?

Good news.... the minimum recommended rim width for a 274/40 is 9". So when you put the correct rim on, the bulge should not be as noticeable.

Or you can go to a 255/45 all around.

I would go with the 245/45 up front to be safe.

X2.

I think Mike Sarafin, Frank's son of Prodigy customs has them on the front of his 86 Monte. But, he has fender flares on the front & back to allow them to fit. Correction he has 295s on the front.

I think I will go with the 245/45's on the front and just run the 275/40's on the rear. If Iwas gonna go with a frame notch and315's on the rear then I might go 275's on the front then but tat would require wider rims, etc. Yup it's gonna be 245/45' front and 275/40's in back.

Thanks guys for keep me on the sensible path.

I've always envisioned flares exactly like that. Can you get them anywhere?

I PM'ed Frank about them before and he said they were patterned after the GNX flares. Unfortunately, since the GNX wheel well opening is shaped differently than the GNX, they were custom made.

Bummer....I was envisioning them on my Cutlass, too! sigh...........

They do make the FE3X flares for the Cutlass. Not as big as the GNX flares though.

I run a 255 up front. Took me a long time to figure out the correct BS so I could turn lock to lock. I dont run inner fenders though.

A 255/40-17 would be an option too, and would fit an 8.5 wheel nicely.

I think I will go with the 245/45's on the front and just run the 275/40's on the rear.

Just a lil info, a 235/45/17 and a 285/40/17 look good together. Similar sidewall profile (lil more, not much that you can notice for the back). I have these mounted on 8 and 10 inch rims. JR
