View Full Version : $1700 70 Chevelle Coupe & Another Cali Guy

i just bought my first muscle car last week.
its a 1970 chevelle coupe,Ive wanted a muscle car ever since i was about 11( i just turned 26)
It started when my dad bought a 69 fire bird, but he shortly sold it. My true love of muscle cars really began the instant my dad bought his 68 chevelle (i was about 16). My dad had taken me muscle car shopping over a span of a few days i remember we saw a couple camaros, a 70 and a 72 i believe but when we came across the 68 chevelle it was over.I remember the day like it was yesterday, my dad ask for my opinion and i told him "pop lets take the 68' home " so we did.
Ever since then Ive been painting the picture of my dream muscle car in my head, after years of debating what chevelle i liked more between the late model 68 - 70 chevelle i decided that i like the 70 model more, and since first gen camaros where wayyyyy out of my budget i decided that the 70 chevelle would the first muscle car id hunt down. So my dream muscle car had been narroed down to a 70 Chevelle, the first step was to find and buy a 1970 chevelle.
I'm proud to say that i have completled the first step in my dream.
l am ecstatic the car looks better then i originally thought it would. It doesn't run but hey i only spent $1700 dollars, ( funny thing is that it came down to me and this other guy who arrived at the owner house with money in hand at the same exact time so the owner decided to sell the car to the winner of a coin toss, i called tails and luckily my girlfriend was there intervene: she vetoed my tails and told the owner that she wanted heads so we switched the call, and sure enough it was heads so i won the coin toss i got to take my baby home)
The car looks pretty solid, and i don't see very much rust at all. Around Christmas I wanted to buy a car but could not find one in my price range so in hopes to cheer up my mood i found a really good deal on on a 454 BBC so i bought it ( $150 complete engine) . Keep in Mind folks this is 5 months before i even had a car for it or even had any type of idea of when i would have a car for it, this goes to show how insane i am over this hobby.
Anyway let me quit ranting nonsense all that to say this, i live in the SoCal Los Angeles/ Orange County area and i was wondering if any of you guys are working on a car or project and need ANY type of help or just a extra hand for absolutley anything I am eager to lend a hand in exchange for your patience, and head picking with all my questions i would also like to ask if any you know of any good car clubs that i could join to help me with tips and the restoration of my dream car? i am a complete newbie i mean no experience at all with working on cars, really i know nothing at all but what i do know is that i love muscle cars I and really am willing to work hard and will do anything possible to gain the knowledege necessary to learn everything possible so i will be capable of working on this car by myself some day.

thanks a lot for reading this I'm really hoping to hear from you guys, i truly value your advice and tips.

What a great find! it looks like they were fixing the front hit and never really wrapped it up... your gain!
If you were a hard head, I bet you could get it to run... it looks like it's all there.

I hope you went to jail after buying that cause you basically stole it!
Holy Crap that thing would be 5 times that here in Illinois.

Glad to see there are still people out there selling cars at reasonable prices!

Nice score and have fun with it!!!!

Mannnn Who you Tellin' ???????????????????????????????????????

i had seriously been searching for a 70' chevelle in my price range for about 2 years now.

I would occasionally just jump on craiglist looking for a deal. I never expected to find one this cheap, i was willing to pay alot more for it.
i really dont like cliche's as much as the next guy but i guess it really does pay to be patient sometimes.

Yeah no kidding, I can't find 70 Chevelles for less than $4k. Does that 454 you have run? If so that was a hell of a score too.

Congrats on your find. I had a 70 back in high school, great times. I am doing a frame off, pro-touring 65 Chevelle as we speak. Just finished the driver side quarter and this weekend will be the passenger side. Have welded mostly an entire new floor, tubs, trunk, inner rockers etc. Lots of work and a lot more to come. Welcome to the addiction!

thanks im really exited i have so many ideas flowing trough me right now, is it true that you always regret getting rid of your first muscle car?
n how did you go from 70 to a 65 did you end up liking the 1st generation more??

i noticed that youre from so cal, what parts?

I am here in Orange County. As for the 65, I totally dig the body style. It was one of the old deals on what was available when I had the cash in hand. But I like the style, similar to the older Nova's

so this is what happened; i had one of my friends come over to check out this car when i first bought it. Just a look around to tell me what was wrong with it and how i can get it up and running.
My daily driver is a 98 528i Bmw; Alfred who 1. is a bmw tech and 2. i met trough another forum "teamchevelles.com" had mention that alot of bmw wheels have the same offfset as Chevelle.
SOOOOOOOOO
a couple of weeks ago, a drunk driver unfortunately clipped the front of my car, busted my front left wheel( bent it really bad) and broke my lower control arm.
So what better time then now to check if these wheels really fit since im not driving the car.

soooo, i wanted to see what you guys think, i was thinking about just throwing those wheels on the chevelle for the summer and drive it around for the meanwhile, giving me some time save up and buy the wheels i truly want. Here are some pics of the wheels after i clean up & polish them up ( it doesnt take much to get them looking good again)

i love the way this chevelle look's, ive been searching high and low for those wheels and haven't able to find them.

theese wheels are the closest i have been able to find.
i love the classic billet look, but they arent many companys that make them in 22's.
i was thinking of this combo 22x12 on back 20x10 in front

So after much deliberation with a certain someone on this particulor board "cough" Fabian "ahem" cleared my throat, thank you very much. I have dicided to go with the reliability of a fuel injected motor. After a little bit of searching ( with the help of once again fabian) I have came across lq9 that came out of a 06 ss silverado truck with I believe 44k miles on it. Instead of the traditional BBC (which I planed on stroking out to a 496 ehh maybe that'll be my next project.)
I found this motor & tranny combo for relatively cheap $1600.

I was promised by a certain person (who was previously mentioned a couple times earlier) that could achieve both major goals for my motor with this fuel injected block.

1. Rediculous beastly aggresive idle
2. Hit the 500 hp mark.

After checking out the comp cams (BIG Mother Thumpr) I'm hoping I could achive that real choppy sound I'm looking for.

But the dilema is that I still don't know how I'm going to hit that magical 500 hp number!!

how easily can i achieve this, any specific heads, cam combos? how much should i expect to pay to hit the 500 mark? how easy or difficult will it be to achieve this?
Any insight and info would be greatly appreciated !

i just picked up the engine n tranny last night, but as many others b4 me it seems to be a lq4. i pulled the spark plug to check if the piston top was dished or flat but as i ran a screw driver over the top it kinda felt dished but on another board somebody had posted some pics of their flat lq9 pistons vs the dished lq4's and the ones look alot more like their flat lq9 pistons it "supposely" came out out of a 06 silverado ss truck, so it looks like im going to have to do a little bit more research to find out exaclty if i have a lq9 or lq4. I picked both tranny and engine up for $1500 if its not a lq9 i can always turn around and sell it. Iwill post pics later tonight.

i originally planned on going with a bb 454 that i intended on stroking to a 496, the reason for this was 1. i wanted a loud abnoxious chopping idle and 2 because i wanted the hit the magical 500hp mark.

As i did some research and asked a few questions i was assured by a few ppl that i could achieve my goals with a fuel injected motor, so since i found this deal i pulled the trigger. But now I am left with a few questions and hope that you guys can help me out figuring out the solution to my problem.

does any body know what it will take take to to get the
comp cam "Big Mutha Thumpr' cam in there???? I know its a huge cam and there are better and easier ways to achieve my hp goal, but like most people in this world, id like to have my cake and eat it too. I definetly WANT to have a louuddddddddddd RUFFFFFFFF iddle but at the same time i would love to get on the gas peddle and know that i can hit 500 hp when i feel like it.
here are the cam specs

BIG MUTHA’ THUMPR™ - Street/strip, needs 9.5:1 CR, 2800+ stall, intake, gears, & headers, very rough idle.
2600 to 6800

54-602-11
291THR9
291 311
235 249
.573 .558
109°

Is it feasable to reach 500 hp with this particular cam N/A?

would it be easier to just port out the stock 317 heads or to swap to the l92's to gain the extra horse power?

is it even possible to run this cam with the l92's???? any feed back would be greatly appreciated

(like i said i know they are other ways of doing it but i want the guaranteed sound and i would love to achieve the 500 hp call me hard headed)
