I'm ready for tires on my 78 TA, and am using the new Year One 17x9 snowflakes. I am going to run 285/40's on the rear, and was considering the 255/45's on front. This would get me at 26" tall on both, but I am concerned a 255/45 may look stretched on a 9" rim. Anyone have any insight on this? Thanks for any help.

I have a 245/45-18 on a 9" rim and it's perfect fit, it's my spare.
Up front I have a 245/40-18 on the same 9" wheel, again doesn't look stretched. It's the perfect tire size for that wheel width.
Pic of the 245/40-18 mounted:

I'm running 275/40-18s in the rear on the same 9" wheel, they are the same height as my 245/45-18 spare to keep my posi unit 'happy' if I need to use there.
Hope this gives you a little insight.

I don't have pics, but I can say this. The "measured rim width" is what the manufacturer uses as a baseline for all the dimensions such as overall section width, tread width, etc. You can consider this the ideal width for that tire. They also have a range of width to use which is for safety and performance, but gives you a guideline aesthetically. For the 255/45, the measured rim (from most manufacturers) is 8.5" and the range is 8" to 9.5". Therefore it shouldn't look stretched.
BTW, you might want to consider an 18" of the same size for the 2nd gen. The 27" tall tires front and rear will really compliment the fenderwells on that car better. It's also closer to the factory height tire (which is probably why is compliments the lines better).

I have an 18x9 with a 255/35R18 R888 on the front of my GTO. The sidewall is just a little past the edge of the rim.

the rears on my car are 255/50/17 on a 9" wide rim and they are good. 27" tire. (pic in the PT garage, I can get detail pics if you'd like too.) -Dan

Thanks for the help guys. Looks like I'll go 255/45 in front and 285/40 in rear. I would have liked to stay at 27", but since my car is lowered I think the 26" will do fine. Guess I gotta order some tires:)

What brand are you going with? Reason I ask is the 285/40/17s are getting harder to find. BFG no longer makes them in the g-force KDW anymore (which is the tire I like).

It's been spoken of highly in this thread:https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54705

There are a few still. I have GY F1 in 285/40/17. Good fit on a 10" wheel. JR
