is it possible to powder coat aluminum wheels without any problems with flaking or wear from mounting tires?

Most powder I have seen would not hold up very long when mounting.

Co-worker did his passat's wheels in black. He's using them for his winter rubber. With all the gravel, salt, and afore mentioned mounting they are still looking great. No chips or flakes. Guess it comes down to how good your powdercoater is and how good your tire shop is.

Don't guys like Rushforth powder coat wheels? If so, I would not see any problems.

powder is perfectly fine for wheels. my 17" wheels were stripped and PC'ed 3 years ago, still look great today. go to http://forum.eastwoodco.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=9 and you can find hundreds of pictures of wheels (cast aluminum, forged, billet, magnesium - ALL of em) that have been powder coated.

I think you will find that unless the chrome is stripped the powder will not last.....

hmmm, I need to run 18's in the front now and want to run the c5 z06's still so I was going to get 18x9.5 knock offs for the front, and powder coat to match. Maybe I'll get them stripped too.

you should join the eastwood forum that i linked to above. a few of the guys on there have coated over chrome and had excellent results. it all depends on who chromed said component. they've all basically figured out that you can't coat over harley davidson chrome. at the very least go to www.thepowdercoater.com (http://www.thepowdercoater.com) and email the owner, mike. he can direct you on what you should do w/ your specific wheels.
