There have been several PT cars that ran better autocross times and dragstrip times ( than a modern sportscar ) at the Run Thru the Hills events .
Check the RTTH's coverage / times.
You'll see that several PT cars ran faster than a Black C6 corvette and a Blue C6 Corvette.
Here's a link to the results page:

The short answer is yes. As shown above. A good setup with a good driver works well regardless of the car's age. A new sports car doesnt make the guy behind the wheel a better driver. As is illustrated by the dozens of smashed up exotic car stories all over the internet. There is no replacement for driving skill. And sadly it's an often overlooked "modification".

Living in So-Cal you get to see more than your fair share of Porsche's, Ferrari's, Bentley, M5's etc. I have a pretty good story about a dude in a M5. I was driving near LAX and lined up with a dude in 2008-9 M5, he was with this girl and he was trying to impress her. Anyway to make a long story short I was side by side with him all the up to 145 when his rev-limiter kicked in, I waved good by and he flipped me off... I could get a felony for that one, but the look on his face was priceless...

I always thought it would be cool to have a bunch of stickers made up with various car brands with X's through them like the World War Two fighter Aces had......then when you stop at the next light roll your window down and stick on a BMW sticker with an X through it on your door......priceless

Their expression was priceless.... you'd think they saw a UFO.
As mentioned before, driving skill is the most important part, often overlooked. Some think that the price tag they paid gives them skills they do not have.

Bid Red , the '69 Camaro , beat a bunch of exotics at the Silver State Challenge back in the late 80's. Of course , Big Red is more of a street-able tube chassis race car , but he still beat them.

Of course had he had the limiter (155) removed, he would've waved goodbye on the way to 193 mph
