Is there a site or can someone tell me how to decode a 4l80e's tag? I know what I have is an earlier model because it has the rib up the top of the bell housing and does not have the 12 o'clock hole.

A second question, are there any weak spots to fix before install. This is going behind a Pontiac 462ci motor making a bit over 400 hp and 500 ft. lb. of torque.

OK, third question, best converter for the money out there for said transmission?

I'm pretty sure the first number on the tag indicates when it was manufactured. Cooler fittings together up front indicates early style. The newer style(97+?) has cooler fittings separated.

Thanks. I forgot to bring the numbers with me to work so I'll have to look when I get back home. I'm wanting to say it was a 3. I do know it's an early transmission based on the cooler fittings and other items I mentioned.

I'm beginning to think this is a Goodwrench service replacement transmission. The numbers on the tag are:

13TRP
97-346 193123

I see a cast number of:

24204250 and 7

Anyone out there have an idea what I'm up against here?

I'll post up numbers off a 4l80 trans here for comparison.

Sorry I ran out of time yesterday. And I'm still trying to get caught up on orders today. I'll try again later or Monday. I won't forget.

No rush from me. I'm grateful for the help.

I can tell it's a 97 transmission. And 24204250 is the part number for the early style GM case (Google).

FWIW, I'm pretty sure that Goodwrench puts their own tag on them when they rebuild/remanufacture them.

Thanks. I should have googled that part number.

So, good, bad, OK? I'm not a monster motor. It's a Pontiac 462ci with about 425hp and 500 ft. lbs.

And after getting some time to research it via the internet today I am convinced it is the earlier case design because of the location of the cooling line ports. Thanks for steering me in the right direction MJ.
