Well, at first it started with a question, "If given the choice, would you get a new Camaro, Grand National or Typhoon (https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52785)"

Then it started to become a reality (https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53201)

Well, Typhoon 0722 has a new home.
I worked with the seller to a price we could both agree on that was well below the original asking price. She has some problems, but that will be fixed up in a couple of weeks when I'm ready to hand over the keys to a trusted friend who is well versed in GN's and turbo vehicles.

She named herself on the way home…

Introducing Thunder.
When I was getting on the highway to come back home with her, 97.1 was fading in and out (I was about 70 miles north of Dallas) and when it came in clear all I heard was...

(fuzz, static). . ."You've been . . . .THUNDRSTRUCK" (fuzz, static)

I laughed and said out-loud, "Well, if that's what you want to be called, prove it to me." I'll be damned if I didn't change the channel only to hear White Zombie's Thunderkiss 1965.

So, here is Thunder:

Those are cool. A real performance vehicle wearing urban camouflage.

Refresh my memory, are those things all wheel drive? I am thinking the Cyclones (truck version) were, but can't remember on these. If they are AWD, are the front spindles/knuckles (whatever) the same as what is on the 4 wheel driver Blazers?

Wow, that looks really clean.

Any mods to it?

Any yes, they are AWD

The spindles are the same. So is the rest of the drivetrain, exept transfer case and non switchable front diff.

Sweet! I've always wanted one of those but could never take the final step. Tons of potential and true wolf in sheep's clothing. Have fun

actually, i think they had different spindles than the regular 4X4 S trucks that worked with the different torsion bars to lower the vehicle a couple of inches.

nice Typhoon but what is under the hood
hopefully a single turbocharged 4.3 V6 with a liquid to air intercooler that puts out 275 or so HP.

Just an FYI, 17x9.5 front and 17x11 Rear ZR1 wheels (the 91-95 model years with ~36mm offset) are a bolt on for the Typhoon.

It is a crime that GM only made a few of them

nice ride , had a new one when they came out leased for 3 yrs , only car i ever made money on after a buyout. keep an eye on the heater core, they leak sometimes. why didnt you go with a trailblazer ss ? 400 hp can get used ones pretty cheap. good luck

I always liked the typhoons/cyclones, never saw a white one, though.
GMC should have made a safari van-based one (had the same drivetrain setup) they could have called it the bufoon.

It's Syclone guys. I love these things. Be nice to it or you'll start breaking the AWD system

Good Luck with it. I bought one new, was a bear when it was running right! Motor and turbo were replaced under warranty for a rod knock @ 8k miles. A 2nd turbo went on @ 13k miles. Plus had a heck of a time with the wheels. I developed a vibration and had to havev all 4-rims replaced to solve the problem. Took close to 6-months to get the rims as it was near the end of production and those were real hard to come by.

Nice!! I was one of the first guys in 1992 to get a TYPHOON! in the massachusetts area. I LOVED THAT TRUCK! Cant tell you how many mustings I use to dust at New England Dragway quarter mile track with that truck. Just spool the turbo up and let the all wheel drive take over. Made quite a bit more money at the 1/8 mile track. 60 ft times were consistent as hell with no wheel spin and plenty of torque. Problem was, people caught on real quick as to what it was after a few weeks. Befor that I would tell them that it was a tricked out JIMMY. They would laugh until they saw nothing but the taillights at the end of the track. LOL.I too look around once in a while for a nice clean one. Just have not pulled the trigger... GOODLUCK with it They are kick ass rides with plenty of room to boot!! AHH THE MEMORIES!!

It is indeed it is a matching # stocker. Plenty of power for sure, but you know how it goes with great power....comes the responsibility to create MORE power!!

I am having the drivetrain overhauled front to back (keeping the engine as it is a matching #, and tranny...but going to rebuild it to withstand the TURBO (http://www.sytyperformance.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=210&category_id=176&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=26) I'm putting in.
Brakes aren't all that great, so I'm looking for a good option to add disc's all the way around.
The wheels are a little wobbly (common) so I'm going to get something decent--like the old corvette stockers or something to handle the disc's I'll be putting in.
Maybe bring her a couple of inches closer to the pavement.
--that's pretty much it. GM did a pretty good job on these things the first time around, so I don't think I need to mess with it too much. I just want a reliable daily driver that will take me to the track and then run low 12's with ease!

Don't worry--to all the purists, I'm keeping all the factory stuff in a safe place so I can restore her to factory specs.

Nice!!

I've always wanted to make mine into a Sy-"Clone"...AWD + LT1 + T56

I even went as far as buying the AWD t-case. But gave up on the project. Decided the additional weight wasn't worth the handling tradeoff.

Looking forward to seeing what you've got in store for it!!!
