I'm not sure if this should go in here or in the transmission forum, if it's wrong feel free to move it mods. Thanks.

Now on to the question. I am putting a LT1 and 4l60e into my 65 Skylark and was wondering how to get the stock speedometer to work. I love the old school sweeping speedo and want to keep it. Originaly there was the speed sensor screwed into the side of the trans I believe. So that would make it a mechanical speedo right?

I am using the harness out of a 94 TransAm from witch i got the motor and trans from and am not sure how to go about making this work. Are there any adapters or something I can buy? Thanks in advance.

You can use the cable X http://www.abbott-tach.com/cablex.htm .

You can get a new tailhousing that includes a mechanical speedo drive in addition to the VSS sensor. Jagsthatrun.com sells them.

I used a Cable-X. It has a few quirks but it seems to work OK.

Dhutton, do you know where I would find a tailshaft for a 4l60e that does that. Those Cablex things are out of my budget.

For the money & accuracy, I'd go with the JTR housing:

Shiftworks also sells them:

FYI I went with the jtr kit but i was never able to get a signal to the pcm that it liked. Which made the transmission not want to shift up or down. This was on my S10 LT1 conversion trying to get the mechanical speedometer to work. Could just be me but I still don't have a working speedometer.

So I think the other option is the way to go.

Cool thanks everyone for the replies. All those options are quite expensive so I might have to not have a speedometer for a while. But now I know where to look when it comes time. Thanks a lot.

I bit the bullet ($495) and went for the Shiftworks tail housing on my 4L70E so I could still use the stock cable-driven speedo on my '64 Tempest and retain the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) so I could run cruise control too.
