View Full Version : NON-Cop Attracting color?

Okay, I am getting ready to paint my 1993 Z28. It is currently flat black, and seems to draw the cops attention.
I am looking for a color that will not be as attention grabing.
Suggestions?

I say a silver or gray color. I've been there with the cop-magnet paint scheme before (porsche red on my '68). My '67 is silver with charcoal stripes and cops don't seem to notice me.

Maybe it's not the car but the mullet that's catching their attention? :enguard: Isn't that profiling? Or maybe it's that burning rubber smell that seems to follow you everywhere you go? Or the rubber stripes on the rear quarter panels? The old saying, "Where there's smoke, there's fire" isn't always true...but there could definitely be a ticket in the making.
Seriously though, if you do an internet search you'll see that there have been several studies and most don't seem to indicate that brighter, "arrest-me" colors get more tickets than any other. The one I saw most recently said red, gray, and brown received the most tickets in a 22 month suburban study by The Journal of Applied Social Psychology.

I agree with Tobin. Other factors come into play too. Do you have a loud exhaust or stereo system? How are your driving habits? Are your windows tinted limo dark?
I say get the car painted the color you like best. If you get it painted a "non-attention getting color" and the color is not your first choice ... you will get tired of the car and maybe not enjoy it as much?
Keep us posted on what color you go with.

Funny!! I love the brown and rust. LOL Ok, Im retired, just recently, a LA county deputy for 20 years.
Hmmmm, what attracted my attention, color?? No, not for me. It was usually the gang bangers driving the car LOL Ok, profiling?? YEAH!!! You go to enough shootings where you kinda realize what a gangster looks like. Well, they are usually the ones with the guns in one hand, kinda pointed in any direction, haphazardly to say the least. And that same glazed over look in their eyes, like too many quarts of cheap beer topped off with a nice buzz of heroin or in the maniacs case the speedy eyes cause the meth is just about right.
Now, if you didnt have any of those signs I wasnt looking at you, oh, unless you brain farted and pasted me up on the freeway while I was at 75. LOL
Car color, nope, I never noticed. OK.... A green 1985 chevy would always perk my interest :) JR
How about dark green or white?

Paint it like a police car ;) and add the spotlight over the drivers side mirror...maybe a few extra antennaes.

Well seeing how I'm a "Cop" I can tell you there is not a "Cop attracting" color. Paint it how ever you like, just abide by the law and you have nothing to worry about.

I have a few PD buddies and they all say that driving habits are noticed most. If you're checkerboarding you will get their attention real quick. Or the fastest in a group coming into view. Nothing is ever about color.

Well, I got pulled over at a 4 way stop, because my high beams were on.
I got pulled over another night after being followed for 2 miles, because my windows were too dark ( at 2 am)
I have yet to be pulled over for any violations, have not recieved a speeding ticket in 9years.
HAd not been pulled over in 9 years before getting this car.

While being pulled over twice is not overwhelming, it sounds like both infractions were legit. With my dark windows I make a habit of rolling them all down if I get stopped. It shows some courtesy to the officer who has to decide if you a criminal or not. The last time I got stopped, I had just gotten my 06 Daytona and it still had a paper tag on it in the rear window of a dark tinted car. The lady officer was responding to an armed robbery call of a red 4DR with Dark windows. She was more than pleased that I rolled them down what with the circumstances and all. It was also 2:30 am and she didn't have a back-up. Another thing that I hear (scanner buff) is once some small town officers know your car they will hound you as much as they can if your previous experience with them had been bad (read mouthy) I used to get mouthy with cops that pulled me over but once I stopped they stopped stopping me. Any color will do to help you disguise the car until they spot it parked in your drive or see you in it.

Come on, not the cop VS donut thing again. I LOVE apple fritters and bear claws. LOL Dont ride with simple glazed hoops, yer GONNA get a ticket, might have to impound the car and toss you in with bubba. LOL Now toss me an apple fritter, its gotta be a good one, a lil crunchy on the outside and soft in the center, and as big as my face!!!!! THEN you and your family gets a free ride for a year LOL What??? Thats not preferential treatment?? I just dont like glazed donuts :) JR

Well, I have always been poliet, roll down windows, have liscence ready.
The thing is I work with local law enforcement, and the local boys don't mess with me.
It has been new non local state officers.
Like I said, I have not been pulled over in 9 years til I get this car.
But, anyway,
Right now I am thinking of Lemans Blue.

The first 2 yes, the last one, never again. The last time I had my license ready the cop ticketed me for seatbelt violation. Wallet is in my right butt pocket. Apparently he assumed I was fastening my belt. When I tried to explain I had been reaching for my wallet he got all attitude on me. No thanks, Ill present it when they ask.

Present it when asked and let the officer know where you are reaching and why.
One thing I learned from my family (lots of LEO on my Mom's side) is to have your hands resting on the steering wheel and stay calm. Fidgety people with hands out of sight make for a nervous officer. Nervous officers make great ticket writers.

From another cop's perspective....on a number of different radar courses the one common thing that I've heard and actually watched for myself is that a red car appears to be going faster they they usually are. For some reason, they do tend to stick out more than others. In saying that though....my car is likely going to be red. The only thing I ever tell people is to be polite. If you're an a$$, I can keep writing tickets all day, the more comments, the more tickets they get. Even if you are polite, you might still get the ticket, but you may end up with a cheaper fine amount. In BC, Canada, we have different levels of speeding fines. If someone is doing 40+ over the speed limit, it's a $400 fine, I can though opt to give the person a $196 fine instead. I did this for a girl a few weeks ago. She was really apologetic, but she still got a ticket. So being polite can pay off. There are other ways too to get a break, getting a ticket as a driver or a registered owner = points or no points, etc. Also, don't get out of the car until the cop tells you to, and keep you're hands in sight and get any documentation when you are told to do so.

One thing a coworker (who seems to get pulled over a lot) pointed out that he's then tested quite a bit: As soon as you come to a stop, put all the windows down and everybody in the car puts their hands outside the windows where they can be easily seen.
He says that since he started doing that, he's not received any tickets.
Yeah, it's not a particularly valid test... but if it puts the cop more at ease, then it can't hurt?

This also brings into play Radar Detectors, lots of officers will ticket for them no matter what. Make sure yours is not in a visible area or pull it down if you know your getting stopped. I have used one for 20+ years and it pays off it ways other than speeding. Just knowing an officer is in the area helps a bunch and a lot of the over zealous officers leave their's on all the time. On my way to work, (which is new to me since last year) I have seen the locals set-up in a business parking lot like a parked car to radar the highway beside it. I will usually only speed when I'm out in the sticks, alone. But it nice to know when they around.

No radar detector, no speeding.
Like I have said, its the car.
But, I got me a new car that will not attract cops attention, see my post in the outhouse.

Well, as said, I had not been pulled over in 8 years. Get this car and boom!
I have yet to be pulled over for speeding, spinning tires, aggresive driving or anything else, that I would blame on the car.
