Photoshop inspiration of project can be found here https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48657

I got this car from the nephew of a old lady who purchased it brand new from "Leaksville Ford" in 66. 2 door 289 Cruisomatic. Only mod to the car from the lady was an 8-track and some 6x9 speakers. She was the only on to drive the car and past away in 81. Car sat till then and I got it with only 45,800 on the odometer. Nephew or someone started to repaint the car and put it in primer. The nephew is the big guy trying to get the car started not me!

Drove it home. Got her up to about 70 and all the crap that had been sitting in the car blew all in my face. Imagine 20 year old dust smothering you but grinning because you love this car.

Air Ride starting to get mocked up. I made a mdf sheet the size of the upper trunk area that I can slide in. It's painted same splatter paint as the OEM trunk paint.

Rear airbags installed and aired down.

List now is to:
Finish stripping paint completely.
Finish airbags.
Drive train.

Are you using the coolride stuff? Or has ART come out with shockwaves for it?

Any subframe mods?

All the air bag stuff is pieces. ART does not offer any bolt on kit for this car.

I'm using two viair 380 compressors and slam specialties air bags. No shockwaves.

Subframe mods you lost me on. Car is coil's on all four corners and full framed. Basically pull the coil and install the bag.

Motor stock was a 289 and cruisomatic. 289 runs but you know how sluggish that thing is. Transmission has no reverse for some reason and leaks fluid like crazy. Its probably a line of fluid still that followed me the ride home.

I'm planning on a 352 and cruisomatic that are both freshly rebuilt. Only problem I'm running into is the motor mounts. Something about 3 holes and two hole mounts as the 352 is from a 63 galaxie and the mounts are different. I know I'm gonna have to make mounts unless I can find some frame mounts from a 64 and under big block ford. If anyone knows what I'm talking about I'm in need of those mounts.

I'm also planning on doing the scarebird disc brake conversion on the front and still trying to find options on the back.

Keep up the comments as I need inspration to work on this thing!

One thing I'm wondering about is the wheels. I'm pretty sure I'm going with the coy's c5 in silver but I'm not positive on size. I'd like to go with the 20x8 in the front and 22x8 in the rear but the 20x10 in the rear would look better with the deep lip on that wheel. I think 18/20 is too big of a difference in size and wondering if the 20/22 would look the same. I'm thinking the 20/20 with the 10 in the rear is gonna look the best.

hm I think if you're goin with 22" on rear you need a frame notch on the rear to get the slammed stance..

I used to have a '66 Galaxie, I loved that car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/galaxiefront-1.jpg

I put a 429 in mine.

As far as rear discs, if you have a 9" rear, you can use modern Crown Victoria rear discs. You have to get some parts from a doner car but with some $20 spacers you have rear discs for less than $300.

As far as getting parts, good luck. It's a one year only body style and not a popular one. No one really makes any repo parts for them, so ebay is your only option.

On the plus side, a full frame car with 4-link rear means pretty good handling!

Sorry, didn't mean to say "sub"frame... too used to all of the 69 camaros. I was just wondering if you were going to change up the 4 link or box the frame and stuff.

So the springs are like the ART coolride stuff?

I'm just trying to get an idea because our suspensions are the same, and I'm going to be looking for all of these parts in a few months....

Tanks, Solenoids, and Compressors. If I had to I could take it all out in less than 2-3 minutes. Its also the aqua black splatter trunk paint. I know I need to touch up that edge again.

Should be picking up the motor next week. Getting ready to go to Charlotte for the autofair so I gotta quit working on it after tomorrow.

Got most of the removable body minus the passenger door stripped and started epoxy priming those.

Does anyone know of a mesh styled wheel that will fit this old thing. 5x4.5 and I need 0 offset. I like the Boss Motorsports 339.

Looks great so far man, I love these old Galaxies so much I have two myself, 65 moredoor family cruiser and a 66 2 door sedan. I'd like to know more about yoye airride set up if you could PM me with the info and part #'s and such, the 65 is almost a roller again and now world be the time to put the bags in.

mulisha00
04-01-2009, 09:49 PM
Airbags are not by ART or Air Ride.

I used a slam specialties RE7 in the rear and RE6 in the front. I may could have went a larger on both with a 7 in the front and 8 in the rear. I'm fine with the set up I have now though. Slam bags are the best in my opinion as they don't bellow outwards when full, have internal bumpstops, and have a great collapsed and raised heights.

I ordered the plates for the upper and lower cups. Where ever you get the bags from should have the plates. Go to your local steel shop and get some 4" diameter tubing. I got mine cut to my lengths while I was there.

I'm using 1/2" electronic valves. They are really fast and the car comes up QUICK! Not really what I was looking for but I figured with a car this heavy I would need it. I have not put the motor in yet so that should slow it down a little. I can add ball valves and slow it down a little if I need to. I would think that 3/8 lines and valves are fine.

I used 2 viair 380 compressors and 2 5 gallon tanks. If your gonna pull up at the car show and air it down and then air it up when you leave 1 380 and 1 5 gallon tank is all you need.

Let me know if you need anything else.

I got the front on and somewhat mocked up today. I need to trim the lower control arm up a little. Hopefully next week I'll have some pics of the install and it will be in for good. I've got to order some Push to connect fittings and still fine tune a few things.

Hey, thanks for the info, you say a RE7 will fit up front? thats what I'll probably need since I'm running a FE big block. There is alot of info on suspension here http://www.fordmuscle.com/forums/galaxie-pages/483209-65-66-gal-suspension-upgrades.html especially if you want to upgrade to poly bushings, I'm slowly picking parts up to make mine a roller again.

mulisha00
04-02-2009, 06:08 AM
I've been following that thread on the poly bushings.

As far as the RE7. I think it will fit. The re6 fits perfect and if I had a few extra sets of hands and a welder here I could probably make the re6 work without cutting but I'm pretty sure its close. I would rather cut the spring pocket and be sure. RE7 I'm positive your going to have to cut.

I'm running a big block also.

mulisha00
04-18-2009, 09:07 AM
Well been busy trying to get some progress.

Air ride is 90% done. Have to re-run one line as one airline has a grove in the outside of it and I cannot get the air line to seal. Adding a digital gauge setup in the front. Then weld the bottom brackets in place and relocate the front shocks.

I just got my test wheel in. MSR 093 20x8.5 5x115 with 14mm offset. Fits good front and rear.

New engine. Instead of the 352 boat anchor, I'm going with a 347 build. I'm looking to hit the 400hp mark. Also scored a Tremec TK0500. So out with the 352, cruisomatic and in with more power and 5 speed.

Cool Galaxie project. Very nice wheel. How is the fit of the 5x115mm bolt pattern compared to the Ford 5x114.3mm (5x4.5)? I am also considering wheels with 5x115 bolt pattern for my '66 Galaxie project. The difference seems very minor. What size tires are you planning on running?

mulisha00
04-18-2009, 06:37 PM
I questioned my wheel guy that I got them from and he said he guaranteed they would work. They slid right on with no problems. I've got to get some lug nuts that I can actually get a socket on.

If you look at Boss and MSR wheels its alot of choices for a galaxie. I can get a 20x10 that I think will work but the offset is 24 instead of 14 with the 8.5.

Made in the U.S. and around $200 a wheel or less. I'm happy.:smoke:

I'm looking at 255/35/20 Right now.

As far as fitment for the wheel I have. Rear is no problem with the 8.5 and in the front its close but I think I will be okay. On the driver side to the rear of the control arms it looks as if it will rub at full lock to the left but to the front looks clear.

I'm in the process now of stripping the panels I have off and getting them in primer. So hopefully I'll have a bare metal, on the ground, with the wheels on pic for you guys soon, just like all these 6 figure builds I drool over on here.

Oh need some advice on the disc brake conversion.

I'm using the scare bird disc brake conversion and its basically a bracket that holds the caliper.

It uses a 68 mustang rotor
82-93 S10 2WD Caliper
I think seville hoses
ect.

Does anyone have any leads to some really good rotors? I was told by the owner of scarebird that cross drilled were not necessary and just get reybestos.

I would like a better caliper if possible. I cannot find anything but stock s10 stuff. Does anyone know of an aftermarket caliper that fits an s10?

I'm guessing I can just order the right length ss hoses from russel.

Still would like some ideas on the 9" rear end if a donor swap is possible.

The cheapest thing to do is find a Crown Vic in the junkyard - '96 to present I believe - and take the rear brakes from it.

You'll need a small spacer but everything else is bolt-on. Google "crown vic conversion" to find the sites with instructions.

Any of you other guys with Galaxie's done anything to yours lately.

I've got some work done since the weather broke in the past three weeks. My transmission has been in jail since September. It was supposed to be a two week job.

I've got my disc brakes 90% done. Slotted/Cross drilled rotors. Power stop ceramic pads.

Energy suspension bushings all throughout the front and rear. Boxed control arms.

I'll have some pics up soon.

Still working on my brakes...... Having the car outside sucks. When I have the energy to work on it, the weather is bad..... When the weather is good, I'm worn out from work.... I'm just trying to get mine back on the ground and rolling so that when I move, I can imediately take it with me.

I'm thinking I'm going to find a parts car (65-67) and steal the frame so that I can keep driving the car while I build the suspension which is my next project. Also, the enconomy needs to start turning around so that I can actually have funds to work on the car.

The only thing I hate about these cars is that there are no "kits" for anything. Everything has to be custom made..... which usually costs more....

Good luck dude! Keep the pics and updates coming!

Cheapthrillz did you go to the MB car show?

No I didn't......

I hope that Scarebird deal works out for you. It sucks that is the only brake kit for these cars (along with the SSBC deal which doesn't let you use your swaybar.... go figure).

I talked with Marcus Savitske about some suspension stuff and he said that he has a prestine '67 that he was thinking about doing some supsension work on. I may send him an upper and lower control arm to design some trick stuff for.... assuming I reuse the stock frame.... I've still got a lot to figure out on mine though.

The pics look good! Where did you get the wheels from?

the s10 calipers are the same as the GM metric chassis. wilwood, howe, and others all make bolt in caliper upgrades sue to the circle track guys.

hope that helps.

good luck with a good looking build

I haven't been to DSE, but that would make a fun trip for sure. Last year when I went to the Auto Fair, I was in a hurry because I had to meet up with Payton King to get a part. I think that Formula and I are going to try to go on Saturday. DSE would definately make for a fun trip though!

Any updates???

Not really. Been doing a lot of offroading lately and keep putting crap off. Landrovers suck. They (2) give me more than enough work to do.

I've got the bug lately as I've been on here poking around.

I've got the transmission back and ready to go. Headers. Smoothed and painted calipers black with ceramic paint.

I guess the list now is

Run new brake lines
New Master Cylinder (2 pot)
Rear suspension bushings and boxing control arms
ECT ECT

Heck I'm gonna go grab a cold one and head out to the garage now and do something.

Do you have any rear suspension pics?

What specifically are you looking for? Air ride setup or actual suspension? As of now all rear control arms ect are bone stock.

Love this project. I also have a '66 Gal 2 door that I am wanting to bag, with poly bushings, and some updated wheels. How did you set up your front shocks? Did you use the stock front sway bar or an aftermarket?

dude I love it! Wouldn't have been my first choice of wheels but I love old cars on the ground, especially a big Ford...

Wow - love it. I had a 66 Galaxie 500 convertible back from 87-93 while I was in college. Loved that car. Some great memories, awesome road trips and, well you know... a few things we cant talk about. We use to get 3 mountain bikes in the trunk and it would shut. We could also get 5 sets of golf clubs plus an ice chest full of beer in there too.

Dont kill me but I sold it in 93 to $5K. How sick is that? Had a new top, interior was in really good shape and a very solid paint job. Would kill for a deal like that now. She was cream with navy blue top and navy cloth interior.

Love the photo shop picture... I'm gonna have to get another Gal one of these days.

The front shocks will have to be relocated. As of right now I have not done that. Sway bar is stock for now but planning on going bigger with a adco I think its called.

Any suggestions on the brake line plumbing? I went from a single pot to a two pot disc/drum from a 67 galaxie and have to replumb with a proportioning valve. I'm guessing I use the rear fitting for the front and I have a bleeder screw on the front hole. Is that correct or do I use the hole on the bottom.

Doesn't Hotchkiss make something for the suspension on these now. I thought that was the deal that Jay Leno struck with them when they did the suspension for his Galaxie?

no they sure haven't!

The only things that they sell for gals are a way overpriced front sway and RCD shocks, which they do not stock and have a 2-3 week lead time ( ask me how i know ;-) )

I got my shocks from another place that had em to me in under a week for $50 less than hotchkis wanted.

I've got my fuel pump/filter mounted where you guys have your air ride. I also pulled the rear seat and enclosed the trunk. I figure when i'm rear for a fuel cell, having the pump/filter mounted near it will be optimal.

I think i'll be using a pit pal aluminum box to mount them in, just waiting for it to show up.
