Buddy of mine just opened up his car hauler which he had been storing his 70 BB Camino in for the winter and found freeze plugs on the floor! What do you think the chances are the block-heads are still good. I am not holding my breath. :(

We had a customers drag car do this in the fall. Pound some new frost plugs in it if you can do in the car, if not pull the engine and put it on a stand. With the new plugs in, block of heater hose fittings and such, and make a upper/lower rad hose combo with provisions for using a cooling system pressure tester to pressure the system up. Pull the plugs out too in case there's a crack inside a cylinder. Cross your fingers you don't get to see some waterworks.

Wow, they actually worked for someone! I've seen freeze-cracked blocks with the plugs still in 'em...

The last small block I had in my blazer blew the side of the block out and all of the freeze plugs were still in place

Had that happen to a pontiac engine once. 9" of cracks in the lifter galley. the real killer was the engine had less than 500 miles on it. I got busy, we had an unusual freeze and I forgot about it. went to start it and noticed the water pump pulley wasn't turning.:hand:

i hear an enclosed trailer can act as a freezer unit when it is cold out - is that true?

It could act like a cooler of freezer but I don't see how it could make it colder than the ambient temp. Insulate ...sure.

I had this happen to me on a 383 mopar. The good thing is they did what they were supposed to, on mine there was no damage.

These things aren't actually (freeze) plugs. they are casting plugs only there to be able to remove the casting sand in the casting process. If they poped out when frozen you might have just gotten lucky not they did what they were supposed to do.

Agreed freeze plugs are casting plugs. Looks like I am going to have to use this block as a water feature. Shame of it is he just put it in this winter and never fired it. I guess the water and antifreeze did not mix enough.

Did you test it to see if there was any real damage?

what wonders me is: are you guys using water for coolant?
