View Full Version : I have an LT1/alt wiring question

Evidently the alternator stays energized even after the key is off. So is it as simple as finding the wire that energizes it & connect it to a source that is only hot when key is in "ON" position? Or is there more to it?

To add to the above question: Where is the alt power source coming from? Through the PCM? I know I don't have a factory setup, but it is a factory reworked harness, still could be hard to say though.

The alt main output terminal (the large one) goes directly to the battery as I'm sure you already know.
The small wire turns off with the key and runs through the alt idiot light (I used an LED) with a 470 ohm resistor in paralell. The charging system is not wired through the PCM.
I assume your '95 is wired the same as the '96 I used.

I don't think my small wire shuts off when the key is off. So now I gotta trace it down.

The small wire definitely should not stay energized. I'm surprised this isn't running your battery down if the car sits more than 2-3 days. I ran mine through a standard dash bulb mounted behind the alternator and use a volt meter in the car to monitor if the system is charging.

I have the battery on a cutoff switch, so it didn't drain the battery. I noticed it because of a faint humming sound coming from the alt.

Ah okay that explains it then.
