:help:Currently I have a 8.5 rear end for my 67 camaro with an open carrier. What other cars with the 8.5 should have a posi traction carrier? I don't really want to pull the cover off of every 8.5 in the junkyard although this would be fun. I need a list of cars to look for. Thanks.

Um, good luck with that. I believe that almost anything that had the 8.5 10 bolt could be ordered with a positraction unit. Check ebay for rebuildable units or just go trutrac like I did and never lok back...

I'm in the same boat as you 8.5 and looking to swap in a posi. I hope someone will chime in with donor vehicles.

Thanks in advance

Most Trans Ams had a Traction Lock in them. Many Z28s did too. Many police cars and station wagons had them too. Be sure that you get the right series for the gear ratio that you are using. A 2.73 to 5.13 requires a 3 series. The 2.56 and 2.41 use a 2 series. If you want to upgrade to 30 spline axles then I have a very good used Auburn Pro for sale.

Are all 8.5 rear ends internals interchangeable?

Pretty much... yes.

Thanks for the replies. I had a buddy tell me once that the easiest way to tell a posi is by spinning the wheels. If both wheels move in the same direction it is a posi. Is this true?

Not always. IF the posi has worn clutches then it wil act like a standard differentia. If it has a standard differential and the cross shaft is damaged it will act like a posi. There is only one way to be sure and that is to remove the cover and look inside.

Thanks. I found on the internet that pretty much all GM cars from 1970-1990 have the 8.5 in them. I guess I wall start opening everyone I see.
