View Full Version : Converter question for Road Racing

I tried searching first but not much luck.
I have a 3k converter and didn't like it running AutoX. Last time I road raced, it had a stock converter. I would super love to have a stick but I'll have to "stick" with an auto for now.
I never tried it with the 3k and wonder if I'll have problems. I run 2 gearsets, 3.70 and 2.73's.
I figured if I wanted to road race bad enough, I'll swap the converter for a stocker if I have to.

Tight is better. Engine, trans and vehicle specs?

I plugged that stuff in last night in here.

Ha! Cool pic. Your combination is very similar to mine except that I have overdrive and lock up capability. Lemme guess: During Auto-X. Jamming on the brakes, your car feels like you slipped it into neutral. Back on the gas it slips, then grabs. I've experienced the same phenomenon on 4 cars and 3 well known converter brands. Expect the problem to be slightly less pronounced on a road course than in auto-x, but it will still be a problem
If it's tight, your stock converter will work way better on the brakes, but acceleration will suffer a little. Still I think it will work better than your street/strip converter--especially if you are experiencing too much wheelspin on the gas. If you'd like the best of both worlds I can build a small diameter, tighter converter that will feel tight on the brakes and still accelerate the engine nicely. Your trans will run a little cooler as well. The only sacrifice will be stage rpm at the drags--You will lose a few hundred rpm.
