I'm wanting to move... I've had just about enough of CT for a while. wheres a cool place for a 23 year old kid to go? Im thinking southern California, Vegas, maybe Denver? How about Austin Texas? What are some of the best locations in the US?

who LOVES where they live? I need to be in a more happening place, with more people my age, and a more exciting atmosphere. I have little to nothing holding me back from picking up and relocating some place cool and I want to do just that before its too late.

I love San Jose. I'd have to say that most of California from San Francisco to San Diego is pretty nice, especially if you stay within a 1-hour drive from the beach.

Phoenix is great. Gets a little too hot for my blood, but if I had to choose between the snow, freezing cold winters, dreadfully depressing areas that rain more days of the year than they have sunny days...insert Washington...lived there, tornado zones, hurricane zones, or Phoenix...I'd pick Phoenix.

No doubt, Austin is the best place....6th street on the weekends is a blast.....the only down side is all the Longhorn fans! If you have a free weekend, get some of your buds and fly down, but wait until football season is rolling to get the full effect. Traffic sucks bad though...last time I was in town was for a meeting and it took me 2.5 hours to go 21 miles....granted that was at 5 p.m.....also, no state taxes and some nice talent in the area....

Like Tony said...Id say anywhere San Diego or SF/Bay area bro. I'm in LA and thats where I'm looking at moving. Theres so much to do and it never gets bored!

Another vote for Austin. Denver is great, too. I've lived in both places.

Denver has lots of stuff happening down town almost every night and the mountains are very close. The weather is not nearly as bad as you would think. The main drawback is the women (or lack thereof) a friend of mine says this about Denver - "they should call it Menver, cause the men outnumber the women 2 to 1 and half the women look like men!" (they're very "granola" here.)

Austin is awesome. Weather is great (humidity comes and goes - depends on which way the wind is blowing.) Real estate is cheap. The surrounding hill country is some of the most beautiful in the country. The local "talent" is top-notch. Great music scene. Lots of young people. 6th street kicks @$$. And the car scene is very good.

Move over here to Brisbane in Australia and I'll move over there to the US :) There are plenty of single women, the car scene is not bad at all and heaps to do, plus its another country :D

We would either choose Seattle, WA or San Jose, CA depending on where work would want me. We were happy with both places when we visited there last year.

I have to agree with some of the above, from the bay area down to San Diego is some nice country. I haven't been further inland than Vegas so can't comment more :)

another vote for Austin. the scene of 6th is always rocking, the locals are very friendly and open, great music and weather not to
mention the texas ladies are so fine. unlike the west coast, it is still
affordable to live there. the city is big but not too big imo. the food is also very good especially at the yellow rose.

I LOVE Huntington Beach!

Just moved here about 1.5 years ago from the LA area and loving every minute of it! The vibe between LA and H.B. is night and day different. For a big city next to the beach, it's definitely got a lot of car culture! Lots and lots and lots of local classic cars driving around on the weekend too. A lot of people on their beach cruiser bikes (old and young) just relaxing and pedaling around town with their flip flop shoes. People still walk around the neighborhood and take the time to say "hi, whats your name ... did you just move in recently?". Or if I am working on my project truck in the garage or in the driveway, people walking by will stop and just chat me up, introduce themselves and tell me where in the neighborhood they live and who else is working on a project a couple blocks away. People still look out for each other here and are very open and friendly. It's got small town people and values in a big city.

My father was in the Air Force for 20 years, so I have lived a lot of places, but H.B. feels the most like home for me.

I have to ask.....whats a detached 3 bedroom home with a two car garage worth in Huntington Beach California.....?????

A single family residence (not a condo or town house) with 3 bed, 2 bath and 2 car garage (1800-2000 sq ft) is in the $550k-$700k range. If the house has been nicely remodeled, large lot or has a pool, it might be a little more. Most likely the home will be about 20-30 years old and you would be about 5 miles from the beach.

The reason I sold my home in LA (Marina del Rey) about 2 years ago and moved to HB was a lot of homes in HB have 3 car garages! :yum:

Whatever you do, DON'T go to the culutral-vacuum that is NE Florida. It's OK for families, but most of my single buddies are trying to get out. Of course, most of them are military, so you can take that for what it's worth.

Thanks.

well thanks for the advice guys, now its time for a tour de US. I've never heard a bad thing about Austin. I'm open to any thing though. The car scene in California is very appealing, But I work on cars and cant afford a half million dollar home yet. Plus I'd rather put that cash into my vehicles and ventures.

I'm pretty good in a shop any you guys hiring? I've spent most of my time doing high end Porsche resto/race car builds, restored muscle cars, ive done hot rods, and I can flag 70-90 hours at a dealership doing collision work. I've got pay stubs and pictures to back this stuff up. I wont get into this any more because I know this isnt the employment section but please PM for more details.

Other than dirty hippies, Austin is great! Round Rock is very nice and there are plenty of other suburbs around the area. Houston doesn't have much to see but our economy is still pretty sound and Austin is only 2.5 hrs, San Antoinio is 2.5 hrs, Galveston 1 hr, Dallas 5hrs......

We would either choose Seattle, WA ....

If I were younger, not married, and weren't attached to anything, I'd go to Australia. It's a young country with lots of women.

WTF!?! Seattle? Bro - I'm in the Seattle area. The weather sucks. Period. We get MAYBE 2 months out of the year where the weather is nice. The commute is bad, and lots of :machine: smelly hippie chicks. Seattle is not my scene, but I have a decent job with decent pay, so I'll stick around for the next couple of years.

If GM gives me the boot I'll be moving to the Phoenix area pronto to eek out a meager living for the rest of my life. I'll be poor, yes...but I'll also be in a t-shirt in Febuary. Nice trade off as far as I'm concerned. Beautiful area too. Close to Cali, Vegas, SEMA, Mexico, palm trees, cacti....ahhhhhhh, I can smell the sweet Arizona air right now. It was 91 there yesterday, can you imagine? Flip the numbers around and that's what we had here in Michigan.

Yeah, I played golf in that 91 yesterday. I'll tell ya, it was WARM! It's just too early in the year to be seeing 91.

Don't worry too much Tony, at this rate housing prices in Phx are going to be on par with those in Michigan in no time at all! I have no doubt that you'll find a job with one of the Aerospace companies around here (or wherever) and you'll do much better than just a meager living.

550-700K!!! Great googley mooley! I live in longview Texas, about 2 hours east of DFW and an hour from gambling in Shreveport, La. I have my current house on the market...2600 sq ft, two car garage w/ extra storage, 3 bed 2 bath 1 arce w/ inground pool....245k...of coarse everything is relative....the only reason it is on the market is I am getting transfered to Wichita, KS.....which is home for me...job market is good here, i have a hard time finding automotive techs and the town is booming...the only down side..no Hooters...

Yes, Texas is spoiled when it comes to real estate prices. We will soon be relocating from Denver to the Dallas area. I came across a house in the town we want to move to (Forney, TX). I swear I'm not making this up:

Built in 1998
Full brick
2400sq/ft
4 bedrooms
2 living areas
3 bathrooms
1 office/study
3 car attached garage
On an acre of landscaped property w/ in-ground sprinkler system
200' concrete driveway

all for $224,500.

Sounds great, right?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, at the end of the 200' concrete driveway, behind the house, is a 40'x50' insulated metal building with heat/air, 200amp service, and an 18'x21' apartment/loft area.

I absolutely LOVE it. Wife is so so on it. We'll see who wins out.

550-700K!!! Great googley mooley!

That's hilarious, as I actually thought he was UNDER pricing homes in that area. SoCal is absolutely ridiculous. We sure must like the sunshine, or maybe we're just crazy.

Meanwhile, my buddy just bought a 3bd 2 bath house on a couple of acres in a decent neighborhood south of Atlanta out of foreclosure for $42k, and the average home in Detroit is now $7,500, or substantially less than the price of a decent used car.

SoCal is great, but if I were 23 again, I'd find a mid-sized city in the Midwest/South, (preferably one with a couple of colleges/lots of coeds), find a job, and be able to afford a house while I was still young.

vp23271

I think we must love the traffic too lol! I have seen parades move faster than the 405 freeway. I have lived in Seattle and Arizona too, and real estate in SoCal is way more $$ compared to other areas of the country. If I lived in Nashville or Austin, I would get a huge plot of land away from the city and have a nice size shop in the back lot. But the weather in SoCal keeps people coming. If I did not buy a house when the market was reasonable, their would be no way for me to afford a house now even with prices coming down.

Right now California is a screwed up place. Arnold is trying to add taxes to make up for the budget deficit. Also, California has already announced that we have a drought problem in the winter! These are some of the reasons that I am thinking about getting away.

I almost forgot about the screwed up gun laws of California.

I live in Vegas now and I think its great. The housing market is so low you can pick up a 3 bedroom hous with a 2 to 3 car garage for $100 - $150k. No state income tax. My 67 Chevelle was like $43 to register. Newer cars are a rip off to register (a $32K VW was $400+ for the year) Your 4 hours from Cali. There is always something going on. There are a bunch of high end car dealers Porsche MB Lotus Ferrari Lambo. But with the economy it might be tough to find a job (anywhere for that matter)

We almost moved to Austin 2 years ago but couldn't sell the house we were in for what we needed. Other then that we would have been there....

Go to www.realtor.com (http://www.realtor.com) and just search around to get an idea of whats available as far as houses go...

Im agreeing with Huntington. Grew up in Lakewood and always use to cruise pch in my chevelle. Moved when I was 18 to North Carolina because I joined the Army and have been heart broken ever since. If you want car culture I would go with Southern California hands down. I see more old muscle cruising the streets there in two weeks than I do the whole year out in N.C.

Stay in the northeast to make your money, retire elsewhere with a lower cost of living. For now, buy a snowmobile... it helps make the winter go by faster, and Maine doesn't really have a trail speed limit!

Here's my 2 pennies; I live in Hawaii basically for the ocean, but I'm from Houston and love it. It's a great car town. Jobs are plenty. Economic downturn hasn't put it's boot in Houston's a$$ either. Real estate is ridiculously affordable. The women are gorgeous, food is good, and it's an hour from the beach or the lake or the river- take your pick. If you're into night life, check out the Richmond strip (with cruising between club/ bar stops an extra bonus). The negatives are an absurdly hot and humid summer season. But what you have to ask yourself is, what do you want out of your move? BTW, Hawaii sucks for the car hobby. There are no tracks anymore, only one speed shop, limited shows and cruises, and there is absolutely no such thing as a roadtrip.

funny... my wife and I have been sort of asking the same questions. however, she doesn't like the heat, so Texas and AZ is out. the Rockies and the eastern seaboard are most attractive to me.

I don't understand how you guys can afford a house in CA? right now I live in a 3bd/2ba that cost me $160k 5 years ago. I can't imagine spending 5 times that on a house the same size. I definitely can't afford 5 times the mortgage.

I think it'll depend on where I can find a job. fortunately, IT seems to still be doing well in our economy.
