Any ideas on where to get parts (joints and shaft) to build my own steering shaft for my 71 Bird? Flaming river wants $200, seems to be quite a lot for two joints and a shaft.

I got mine from Borgeson (http://www.borgeson.com). $270 for a vibration damping joint, a regular joint and a collapsable shaft. They are excellent quality and not cheap. Almost half of that was the damping joint. The difference is amazing. the car now responds instantly and there is no 'play' in the steering. See the photo below. The old shaft is on top and the new one on the bottom. The larger joint on the left is the damping one.

A new rag joint is about $70 so I don't think it is that expensive.
