View Full Version : How long has your car been with you?

I was reading the forum and I ran across this thread:

https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53236

The movie looks amazing and it made me think about how long some of us have had a relationship with our cars. I know certain people buy and sell cars a lot during their lives, while others tend to have one of just a few cars. I fall under the latter category. So I want to start this off and say that I have owned my car since I was 16. I got it around April of 1986. So next month my relationship with my car will celebrate its 23rd anniversary.

Anyone else?

Andrew

I still have the 67 camaro that belonged to my sister in the early 80's. I learned to drive in it and took my driving test in it in 1986. I hope to pass it on to my sons at some point. Its inline for the PT treatment as a father son project for them in 3 or 4 years.

Bought my SS car in December 1994, when I was 12... still never driven it though, so while it's not for sale, it's not really that sentimental to me either.

The car that means more to me is the Malibu I bought in May 1998 when I was 15, and restored as a father/son project while in high-school, and have been driving and modifying since.

I've had my car going on 11 years now. For 8 of those years it was my only friend in life and the only thing I could depend on to keep me happy. I don't know if anyone else relates to that, but that movie Mr. Vengeance posted strikes a nerve in me. I DEFINITELY want to go watch that one.

Traded another car for my '64 GTO back in 1989. The car I traded for it ('57 VW) I had owned since 1976, it was the car I drove in high school.

I bought my '64
Tempest back in 1996.

I still have a '66 VW Type II pickup that I bought back in 1985.

I'm the original owner of my '02 WS6, I took delivery of it in October of '01.

I keep most of my cars for a loooong time.

I got my 67 in 98 or so but due to life its status has changed little.

I got my 77 8/05 and got it on the road in 07. My 1st cars were a 76 LT and 77Z. So I am far more comfortable with my 77 than 2 years of driving might indicate. It's like I moved on to the better sister, lol.

My father gave me my first car, a '65 Mustang fastback as a $350.00 rust bucket in 1979. We spent a lot of time togther under that hood. That little car has seen me through high school, college, several jobs/homes/cities, the passing of my father and the end of my 20 year marriage. Many cars have come and gone, but that one will be with me forever.

I bought my '69 Skylark in 2004, this year makes it five years. I started the body-off resto last year, and hope to be driving it as soon as possible, I have plenty of parts and tools to complete it, but theres still much more to get. I've been through everything with this car, and other ones may come and go, but this one's with me to the end.

I've had my '85 S10 blazer since early '07, so this month makes two years. It's been good to me, but time to retire it to the shop and start tearing it apart for a much-needed rebuild.

The '92 S10 hasn't even been around a week yet, but I also don't plan on letting either S10 go any time soon.

I just wish I kept my '87 caprice! :banghead:

In 1969 my folks were living in Phoenix and my mother got pregnant with me. My Grandparents bought my Camaro in March of 1969 (it's a '68 though) because they wanted a new car to drive to AZ when I was born.

So technically, my relationship with this car began in-utero and will be 40 years this month.

I bought my 67 when I was 17 (1993) for 5200 bucks. When I went into the Marine Corps (1995), she went into a barn at my Stepfather's lake house...
I finally got her back 1.5 years ago when I bought my first house and actually had a garage to work in!

I purchased my 78 WS-6 Trans-Am new in the fall of 1977 and have had it ever since. I pulled the original 400 engine and stored it with all the original exhaust, etc. I have everything original for the car. I built a strong 469 Pontiac motor for it with all the good stuff and a full 3" exhaust. The car is all original other than that including the original paint. Car still looks like it just came off the showroom floor and interior still smells like a new car yet. Only has 17,000 original miles on it. Never driven in bad weather. Have also had my 69 Camaro for 12 years.

I got my 71 Chevelle in 1987 when I was 15 yrs old. Three years later I traded the car back to my father. I was gonna trade it in on an S-10 so me and dad swapped cars. I traded in his car instead. His intention was to keep the go fast parts and sell it off.

I came home from school one day and he tossed me the keys. He teared up and said that he would do anything to have his first car back and he wasn't gonna let that happen to me. He said now that I had no money in it at all that I could always keep it and it was his gift to me.

I still have it to this day.

My 67 Camaro was my first car. I saved up for a project car and found a POS rusted out shell for $2000. I got it when I was 16... Back in 1998...
Took me two years to complete it with lots of help from my Dad. I'm still tinkering with it to this day and will NEVER sell it!

picked up my chevelle in 92 the day after my 15 birthday. Spent the next year restoring it with my dad. Drove it daily when there wasn't salt on the roads. Wrecked it in 94 two days before I graduated. It sat until fall 05. I started building a house and working on the car at the same time. Needless to say the house is done the car is still in pieces.

I have had my Challenger since 1981. It has been through many versions. Street racer in early 80's drag car late 80's-early 90's. Sat for years after that. Now in a full pro-touring rebuild. My wife has tried to get me to sell when it was sitting because [your not doing anything with it you might as well sell it]. I have told her I have had it longer than her I will not be selling it. Probably would have passed along to my first born but had twins. Now maybe to the third born.

My first car was a graduation present in 1992. It was a running driving plane jane 307/PG 1969 Camaro needing quarters and rockers... I made the mistake of pulling it completely apart. You know how one thing is bolted to another that I could just pull, clean, paint and put back.... yeah right.... well I stillhave it... Sitting in storage.... I did manage to get the rust repaired and a quick shot pf primer.... Unfortunately its on the east coast and I'm out here in Vegas... working on other projects....

The Galaxie has been in the family for 44 years now.... My Dad grew up with it, and so did I. I learned to drive a straight drive in it (which means I could probably drive a tank/big rig). My father purchased it for $1 from my Grandfather when he graduated from college, and when I graduate in May, hopefully, he will sell it to me for $1. It is probably the only car that I will ever LOVE.... (LOVE, not make love TO)

I took ownership of my car in 1989 but I started wrenching on it at age 14 (1985). As far as my "relationship" with the car; it would have to be around the mid 1970's when I was just a little boy. Grampa would let me and my brother go out to the garage and sit in it during our Sunday visits at the grandparents house. We would play "race car" in it. If I had to guess, I've probably been associated with this car approximately 32-33 years

23 years. Bought my SS in 1986 with 17K miles, and it was my daily driver for years. I drove my wife to deliver our baby in it in 97, in 2000 it made unhappy engine sounds and was parked in the garage for 8 years. It now has a new crate engine/od tranny, and will be serving driver duty and getting a few PT-style upgrades.
My 11 year old son cannot wait to be old enough to learn how to drive in it, he already smokes us on the Kart track, so i'm gonna keep an eye on the keys...LOL

While not a PT car I've had my 67 'Bird since April 1977. Paid $300 and limped it home. STarted my current rebuild too many years ago. Title is still actually in my mom's name. When I mention any progress I've had in getting it back together she always makes a comment "You mean MY car ?". My daily driver is a 97 GTP. GREAT car. I've had it since I drove it off the lot in March of 1997. I usually keep my cars for several years. Before the GTP I had a 87 GTA that I kept for 11 years.
