That Hellion twin turbo setup that runs thru the factory blower on the 03-04 Cobra's is pretty gnarly! 1000 rwhp for $6000 plus crossmember and misc. Anybody had any experience with this setup or anything similar? I've never seen that done. I think the closest thing I've seen was the 80's/90's pro-street cars with two 8-71's stacked on top of each other. Everybody knows how sweet that was...Oh no, no it wasn't.

That is definitely a badass setup, I believe they got one that put down almost 1200 @ the wheels.

It's strange to hear you say you've done this John. I've never looked at a magazine and expected to agree with the styling, construction, parts combination or engineering of every car highlighted in that magazine. I guess I've just never viewed that as a reasonable expectation. Ultimately it's your decision where you spend your money and for whatever reason, I was just surprised that one car or one issue would make that decision for you.

More on topic, I'm curious as to how long those mod motors can last with that kind of compound boost.

Hee, hee, hee. With Chevy engine lovers always stuffing them in other makes, it's fun seeing them get a taste of their own medicine. Now you know how the (insert favorite make other then Chevy here) owners feel.

Not really that new of a concept, Detroit Diesel has been stacking turbo's and superchargers for years. Alot of the time, a companies new technology, or new idea, is a rehased version of a concept done years ago but forgotten...

It really just makes me wanna buy an 03 cobra, you can pick up those in great shape for around 20k. imagine the performance of that car for a 30k investment...dollar for dollar thats damn near impossible to beat.

I believe Rick Doberton did it in the 80's with a pair of turbos and a 6-71. Had it stuffed in a tubbed, blue Chevy II.
Of course, my memory could be playing tricks on me. Happens to us old farts.

I always wonder why people are so hell bent on keeping the same marque components in the shell when there may be better components or you have a preference or experience with those components that you like.
From the looks of things I would guess that the owner of the RS/SS in Hot Rod this month probably has extensive knowledge of those parts and how they work and perform and is more comfortable with them along with his wanting to be different.
I see V-8's being stuffed in VW's but noone seems to raise an eyebrow about that. Old drag cars used to have bodies from one maker with an engine from another maker. I just don't understand the mentality.

Yeah, my "too good to be true" meter is pegging on this one.

Can someone with more turbo knowledge address the issues / lifespan / etc. of a turbo-supercharged engine like the Hellion set-up?

I just can't see 1000 long-term reliable streetable hp for $7,500, but I could be wrong.

The detroit diesels we have at my work for emergency power have a similar setup. Actually 4 turbos and 2 blowers. Anyway the reason for the set up on our engine is the blowers help give instant power while the turbos take over at the top end. Actually we have a newer generation detroit diesel with only 1 blower and 2 turbos putting out the same power as the one mentioned above with about 1/3 cubic inches. The reason for this is that the blower actually gets in the way of the turbos. The newer design has a bypass around the blower once the engine gets humpin so the blower is only used for the initial load. Not too sure about the set up for the mustangs. I would think a well sorted out twin turbo setup would work better without the blower.

I cringed a bit when I first heard about the 2JZ Camaro. It's something I'd never do with my 68, but reading the article the man is a true car enthusiast and I have a lot of respect for that. Plus, I'd love a ride in the thing.
