Buddy of mine is looking into buying a 496 Bigblock on ebay..

it has 640 FT lbs of torque and 530HP..

it only has a performer intake and world merlin heads and 10.3 compression..forged pistons, forged crank, roller rockers and comp cam.

HOw is it they can sell this motor for $4000 with a dyno sheet...?

Sounds way cheap.. with quallity parts..

Probably cast crank, not forged. Blem heads. Dyno'd one engine and just copy that sheet and send it out with every engine that's built the same.

I have a 496, Canfield 310s, 8.5 compression, 246@50 cam, makes 540 / 575 real power. With 10 to one, 640 is close if it has good heads. With all that said, It takes $4000 in the top end.

I have been looking at small blocks on ebay and have come to the conclusion through a nights worth of research that with 100s of listings very few actually seem to sell. Not to mention one seller has over 30 listings for complete engines as of 3/8/05.

The guys that are selling engines, 1-4 per month, are listing anywhere from 2-5 at a time and maybe selling 1 of them. Then relisting the unsold engines again.

Scat makes cast cranks as well as forged, some i-beam rods are only rated to 500hp and if you look elsewhere on e-bay you will see many "factory seconds" of Merlin heads for sale.

Just be warned and remember the old saying-------> "How fast you want to go depends on how much you want to spend".
