I am considering building a PT Ford. I wanted some suggestions... I absolutly don't want to build a mustang. Other than that I am open to any Ford/Mercury from the 30's to the early 70's. I am leaning toward a '67 or so Fairlane, but would like to get some other ideas. Any one have a an idea for a Ford PT Beast???

I vote for a 62 falcon!!
It would be differant an cool to see some fat tires on all four corners,a stroked small block ford in it. maybe do a full frame, roll cage, custom gauges.

Maybe i can build one some day! LOL

I am not sure on the model but its 62 1/2 or 63 1/2 there also was an option for a 427 or some big motor. It was one of the cars that i thought about doing a custom with.

One of my after high school cars was a 67 Fairlane. 390, 4 sp with gate shifter.

Why oh why did I sell it?

Torino GT 500 Fastback with the hide-aways. Love the one-piece tailight housing with the honeycomb look. Definitely a car that needs to be built.

I'm currently transforming a 1966 Fairlane (427so, toploader, "N"
4.30:1 rear, etc.) with an SUV ride height to a PT car.

http://www.cs.odu.edu/~mln/fairlane/delivery/IMG_0247.JPG

my list:

- 17" Billet Specialities (225/50, 255/45)
- Baer 13"/12" discs
- Global West UCA
- 1 1/8" front sway bar, 7/8" rear bar
- rearched rear springs (2" drop)
- Cal-tracs traction bars
- 2" drop front coils
- sub frame connectors

I'm very excited about the project, but I can say that although
most parts swap from a Mustang -- its still not a mustang.
For example, the rear leaf spacing was just different enough
that the parking brake hits the rear leafs. We're having new
mounting brackets made to compensate.

I love mustangs, but having something different is great fun.
But when it comes to parts + fitment, I sure do envy how
easy the mustang (and camaro) guys have it...

I'd also suggest a Falcon or Mercury Cougar -- they're both
mustangs underneath. I've had 2 68 cougars in the past
and they were great fun.

If you really want to roll in style, step up to a Galaxie ;-)

A 66-67 Fairlane or 65-66 Comet Cyclone would be a good basis for a PT car.

As the owner of '70 Mach, I understand not wanting to do a Mustang. I do think a '67 Fairlane is an excellent choice... for example, here is one that I think was featured in PHR this past year. Totally amazing!!! Charlie Libby's Fairlane (https://www.pro-touring.com/featured_cars/Charlie_Libby_66%20Ford_Fairlane/charlie_libby_66_ford_fairlane.htm) . Or consider a Ranchero as a cool alternative.

Here are my other alternatives in order of preference:

1. '72 Torino Sport (closest thing to a US version of Mad Max's Australian XBGT Falcon)

2. '71-'74 Cougar (just don't do a convertible)

3. '68-'69 Torino fastback (especially if you can get a Talladega nose for it) or Cyclone (with the Spoiler nose)

4. '70-'71 Torino Cobra (definitely gotta have the hideaways...) or Cyclone or maybe even a Montego.

5. '67-'70 Cougar (I'd probably prefer a '67-'68 personally)

6. Pinto (who the heck else is gonna PT a Pinto???) If you could pull this off, it'd be one to remember!

Otherwise, I've seen quite a few Mavericks, early Fairlanes & Falcons, and Mustangs getting plenty of attention lately. I'd like to see more of the bigger intermediates. Once you step up to the bigger bodies (Galaxies, T-birds, Continentals), you're stepping into tougher territory, but that might make it worthwhile to try... :naughty:

Hope this helps...

My neighbor is building a 70 2 door montego. It has 17 inch wheels 295 45's and 255'40 in front. 4 wheel wildwood brakes, global west suspension and He's building a stroked 460 for it. Should be good for about 600 horsepower. He's mating that up to a 6 speed and painting it silver with red interior

Thanks for the awesome response! The ultimate goal is a car that will pull 1 lateral g or more. . . if that isn't enough... the goal is to run 10's on pump gas and 9's with some juice. I have seen some chevy's that can do it... but no fords come to mind?

What do you guys think? Can it happen?

Wow man, that is everything I have envisioned a Pinto could ever be. I, however, have been trying to go down the forgotten Chevy sub-compact path... I've been trying to get a 36,000 mile '79 Chevy Chevette from it's original owner for the past 4 years... Most of those miles were from behind a motorhome too. Thing looks brand new... Thinking of only a 4.3V6 and a six speed in it though. Dang... Caddy 5hun :worship:

this is a great idea... Eliminators are great looking, and cougars
can still be had for a reasonable price.

re: DB's mention of Charlie Libby's Fairlane above... that
car is *excellent* -- I absolutely love it. But the "problem", so
to speak, is that it is so custom that it is nearly as unattainable to
me as a Troy or Chip car... but I'm hoping it will free Fairlanes
from their roll of "drag-only"....

64 Mercury Comet. Crisper lines and cooler trim than the Falcon cohort. Hard to argue with the Torino, but man they are heavy. If you want it to fly, go as light as possible, makes EVERYTHING easier.

Have a blast with it!

May I suggest a route that I am taking now. I suggest an '81-82 Ford Granada/Mercury Cougar (sedan, NOT XR-7, although one could make a case for the coolness of that project as well). If you can't obtain one of these, then I would suggest a Fox-Body LTD/Marquis. In my opinion for what it's worth, you can't go wrong with either one of these!
These cars share essential mechanicals with the 5.0 Mustang. Most any hot hop-up that would fit a Mustang will also fit a Granada.
Just one example of a hot, hopped-up Granada:

Vinnie's Granada (http://www.geocities.com/quickltd/vinniesgranada.htm)

Merely thinking outside of the box!

68 Torino GT COUPE (I personally think the Fast-backs are ugly, cars too big to be a fast back) Plus there are ALOT less GT coupes than there are GT fastbacks (3-1 ratio fastbacks-coupes). After the 70 malibu is done for my wife I'm hunting for a 67-68 Cougar or a 61-64 Falcon.

As a follow-up to my last posting under this thread, versions of the original Fox-Body (i.e., the Ford Fairmont/Mercury Zephyr) Fords would also make excellent candidates for a Ford PT beast. The only reason why I was hesitant to mention these at the onset was because the early model Fairmonts/Zephyrs had really funky mechanicals, especially as it related to the fuel delivery system. If anyone wants to build a Ford PT beast based on an early Fairmont/Zephyr, they have to keep this in mind, especially if they swap to EFI.
However, like to Fox-Body Granada, what will fit a Mustang will fit a Fairmont with but a few exceptions.

I was gonna keep this one to myself, but I think it might be too cool to keep... If you wanna do something really unusual, consider a '67 german Ford Osi. My dad owns one of these, and I've always wanted to do something cool with it like this (another photochop):

In stock form, it's a pretty classic '60 European sportscar. I tried to photochop the PT into it... the big TTIIs, tangerine-strawberry paint, front spoiler, lowered, tinted windows, blacked out trim, shaved handles, etc... here is the original pic:

It's a German made Ford called an OSI (oh es eye, or ohsee) built in '67 & '68. The OSI company did the body design, Ford built 'em using German Capri bits (motor, some suspension stuff, etc.). Most parts are very difficult to locate since the car wasn't built in huge numbers. My father bought one while we were stationed in Germany in the early '80s for approximately $1800 US. It now sits in a barn in NC with an early Alfa Giulia, '65 GS convertible, '69 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe, and a nice '74 F100 shortbed pickup. They're all in need of restoration and the barn is a dirt floored, barely standing, shack that hasn't been opened in a good 5 years. :banghead: One day they will be mine!

Technically it's my shortbed since my coin paid for it... I think it was $500... I can't quite remember. I think about it occasionally, especially since it's got my Mach's original 351W (future 408???) sitting in the bed.

I've always wanted to build a Maverick. You can pick them up very cheap too. Just a thought.

If I were to build something a little newer, I'd go with a late 70's early 80's Fairmont all decked out with Fox Body suspension goodies from Maximum Motorsports.

Peace out!

I vote for 1964 or 65 Fairlane, kinda a thunderbolt that cuts corners. Next would be the 1969 Cougar (and mustang parts make it cheaper) in a Trans am styling. Then comes the 1966 or 67 Fairlane or any of the Torinos from 1968 to 1970. How about a 1970 Falcon.......way cool. If you wanted to go way off the choosen path and still do a Mustang........Mustang II, that makes the Pinto mainstream.

I tip my hat to anyone doing a off model of the bigger manufactures, you can tell this cause I'm doing the pro-touring thing to a Monte Carlo.

My vote on a 69-70 Maverick. Work with its advantages and keep the weight very low, aluminum 8.2" smallblock, not too big wheels, fortified T5, race style interior with lots of riveted bare aluminum sheet (hide sound deadener behind it!), fuel cell, roll bar........
Damn, now I want one myself!

I say go with a cougar or torino, I have a 71 cougar conv. with a FI 5.0 and AOD, lowered with staggerd 18's and future plans call for better brakes and suspension mods but it's a cool pro cruiser with air tilt and a/c and you never see another modded one. Got 26mpg on power tour last year......

In terms of parts availability and pricing, a Cougar is the best "b-list" model to do because pretty much all the Mustang parts fit on it.

I still kinda miss my '66 Galaxie though - 429, with 4-link rear end and decent suspension up front too, making it go around corners wasn't too bad. But it's a one-year-only design and it's extremely unpopular for some reason.
