Don't get too excited, it doesn't look like this yet...

Thanks to Carter Hickman at http://www.carterhickmandesigns.com/wordpress/?page_id=6 we can all get a glimps into the future. You want to know what your ride will look like, ask Carter.

I have met a few of the members through various outings in including the regular Cruise the Crest run through Angelus Forest, SEMA show and the Pro-Touring dinner held during the SEMA show. I have to say you guys are great people with great info.

I bought my 69 camaro last year in Feb. as a matter of fact exactly one year ago! Since I purchased the car I have been very very very busy, thinking. Actually I got to work on the car the day it came home. I purchased the car with a fresh 350 that had zero miles and still needed to be tuned before I could take it for a test drive. After getting the motor together I began to really get an idea of what was needed. First thing was a windshield.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/499-1.jpg?t=1235357879

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/924-1.jpg?t=1235357706

So once i got the windshield and installed exhaust I quickly became aware of how bad the drum brakes were. The brake shoes were old the peddle was stiff but it worked. So i decided to put the dash and guage cluster back together. Surprisingly the interior looked pretty good for a 40 year old car. I did have to install a new dash pad and the head liner was blown out of the car as it was towed with no windshield (not by me of course).

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/10591-1.jpg?t=1235358739
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/10621-1.jpg?t=1235358779

I started driving the car around the neighborhood on probably 25 year old tires. Can you believe I actually made it home each time?

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/942-1.jpg?t=1235359096

That yard stick was being used to gage the ride height after cutting a coil. So anyway, those polyglas GT tires just weren't going to cut it. I really wanted to deal with the bad brakes and figured I may as well look into the suspension at the same time. Anyone who has upgraded to disc knows you can't hide them behind a 15" wheel; at least not a 12" rotor.

I was so imbarrassed about the yellowed paint I decided to see what a few hours of wet sanding and buffing would do to 40 year old paint.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/538-1.jpg?t=1235359827

Not too bad

Getting back to the mechanics, I shelled out an untold sum (I really didn't want to total the receipts) for DSE 3" drop leafs, CCP drop spindles, QA 1 coil overs, tubular upper and lower control arms, hotchkis sway bar, ATS steering box, tubular upper and lower control arms and whatever else I have forgotten.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/1009-1.jpg?t=1235359574

All that and to think it gets hidden behind a set of 18x8 and 19x9.5 Into's

After a trip to the alignment shop I was finally ready to get out on the road and enjoy this puppy, at least until the next evolution...

I'm pretty sure those are the Intro ID 313 wheels. I was thinking about those for mine but wound up with CCW's. They look excellent on your car!!!!

In deed, the car is solid. There is some rust on the car but it looks to be limited to the lower quarters and about the size of silver dollars. The car was born in California and has apparently lived its whole life here. No rust on the frame at all.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/510-1.jpg?t=1235446557

What looks like rust is on the surface and was due to wet towels in the truck

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/507-1.jpg?t=1235446494

Since the windshield was cracked and the rubber was dried the upper dash was rusted at the bottom of the windshield. That was all repaired when I purchased the car. I did have to finish the welds and prep and paint the area before the winshield went in.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/521-1.jpg?t=1235446448

I got the car road ready in time for this past summer and made it out to a few Cruise the Crest runs

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/06/PICT1070-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/06/PICT1071-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/06/PICT1052-1.jpg

I planned to start for the motor swap during the winter and get the car running then take it apart for paint during the spring.

I sourced an LS1 motor and 4L60, no accessories. Actually I bought the motor along with two 55 Big Back Windows, the frame of a 57 Chevy already converted to rack & pinion and disc all as a package. I sold the frame and one of the trucks for just about what I paid for the whole lot.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/949-1.jpg?t=1235448411

Some will say I am crazy but I traded the LS1 for a complete LQ4/4l80e. maybe I am crazy but I figured for a few extra cubic inches, a lot less miles, complete wire harness and pcm, I could live with an extra 75bls.

I know you experts will be able to see that is a 4L60e and you pros' will be able to see that is a 5.3L, but I didn't take a photo of the completed 6.0L so this will just have to do.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/IMG_0950-1.jpg?t=1235448602

I got to work on the 6.0L striping the harness and intake. I sourced an LS6 intake and T56 and vwalla..

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/IMG_1196-1.jpg?t=1235448931

So you know that meant it was time to pull that old (new) 350/350. I decided to clean up the firewall and paint everything. Call me crazy again but I plan to pull the motor, fill the firewall and paint the engine compartment when the car gets painted.

I needed proof I was actually working...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/IMG_1238-1.jpg?t=1235449152

So after a couple weekends of prep I was ready to drop the new motor in place. For all you said truck accessories wont clear the hood here is proof you are wrong! I know some of you guys hate the truck accessories, I may even change them at some point but they really don't bother me. I have a few issues to sort out but it looks like it will work.

I have to give thanks again to Carter Hickman for his rendering!

This is how I plan to finish the car. I just hope it will be sooner than later. If all goes as planned... never mind I don't want to jinks it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/finishedrendering-1.jpg?t=1235537907

That rending is soooooo sweet it almost makes me not feel bad about all the setbacks. Look at that rendering, you can even see a reflections off the wet pavement.
Anyone contemplating the look of their finished ride should give Carter a call.

So a little update. I have been moving along on the swap, slow but moving, and I got to the point of installing the headers. After coming to grips with having to take a hammer to brand new coated headers I got them to fit. For some background, I used engine plates that set the motor back about 1 1/2 inches. There is about 1/4" or less clearance from the head to the firewall but it does clear. No issues in the tunnel and the T56 slid in like it was ment to. The only issue so far with the setback is the header tube which goes across the steering box. I flattened a spot on the header and filed down one spot on the steering box and it fits. No photo unfortunately.

The other issue is I discovered the hard way a broken bolt in the last hole next to the firewall. Not much room to work. It would have been no problem out of the car but in the car is a whole other issue.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/IMG_1378-1.jpg?t=1235538402
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/IMG_1382-1.jpg?t=1235538422
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/IMG_13671-1.jpg?t=1235538452

So as you can see I tried drilling the bolt and using an easy-out. The easy out broke off in the hole! Now I have to drill it too.

So I pulled the steering column to get better access and grabed an angled drill. After an hour, a few drill bits and a few choice words all I have is about 1/16" knick in the bolt. I'm giving up for the night!

Today was a perfect California winter day (can't believe it's still winter). So i decided to try and get that broken bolt and easy-out out.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1390-1.jpg?t=1235875700

No luck on the bolt! I am going to try a mig a bolt on to it tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Since I couldn't finish intalling the headers and didn't feel like finishing up the rest of the wiring i decided to mock up my hydroboost. After some advice I got it mocked up the way I want it. It doesn't look good in the photo but remember it's just mock up. I pulled it all apart and painted my brakets. I'll take another photo once I get the headers and the hydro permanently mounted.

Another nice So Cal day, so you know i had to get something done! I'm still stuck with that stupid broken header bolt and waiting for some help from Todd. Since Todd is sick in bed i told him I would update my progress (in hopes of giving him more reason to get well).

I actually finished this the other day but here is my hydroboost all set up and ready to go. I had to make the rod work with the original attachment to the pedal. After measuring, test fitting, measuring, test fitting, a few choice words... it seems to fit nicely. I didnt't take a photo but there is a grommet that fits perfectly in the opening.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1417-1.jpg?t=1236478108
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1412-1.jpg?t=1236478316

I turned my attention to mocking up the raditor. I used factory LS1 radiator and electric fans. I used a block of aluminum and cut it to size to make the mounting tabs, drilled a hole through them and they attach to factory holes on the radiator core.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1402-1.jpg?t=1236478504

I will use those mounting blocks to attach an aluminum cover I made to clean up the radiator and hold the fans in place.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1401-1.jpg?t=1236478700
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1405-1.jpg?t=1236478784

As you can see in the photo above i ran cooling lines to an engine oil cooler. This was a pain to get the lines run not touching the header. It also cost way more than I figured it would. AN fittings and braded hoses simply cost too much! Anyway I just hope it cools as well as it looks.

I have discovered a new love, aluminum. Man you can make all kinds of things with this stuff. I have been looking for the mount for my pcm since i got the motor. I even made a trip to pick a part with no luck finding the stupid mount, so i decided to make one

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1395-1.jpg?t=1236479488
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1396-1.jpg?t=1236479541

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1400-1.jpg?t=1236479585
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1399-1.jpg?t=1236479607

The mount is bolted on the bottom and one more in the center. I couldn't believe it but it fits the pcm so tightly that it actually snaps in place on three corners. one allen bolt holds a a tab at the forth corner.

I know my build looks a little rough, but remember the plan is to take the whole car apart in a few months for paint. I want to get everything working the way i want it now.

TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY. THANK YOU TODD!!!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1432-1.jpg?t=1237177283

That's Todd and his life saving welder. Man I need a welder! Todd came over to save me from myself and help get that broken bolt out the head. The plan was to use a flat washer taped to the head and weld through the hole onto the bolt, then weld a nut onto the washer. It didn't sound right the first time I read about this method but after thinking about it, it begins to make sense.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/IMG_1440-1.jpg?t=1237177650

that's the broken bolt!

So we moved on... If you were paying attention to the thread I am using an LQ4 with all the truck accessories, except for the water pump. Since I swaped to an LS6 intake I had to swap water pumps as well. The accessories sit further away from the motor than vettes and camaros requiring the pulley on the water pump to be pulled forward about 1/2" in an effort to line up with the other accessories. Thanks again to Todd, he welded a nut to the pulley and I cranked a bolt through the nut until we got it to line up properly.

After much time and effort I was able to get the car fired up. I did have one minor electrical issue (didn't have my fuel pump connected) and a few minor fuel leaks around the fuel rail connections but that (THANK GOD) was about it! It fired right up! The power steering pump squealed like a pig but quieted down after i topped it off with fluid.

I was hoping to have a video clip and a drive story by now, but i realized i ruined an injector o-ring so i am dead until the new one arrives. I have to thank Fuel Injection Connection (FIC). I called them to ask about buying a couple injector o-rings and they told me no problem give me your address, and don't worry about it. I know the cost isn't that significant, but free stuff from a company i have never done business with is great.

I'm trying to figure out why my gas guage reads full when there is only 5-6 gal. of gas in it. The sending unit reads 30 ohms but the guage reads full. Any suggestions? I'm calling Auto Meter tomorrow.

I had a coversation with Auto Meter and haven't had a chance to look at the issue since. I will figure it out over the next couple days.

GOOD NEWS is I got a chance to drive the car this weekend. I got a 4 hour window on Saturday to sort out last minute items. I got my girl to help bleed the brakes (while reading a magazine...), discovered and fixed a leak between the steel fuel line and tube to AN fitting, filled the trans with fuild, reinstalled the shifter and took it out for a spin. After i made it back home I took my girl out for a spin, well really just down the street.

I tell you, even with 2.73 gears in the rear there is enough power to break the tire loose with little to no effort! Since the clutch is new I was very easy with it and the tune is terrible. The car wants to stall when under too much load. Plan is to get a real exhaust this weekend and take it to the tuner.

I guess I should put the hood on first. I will take a quick video this weekend and post it.

I had Speartech rework the harness for me. I had to rework the reworked harness after I got it in order to lay out the wires the way I wanted them. Overall I think he did a good job.

I looked at my guage again and ground wire. I think i don't know how to read my meter because it doesn't say squat. I think I will call my tech buddy over to bring his real meter.

At least my short shifter came in. After pounding on it to try to put a little bend in it so the shifter wouldn't point straight up when in 1,3,5 gears, I installed it. It feels more confident and eliminates the slop from the factory rubber bushing.

I still plan to take a video and new photos this comming weekend. Last weekend was my birthday and I had very little time for work much less photos and videos.

Let me remember where I left off..

After a couple of runs up and down the street I decided I had enough and would wait to get the exhaust together so I could hear what it is supposed to sound like.

This is what i patched together so I could fire up the car and drive it to the muffer shop.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/04/IMG_1483-1.jpg?t=1239688383

Yeah I know it doesn't look so go. Those flowmasters dumping under the car where enough to wake the neighbors from a comma.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/04/IMG_1482-1.jpg?t=1239688628

I decided to go with magnaflow and run it all the way to the rear.

here is where I explained how to dump the exhaust. I wish he put the tips about 1" lower. you can't even see the exhaust the way it was finished. Oh well at least it sounds good now.

After the exhaust was finished i went directly to the dyno shop for a tune. With so much anticipation i was sadly let down.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/04/IMG_1750-1.jpg?t=1239688886

My injectors were not acting right. Joe the tuner, told me he thought the injectors may have sat for a while and were gummed up or something. The car ran super rich at idle and would lean way out when you get on it. So after about two hours on the dyno we decided we were wasting time. Joe suggested i get a new set of injectors and start over.

Oh yeah, this was monday afternoon 4/6/09. My girl and i had a flight leaving that evening for Hawaii.

F.I.C. to the rescue again! On Tuesday (from the big island...) I placed a call to John at F.I.C. and told him my situation, he set me up with a brand new set of injectors and gave me credit for my cores (speaking of which I have to mail tomorrow). So when I returned home this morning my injectors were waiting for me.

So after my girl when to work, I swapped injectors and headed back to the dyno.

Before I left town i decided to do something with that hole in the counsole. I took yet another piece of aluminum and cut to size, polished the inner edge and painted the outer edge.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/04/IMG_1479-1.jpg?t=1239688790

Here is a more finished shot

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/04/IMG_1491-1.jpg?t=1239689495

I will get to the dyno results tomorrow. I have been up for some ungodly amount of hours now.

loved reading it. I have a 69 with an LT1 that i am building in my garage as well. Totally wish that i had your 6.0L though. I really wanted an LQ9! but finances... you know how it goes.

It's comforting to know I'm not the only one that encounters numerous problems in my builds. It seems any time I go to the garage to fix something that should take and hour, I find myself fixing 4 things @ 1 hour per item. I just went through last night. These old cars are so much fun!
Looking good. I really enjoy someone like me dropping in the LS motor & trans. I'm going to stay tuned.

Sorry I failed to deliver on my promise to update yesterday but Uncle Sam required my attention.

So anyway back to the important stuff... I swapped in my new injectors and headed to the dyno. I need to remind you, I have a completely stock LQ4. The only alteration to the motor is a swap of the intake to an LS6 intake and LS6 injectors. Other than this the motor is stock. I know you some of you guys are running Big Blocks, super chargers, turbos, LS strokers, high dollar aluminum block LS2, LS3's and the allusive (for anyone wanting to spend less than $13K) LS7! That is great and I will grab the first LS7 i can get my hands on for what I have invested in my motor.

Speaking of which, I originally tried to keep track of how much I have invested. Then i got intimidated at the numbers and decided not to keep track. Ultimately I thought about it, after selling this, trading that, swaping the other thing... I think at the end of the day I am into it for $3,000 or less. That is not the total outlay, just after selling off the old motor and 4L80.

OK on to the dyno. After about an hour and a half of correcting all the air/fuel ratios, timing and whatever else he did, he got in a good pull. He only ran the dyno pull to 5,200 rpm's. The horsepower never fell off with a nice diagonal line heading up and to the right. The torq comes on strong and has a great arc between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm's.

The best numbers were 348hp and torq of 370 ft/lbs. You can see the pull below. Unfortunately I didn't get a good shot of the results

good numbers for a pretty much stock motor. What size tires are you running? How does the handling compare to what it was before?

aray327
04-16-2009, 07:05 AM
I forgot to include a reminder that I am still running a 2.73 rear gear with 27" tall tires. I know the car is really under geared. I can't even use 6th gear yet. On the freeway at 80mph I am turning 1,800 rmp's in 5th. sometimes i forget to even shift into 5th at slower speeds.

As far as handling I can't really say yet. The most time I have spend driving so far has been to and from the dyno. I will say I expect any change to be positive. The engine sits back further and even slightly lower than before, which typically improve handling. I'm planning to "cruise the crest" this weekend. so if my girl doesn't come with me I will get a decent idea of what handling improvements were generated.

I didn't start my swap to put down huge numbers. I contemplated a head and cam swap to get to the 400+ range, but I have to say if I don't get 400+ I may never really mind. this swap has great torq in the right places to make most people pretty happy. I took a friend for a ride who has a big block in his 69 camaro. After our short ride he said "now I understand why people are using this motor, I may have to get one...". His camaro is no slouch! He's running a 460ci big block with a mild cam. So I guess i should be happy with mine.

Now I have to address all those other little things like why my gas gauge still doesn't work and why my starter continues to spin after I let the key go. I thought I fixed the starter issue the other day when I replaced my f@^d starter rely i used to relocate the battery to the trunk. I discovered it isn't the rely, now I think it is that module on the column. I guess these things are what the weekends are for.

Finally, I have started getting more paint bids. Seems like $5,000-$10,000 is the range. I plan to take the whole car apart hopefully at the end of summer and send it out for paint. Funny thing is several people who have seen the swap have asked what I would charge to do one for them including two of the paint shop guys. One said I have a 62 and a 64 impala and a truck i want you to do the drivetrain for me. Another guy offered to trade me paint for a swap in his 69 TA. Just makes you think, hmmmmm.....

You have a run on problem with the starter if you are not using a seperate wire to trigger the starter. Those running Ford relays or something similar can get this. IIRC the solution is either a wiring change or use a relay with a diode.

Oh and BTW, dig the build... Very much what I'd like to do.

buy someones used cam off LS1tech. Guys are always swaping them out looking for 3 more HP so they can get in line and brag. Should be able to pick up 30-40 RWHP pretty easy. The 347 I built made 407 RWHP through and 4500 stalled TH400 and 3.73 12bolt. Thats a basicly stock build with one guys used ported stock heads and and another guys used cam. Its insane the power those motors can make.

I sourced an LS6 intake and T56 and vwalla..

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/IMG_1189-1.jpg?t=1235448898
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/02/IMG_1196-1.jpg?t=1235448931

So you know that meant it was time to pull that old (new) 350/350. I decided to clean up the firewall and paint everything. Call me crazy again but I plan to pull the motor, fill the firewall and paint the engine compartment when the car gets painted.

The magazine shot was from the last event i participated in, what luck?

I have been trying to nail down a painter for nearly a year now. I thought i had someone lined up, spent a big chunk of my bonus last year on parts (including the hood) and what do you know... my painter flaked!

Then i found a new painter, lined up a start date and what do you know, this one flaked also!!

Finally i got a referral and whet to check him out. I drove up and saw a new compact something or another and thought i must be at the wrong shop. I figured since i was there i would check it out anyway. I walk past the gate and see another 69 Camaro rag, full rotisserie job, a 70 Camaro full rotisserie, 62 Impalla rag, two 65 mustangs (the nicest one is the owners), 55 Ford big back window and few other cars. Man what a relief! Turns out like a lot of other shops they started doing some insurance jobs when things slowed down, but is love is restorations.

We talked business, agreed to a delivery date and the fun began.

Man can never leave well enough alone! That's what puts us on top of the Animal Kingdom, or just keeps us living paycheck to paycheck, i can't figure out which.

With the motor out of the car and sitting there looking all sad, i got a tug at my wallet and right foot and decided to do something about it.

First i figured i would do as much as i could with what i have and for little to no money (i still have to pay the balance to the painter remember...). So i am going with a very simplistic engine bay. Not much flash, sparkle or bling!

Good new / bad news

the rust will be fixed, but i ended up having to buy fender patch panels and passenger floor patch panels. Then i realized i will end up cutting a chunk out of the new floors when i install the frame connectors. Oh well, at least i will have good metal to weld to.

well the car is in primer now and was even set back on the subframe. I guess they needed the dolly rack thing for another car. Well next time it comes apart will be for the last time.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/02/IMG_3121-1.jpg?t=1298348643

Even got a coat of undercoating.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/02/IMG_3124-1.jpg?t=1298348642

Daylight through the floors wont last long.

This one is for you John. Here is the Ford truck they are finishing up. The photos really don't do the truck Justis. This thing is really nice when the sun hits the paint.

I decided it was time for an update. So the two floor sections were replaced, all the body work was completed and finally primed and blocked for paint.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/06/IMAG0111-1.jpg?t=1309145821

Then since i had to clean up the subframe i took it apart and welded the seam.

Since the paint and body work is taking so long i had enough time to get the subframe powder coated and put back together.

I had been thinking about how to beat Mary Pozzy and Bad Penny on the track and decided i would put my project on a diet too. Watch out Mary.... I couldn't figure out how to shed any more weight then this.

Oh man, i need some armoral on the tires. You can see the seats are even removable. Who needs DSE subframe connectors? 2x3's work great!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/06/IMAG0183-1.jpg?t=1309229326

Actually, i just needed to get the subframe and and rear end back to the body shop. It seemed like a good idea to make it a roller. Rest easy Mary and Steve (and everyone else for that matter) I will always be slower.

I am sad to see the patina gone... I may have missed it, but what color are you going with?

Shes looking good Aaron.

aray327
06-28-2011, 04:30 PM
Oh the patina... you know I really thought about clear coating the original paint but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. But man all the go fast parts I could have purchased with the cash, I could have maybe really given Mary a run for her money. Of course I would have had to ask Dave to drive.

But in the end at least I will have a nice looking ride, slow by today's pro-touring high standards but nice looking none the less.

I am really trying put the car together to look as close to the rendering as possible. So the color will be silver. I will get a few shots of the painted body up shortly.

aray327
07-05-2011, 08:07 PM
OK, as promised here are a few more updates. The body is completely painted and the subframe has been delivered for reassembly. The body is supposed to be back on the subframe by now. The inner finders core support and small pieces need to be painted still and then assembled. Sometime after its all together the stripe will go back on.

The shots are terrible as the sun was setting and I couldn't get in any better spot. The paint is a silver metallic and looks great in the sun.

After i wiped the grin off my face I realized the car wouldn't put itself back together so i figured i better get to work. I have actually been working on the car for about three weeks when i get the time. Funny how many things there are to do before you can work on what you want.

Out comes the Dynamat. After i ran out of Dynamat i started on the wiring. AAW is a great harness. The harness lays out as it should. The colors and connectors are factory and they give you a boat load of extra wire to run any way you please! It seems i jump around a bit and haven't yet completed one project, but every part depends on another part to be completed so i feel forced to jump around a bit. Some times i just work on whatever calls my name...

I fabbed up a bracket to hang my Vintage Air unit and not have to punch holes in my cleaned up firewall. Jumped back on the harness and finished everything from the firewall back. Also incorporated the computer harness into the AAW harness. Wired up my power windows. Installed the new rubber and all the trim, except the bumpers since i need to finish the hideaway doors... Anyway, pictures are worth a 1,000 words so here are a few thousand.

Thanks guys for the complements and encouragement! Today was one of those days that i really need a push to keep going. I wasted about 1 1/2 hrs trying to solder one wire. Sounds pretty stupid, and it was!

Anyway, too many things going on to really focus on the car the way i would like. This week i didn't make much progress. Still wrapping up details with the harness. Wired in the DSE headlight control and incorporated it into the factory bulkhead and harness (almost done).

I also installed my new door lock actuators. Since that option wasn't checked on the original build sheet, along with the no check next to power windows... i don't know how GM would have installed them but here is how i made them work.

After a few minutes pondering, i figured the best way would be to weld a tap onto the factory rod and connect the actuator rod to it. So i cut up flat stock, drill 1/8" hole for the actuator rod and 1/4" hole for the factory rod, slid the tab onto the factory rod and hit it with a couple good tacks. Repeated for the other side and presto!

I guess it's time for an update!

Finished the wiring, except for RS backup lights.
Finished AC lines. Spent three weeks searching for someone local to make a hardline for me. Finally decided to call Vintage Air. A few days later, installed.
Spent weeks trying to get those headlight doors to align. After reaming the holes, countless removing and reinstalling and yelling at the dogs (no one else cared) I finally got them mounted.
Hooked up the DSE motors, turned on the switch, one door opened, one door closed. That was funny! Swapped a couple wires and they worked as designed.

Started to mock up the frame connectors. Haven't cut anything yet. Wanted to measure for square subframe install. Didn't get time, the glass guy arrived.

Do what works for you. I had the same cost issues as you. If you notice I have tried to save money whenever I could. CPP brakes have worked fine for me. I have been on the track and participated in a few friendly competitions and they seem to break well. I run a hydraboost, which by the way was sourced from a truck and I made the bracket. CPP may not give you bragging rights but they work.

However I do think you can put together vette brakes for nearly the same price.

I got a little more done this week. I finished routing all the AC and heater lines through the inner finder. Lines run through the old heater hole, then made a block-off plate to seal the rest of the opening. Used the original vent area to house my front speakers.

I will take finished photos of the speakers later. The driver side is tight but the original panel is perfect because there is no big hole in it like the passenger side fresh air vent.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/IMAG0347-1.jpg

Enough fun, back to real progress. Decided to tackle the frame connectors. Got the car back up on blocks and stands. Dropped plumb lines as suggested by DSE. Measured a couple times and only found about 1/8" difference from side to side. Figured that was within tolerance. Then came the cutting wheel. What a weird feeling cutting up a freshly painted car. Turned out to be pretty fun! I didn't realize it would be difficult to make a straight cut on a non flat surface. I hope to have them finished by the weekend. Anyway here is the eye candy.

Need some advice. The intake is tucked in the inner finder. Do you think it will get enough air flow? I originally had it right off the TB. I know the air wasn't cold but it was plenty. The intake tube looks aggressive but do you think the location will be sufficient? Remember i am using the RS grill which has no open grill area on the outer side of the headlights.

I have seen where people have pointed the air-filter straight down through the inner fender and others simply make a large opening there and run mesh to stop the bugs getting up into the filter.

I can't believe it's been a month since i posted! Well time fly's when you're having fun, and when you aren't. I'm trying to remember why i haven't posted and more importantly why my car isn't finished. Oh yeah, LIFE!!!

I thought i would have my car running by now. I'm sure you guys know that story. I planned to get my car fired up the weekend before SEMA but life goes on and other things come up. I'll only share the interesting things like my buddy needing some help getting his car together for SEMA. I agreed to give him a hand, turned out it was a hand, arm and leg. What i thought was going to be a few hours turned into a 15 hour day. He was asked to bring his TKV Superleggera to the Dynamat booth for display. Since the 'car' was more like a shop full of parts only weeks before he spent countless hours gettin' it done and needed a hand to get to the finish line. I was mainly tasked with the Dynamat install but apparently it takes a village to build a car in unrealistic deadlines. Here's a few photos.

The plywood was only for SEMA as we needed panels to display the Dynamat. Those will be replaced with carbon fiber and fiberglass when you guys place your build orders.

SEMA was a blast! Winning a Hotchkis gift certificate was sweeeet! And the Optima Challenge on Saturday was the icing on the cake!

My car is still up on blocks! I can't believe it. But i decided i would leave in the air until i got it fired up. That way i could check out everything, make sure there are no leaks, and i also needed to put fluid in the brake lines and bleed the air out. I almost got the car fired up last weekend. I only got 20psi of pressure at the fuel rail and my pump wouldn't work any more. So i dropped the tank, pulled the sending unit and checked it all out. Seems ironic to me that at SEMA my good buddy Carl 'Hollywood' Casanova was premiering his Vaporworks tank and pump design. I think it was some kind of fuel voodoo carry over from Vaporworks that caused my pump to commit suicide... my pump got Vaporworks envy. That's how it goes I guess.

I dropped the tank and replaced the pump. My buddy strongly suggested i fix my faulty sending unit at the same time, damn you. At least now i will know when i will run out of gas. Can you believe how difficult it is to find a sender locally?

not finished in this photo but its all together now.

I finished a bunch of little things, too many to remember. the notable things include getting the dash, power windows, carpet, head unit, etc put in the car. I made an auxiliary plug for my radio that i think is pretty cool.

Next i'm going to get a cigarette plug and install it in the counsel as well.

My sending unit is scheduled to arrive Saturday (damn turkey day). If everything goes well i will post photos of a running car Sunday or Monday.

Your car looks great in Silver! Great job on getting to have fun with it then take it down again for paint and added fetures. Should be a lot more fun with all those creature comforts when it is on the road.

Time for an update. As the title suggests i made some progress. I waited ever so patiently for FedEx to deliver my new sending unit and fuel gauge. I may have been next to last on the delivery schedule but it finally arrived. I pulled both units out of the box, tested the sender with my ohm gauge and it works; as it should. Then i hooked up the new gauge to the sender and it reads empty with the arm down and full with the arm up; as it should. After a couple of minutes of slowing moving the arm up and down i no longer get a reading on the brand new fuel gauge! I pull the ohm meter out again and tested the sender. Now i'm getting some weird ohm readings. I got so irritated with again not having an operable sender and gauge i decided to just put the tank back in the car and deal with it later.

I plumbed the lines, plugged in fuel pump and powered it to check for pressure; 60psi on the rails! Turned the key once and not much, turned the key twice and it sputtered. Turned the key a third time... you know what they say. It fired up!!!! After a couple seconds it smoothed out and started to sound like something. I walked around the front end checking things out then looked inside the car at the gauges, ZERO oil pressure. I immediately shut it down. Started thinking and checking things out. Called my buddy Todd and began to trouble shoot. Figured i would pull out an old mechanical gauge and turn the motor over to see what it reads, only one problem. No way to connect the 1/8 tube. Called it a day. The next morning i went to church, really. After church stopped at the parts store for 1/8 tube and connectors. Got home hooked it all up, 25psi from the starter. Todd came by, we checked everything and decided to leave the mechanical gauge in and fire it again. Fired up, no strange sounds, 40psi!!! I'm a happy camper.

The video isn't the initial fire up. It's actually the next day. The sound is terrible too. It doesn't do the actual sounds justice but at least you can see it.

While writing the post i think i just figured out my issue with my oil pressure gauge. I will fix it tomorrow. I needed to take the day off and clean, cook and organize my neglected house.

Before my sending unit came in I installed my stereo.

After we got the car running Todd and I finished installing the belts and seats. I was determined to drive.
51804

I got the car back on the ground, then found out i had no brakes and no power steering. I figured i would skip driving it. after wrestling the car over to the correct side of the garage i had enough time to figure i likely needed more power steering fluid. Guess what, I did. I have lots of bugs to work out and figured i would sort them out before trying to drive it, but here are some shots.

I think i lowered it too much. After the suspension settled a bit, the pan is about a fist off the ground, approx. 3 1/2". Fortunately it isn't below the cross member, but it's too low too. I love the way it looks, but i think i will have to bring it up.

Honestly, i think i was just as excited to finally have a two car garage again!

Aaron, if you don't mind...how much did you spend on the original car??

I was going to PM you, but I read your post and realize your question is innocent and honest. Then I figured someone else may be looking to start a project and want to know what to expect. The short answer is $13,000.

The better answer is, I purchased the car when everything was ridiculously high. The car was all there and all original, paint interior trim, etc. It had a new 350/350 with no miles. No major rust or body damage. For the cost of a wet sand and buff, front glass and a few odds and ends I could have driven it the way it was. I actually did for a while.. then I decided I wanted to stop the car. Also I sold a 65 mustang for $9,000 and a 55 Chevy delivery for $6,000 in prep for buying. Minus my costs in those two cars and I'm into the Camaro for a respectable amount. I think today my starting cost could be around $8,000 or so, for the same car.
