MODS - I cleared this with Larry, he said it was cool to post here, but feel free to move if in the wrong spot. Thanks!

As you can imagine, the economic situation is really crushing charitable donations, so the crew at Finish Line Performance is raffling off their 540 cube, 6-speed '71 Chevelle shop car to raise money for 4 different charities including The H Foundation, Junior Diabetes, The Heart Foundation, and The Kidney Foundation. There are only 1971 tickets issued, and $150 will buy 3, so the odds of winning are pretty good, and you get to specify which charity your proceeds will go to. The FLP crew are really good guys, so we elected to help them spread the word.

Man, if they'd just add raffles like that to the stimulus bill instead of taxes, we'd have the cash we need in no time.

Do you have to be present at the open house to claim prize? (I will not be attending.)
This is for a great cause and someone could win a pretty decent starter car to start a pro-touring project. Thanks!!:1st:

I'll find out if you have to be present.. I don't think so off the top of my head. The car is killer, Baer brakes, 6-speed, tons of power, and it's very well done. You're right, it's a great cause.

I can't make the show but would jump in if I don't have to be present for the drawing, that is, if there's any tickets left.
Let us know Kevin.

Answers to Questions from the Board & Customers:

You do not need to be present to win.

We have capped the ticket sales to 1971.

We just started selling tickets in early Feb. and yes they are going fast.

We are already planning to do this in the fall too because of the outpouring of business sponsors, charities and customers positive feedback.

Yes, we have dyno numbers on the car.

You can purchase tickets on line or by calling the Naperville office directly

Here is a little more information....

At Finish Line Performance's 2009 open house, May 30th 2009 from 12 pm to 6 pm, we will be raffling off our 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS with a 540 cubic inch big block Chevy (built by Midwest Engine Tech), T-56 conversion with Centerforce dual friction clutch, BeCool radiator, Baer disc brake conversion, Torque Trust rims, etc.
Winner need not be present.
Proceeds will be going to The National Kidney Foundation, Junior Diabetes, The H-foundation, and The Heart Foundation. :)
One of the charities that we will be donating to is the National Kidney Foundation which has a special meaning to me. My mom had a kidney transplant 19 years ago (on March 10th) and I donated a kidney to my oldest brother 7 years ago (on March 20th). So they have been helpful to my family and now it is a chance to give back.
The winner of the Chevelle being announced at 6 pm.
Tickets are on sale.
1 ticket for $100.
3 tickets for $150.
Tickets can be purchased from our website or by phone.

Is the ticket purchase tax deductible since proceeds go to charity? Just wondering, I've already purchased 6 and my wife gave me an additional 3 for a birthday present. But, I was thinking about possibly purchasing some additional tickets if it's tax deductible.

Figured I've been working on my 71 Chevelle project on and off for 10 years, so my best chance of driving one may be winning a raffle. lol

Any sense of what the assessed value would be for tax purposes?

That's an awesome car, but it would be a bummer to take out a loan just to keep the car you won for free, or have to sell it.

I talked to a guy at a bike show a few years ago that had won a beautiful custom chopper in a sweepstakes for Miller Beer and was trying to sell it because the taxes were crazy high. I think the bike was supposed to be worth like $50,000+ though.
There was also a local teacher near me last year that won a Viper but couldn't keep it either because of the taxes, sucks.
I'm sure taxes won't be near that bad on this car and if I won I would hope to be able to pay it, but it would still be nice to have an idea of cost.

I wonder if you would pay sales tax or gift tax on something like this. Sales tax wouldn't be too bad but I forget what percentages they use for gift taxes.

I had to look into this pretty serious a couple years ago. I won the grand prize drawing at the TX Goodguys event which was a key to a 32 Ford Roadster. I had to wait until the next year to go to start it in California with 14 other grand prize winners from other events.

After looking in to it I was told I would have to treat its vavle as income. That car was valued at 75K so had I won I would have had to sell it top pay income taxes on 75K.

I would like to know too what the taxable value is and also are the donations paid through buying tickets considered tax deductible charity?

I was told the Illinois law (where FLP is located) states the winner will pay blue book value.. whatever blue book would be on a '71 Chevelle.

Man, you should be able to sell the rest of those tickets now.

Tax on $650 is pretty affordable, tax on the fair market value would be pretty steep.
