Bad Penny Logo - which fits the car better? [Archive]

It's funny how stuff works out. Years ago I had a vision for a logo for Penny. I talked with John McBride about it and we came up with a persona that leaned towards the Betty Page deal. But he's swampped and it never happened.

Every once in a while I would mention the idea to artists I work with. Well wouldn't you know it, I got two within a day of each other. Doh!

I like certain aspects of each design. One is more in tune with my vision, but the other one is pretty darn cool also.

So, Which do you think fits the car better?

The copper color deal is cool but this this would most likely be used in line art form I'm not sure it that part would translate.

I do know both are going in my garage :)

For some reason "In Torque We Trust" just doesn't have a ring to it. Maybe, "In Speed We Trust" or something else.

I would go with the chick but it needs to be in a copper color like the one Hermance did. Put a fine black outline around the perimeter to break it from the background of Penny's paint.

Swap the girl in the top rendering with the guy in the bottom rendering and be done with it. You will get lots of ideas on changing the wording / coloring / layout / ect...ect....don't torture yourself you know you like the girl (Penny) better than the guy and you like the penny background better than than the sign background. :)

When I told Casti of this he said "perfect, women shouldn't like Penny, but be willing to accept her. That way you know it's just edgy enough" lol

I like the "in torque we trust" since the two t's have a ring to it and because it's a play on what is on a real penny.

I think both artists did a great job. Wish I could draw something better than stick figures.

Also, if finding a penny is good luck, then finding a Bad penny would mean "Your luck has run out" and therefore, that should be your slogan!:idea: LOL, Just tossin ideas!

Do a web seach for "bad penny" and you will see why it fits the car so well.

Viewing the two renderings juxtaposed as they are, I will say that you should go with the girl. That rendering has a clean rim around the coin and if colored like the bottom rendering it will look awesome.
I too think you should loose the "In torque we trust" thing.

The bottom rendering just doesn't seem to connect with your car. It's just a damaged coin with an ugly dude on it. LOL. Penny is a beautiful car and the way it performs implies that it's bad to the bone... I see a "bad girl" in the top rendering!

The art work is awesome on both. Kudos to your friends.

Mine can work as line art too Steve, I just filled it in with color to look like a penny.

As far as the design, Steve mentioned to me that he liked the Betty Page/pin-up stuff. I love that stuff as well so I tried to relate it to what the car is all about while maintaining an unquestionable resemblance to a penny. Mostly, I looked at bomber art and comic books for inspiration. I thought it might be cool to try a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde approach so I just fed ol' Abe a healthy dose of steroids and made the penny look like it had been to hell and back.

The only comment I can offer regarding the pin up stuff is that I personally think it applies to other years of cars, it doesn't really say Muscle car, race-ready or modern tech to me. I think a mix of the two ideas might be cool too like a more sinister/exotic looking girl or something. I dunno, I guess I looked at the name as less of a girl's name and more of a bad penny.

Last time I looked there were 2 sides to every coin. I do believe you can use them both, that way there is heads and tails and it is obvious which side is which !!!!

Girl hands down. Maybe change the tag line thou to something to match the pic. Like "Breaking Hearts", "Your Mother warned you about girls like me" or like others have suggested "Get some" etc.

C'mon Steve, did you really have to ask that question? lol, The girl reminds me of the 50's - 60's era kinda like the movie where Suzzanne Sommers drove the white T'bird? I can't think of the name of that movie for anything right now. You know cruzin' the neighbor hood drive in etc. Besides I agree "Penny" just doesn't look right associated with a guy. I vote go with the girl on the colored penny.

I have the exact perfect picture, in my head, I know this would be a winner but I can't draw well enough and I can't find the picture of what I have in mind. It would be like a outline drawing of a girl with some serious attitude, looking side ways at you with moderate (not real big) boobs and a necklace with a "P" on it. I know you would like it I've just got to find a pic of what I'm talking about. I think the attitude would be the thing here. Just my thoughts, I'm going to try to find what I'm thinking about.

I really appriciate the work Ben, your artwork is killer and I will be using it with Penny, it's too cool not to.

Also, it's nice to see it the line format. I have an idea for laser engraving.

Of the two your the one that really nailed the font and look of the penny. But I did always have the vision of a pin-up girl.

The Angry Abe is well done. Again, thanks for the work and you'll be seeing Abe around.

I'm not saying to use those pics, only to give ideas of girls with attitude. I really like the picture of the girl on the first penny, but I think she needs to show more attitude like some of these girls. I still like the idea of the line art, or like the pen and ink drawings I use to see. The two drawings on the penny's are without a doubt some of the best drawings I've seen. They are kinda like the guys here that do the renderings. I mean those guys are great. I've done computer drawings for years, only they were mechanical drawings in 3-D. I did some renderings but only a tip of the iceberg compared to what I've seen here..Like I said not trying to push these drawings on anyone just an idea.

Not that your car needs a logo...here's my two cents: The cartoon version of Kim Basinger in Cool World (or the one that is already posted, dressed in black, with a whip, change the collor to copper...) would be my choice for bad.
