Cool! Drag Race High - cyber style!
Now we just need to find another competing school.

The real question is, are you gonna let all of them drive it at least once upon completion?:lurk:

I went to Charles Allen Prosser VocationL SchooL in New Albany, IN. I think there was one in Louisville,KY. I would say every student, in the US, should have a Vocational School nearby? I learned a lot, had a ton of fun, now it is my career, and has been for 20 years. The young people working, on this CamarO, will never forget this BuilD.

ToO CooL!

Just a little about my program. We are locted in south Alabama(Mobile) most of my students are 15 to 18 years old and in the 9th to 12th grade. We built the engine two years ago.It runs 6.80 in the 8th and 6.18 on spray.and I drive it to the track 30 miles away.We only intended to fix the rust on the car,but one thing led to another. We are planing to put 29x12.5s or 29x18.5s on the rear.we will move the frame rails in and have not decided if we are going with coil overs or leaf springs and cal trax bars.the boy you see weld is only 15 years old and is really talented.I am lucky to have good students in my class. They really are good kidsand enjoy learning.
My pocket book is going to limit things we do to the car but I still think it will be cool when they get finished.
Laine o They ask me every day will I let them drive it when its finished and all I am promising is a ride.

Great idea - and an excellent way to teach!

I remember I bought my '69 back in Grade 11 so I would have something to work on in automotive shop class. The knowledge I learned in that class you can't put a price on. The earlier you learn the things - the better.

Awesome Project Mr Tillman. I had a couple shop teachers just like you when I was in High School back in 1985.

PM me your schools address and I will send you a Billet Set of hood pins for the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Also, can i suggest that you put some Wood blocks under the car just in case it get's bumped off the jack stands. Seems to be a good group of kids working on the car and it's always good to have extra saftey measures in place.

something similar to these 2 x 4 stands in 4 spots under the car

Yes, we lost a very cool board member and to some guys on here he was a great friend. I believe it was last year....he was wrenching under his truck; which was sitting on jackstands. We all never want to here about something like that again. He was a young father, husband, and he is missed by many.

In pilot school they taught us to learn from others mistakes, because you will never live long enough to make the mistakes yourself. I believe it is also a good rule for every aspect of life.

Heres a link :look: to one of the sites threads to show you how to make your photos come out larger like the ones of the orange camaro (Dale ernhardt Jr.s) above. Its real easy, especially if I learned from it. It would make your thread more impressive to the parents. Just an idea. I'm sure your kids will know how to.

Thats a great project. With vocational programs being phased out its good to see kids have a constructive outlet. Its a disease that will stick with them through life once its in thier veins. This hobby will cost them a mint over a lifetime (and the skills will make them money as well) but its a love and an addiction I wouldnt have it any other way!

Here in alabama vocational schools are not phasing out. They are growing.
This camaro is just a small part of my program.Students are not allowed to work on it until their regular class assignments are complete. This week we just finished specialty tools. How to read micrometers.slide calipers.dept gauges.etc.The mechanics industry here is large. Most of my students after graduation attend UTI or Nashville Auto Diesel College.A few have even been accepted into the BMW school. Those who go straight into industry ususlly go to Peterbuilt .John Deere.Cat or Kubota.

Our door gaps are 1/4in .Should we keep working to get 3/16in or leave it alone?

syborg tt
03-16-2009, 09:46 AM
1/4" for a street car is more then acceptable.

Two68s
03-18-2009, 06:32 AM
I agree, 1/4" is good. You want to leave some of the character of 60's muscle cars, and part of that is gaps. I like door gaps, albeit straight ones.

I wish I had a program like this when I was in school. I'm a product of Jefferson Co. schools (Bham native) although we had shop class, we didn't get to build a '69 Camaro from the ground up!! I am enjoying this build and loving the pics. The quality of work looks great from the pics and the best part is the students are learning! When you finish the Camaro, you need to build a Ford and take them both to the track!!

I would go for the lower look. If possible. Maybe with the top of the wheel level with the top of the wheel well opening for starters. But that is some serious rubber to get in that far. My two cents.

That thing is looking great. My shop teacher was an awesome guy. Mr. Farley from Mesquite High. He let me build my dad's 73' Camaro there and hang all the metal and spray the paint. That was the best thing about school I can remember. I wish I had pursued and gone to UTI, WyoTech, etc... but I joined the Navy. Just remember that you have or will change someones life for the better. This is something that they will be able to carry on for the rest of their lives. They will always be that one step ahead of the average Joe and years after school will still have those little tips and tricks to fix things that they learned in your class. Seems like you have some talented kids there. Keep up the progress, looking good.

keeping the rear seat is not a problem but you will have to kind of build the car around it. Get the car set up back on the frame and build the tubs first get everything set in place and from there you can make the rear seat area and you will have to mod your rear seat and re wrap it. Not hard work just need to have the kids take thier time and plan everything out. one thing at a time so you get it right. measure and re measure so you only cut and weld once.

I will see if I can find some pics and post them up for you guys to look over. It will give you some ideas on where to go with everything.

Keep up the great work

First I would like to say thanks for taking the time and interest to walk us through our build. My class likes the way the trunk is done in the red 69 so I guess we will go in that direction.
My first question is with our frame rails being 36 inches apart outside to outside is that ok? Or do we need to move them.
What four bar system do you suggest ?You mentioned going ahead with the tubs.Do I buy the extra wide tubs fron dse or the racing tubs from art morrison?
Thanks

Tony,

I got your email asking my opinion on the ride height which directed me to your thread. Thank you. That was a very good move on your behalf. I just got through reading the entire thread and I really like what your doing. See our entire shop is under 23 Y/O (except one guy). Michael and Andrew were hanging around the shop all through high school and Jr high, and both started full time here on work release from school their senior year. Two more guys 22 and 23 Y/O are learning now and doing great. All 4 of these young guys are straight arrows, no drugs, no arrest, no real problems, great kids and I really contribute the hobby to that.

I ran this past Lisa and Michael, and we unanimously agree. You did not ask for anything, but Prodigy Customs wants to be a part of this and wants to help! We want you to contact us for parts you may need whatever it is. If it is of our manufacturer, you will get it free, period! Need a stainless bolt kit? it's on the way! If it is a product we distribute, COST! If we can use our leverage and I can get the manufacturer to chip in, we will pass that to you also!

I only have one suggestion! I think some of the kids that put in a extra ordinary effort, get grades, no trouble (you decide the parameters), should be able to make a soft pass in the car (turn it down a bit) and let them get the feel. And I want to come see the finished car at the track and meet them!

I want to thank you again for what your doing with these kids. In 1996 Michael and I (He 12 Y/O then) built our street drag car. I started racing with my 3 boys when they were 12, 15 and 16. Nicholas, my middle son, and Michael (when Michael turned 15) both raced the car. My oldest, did not race. One great thing about the racing, I knew where they were on Saturday night, they were at the track with me! And they were not racing on the street either! 12 years later, both Michael and Nick are great kids, hard workers, valued by those they work with, and I really think the entire car thing helped me control some of that in the teen years. Their older brother, was not interested in the car, the racing................. he is our problem child. So we really think what your doing is really great!

So any way we can help..................................

I can not thank Prodigy Customs enough, I did speak with Frank today.and he has some great ideas. We are going to raise the floor pan and frame rails and install a four bar setup and build our own tubs.
The students are real excited about prodigy getting involved. We spent a lot of the day trying to decide the direction we wanted to go.More race or street.and we decided more street.
Of course I had to keep reminding the kids that I was still going to be their teacher and would be giving them their grade, not Frank.LOL.
We will be posting a lot of pics and always enjoy, and listen to every ones ideas on this forum.so please keep giving us ideas.
Thanks

So more interesting news for you and the students.

Steve Rupp from Camaro Performers Magazine was in town with his wife vacationing. Lisa and I went to dinner with them. I told him about your project, that Prodigy Customs helping you out with some sponsorship. And he would love a picture or two and some text about what your doing for under construction! How cool would that be!

I am delivering 2 cars to Alabama and Louisiana in 10 days or so (soon as we finish) and will be close enough to do a little detour and swing by. I would like to stop in and say hey! If that is OK!

Awesome idea! I loved auto shop and metal shop when I was in high school. In fact I'm still playing with cars and I'm the GM of an Aerospace machine shop today. After many years of working a lot and not having the time I sent my '68 Camaro to Prodigy Customs to build. They did an awesome job and you won't go wrong listening to Frank and the gang. What I learned in school is still with me today. In fact I reached out to my old school to give back recently and I found out they killed both classes. What a shame.

I think this is great and I will follow along and see if I can help in some way. I have been lucky enough to meet a LOT of people in the industry since I started this site and may be able to help in some way. If nothing else I may have some parts laying around you might need. I will dig around my garage and see what I can find.

Way to go!

Even if you were getting free parts for your build, what's wrong with it? Your sharing this build (thant you and your students) are doing, if anyone wanted to give you parts it's their business! As everyone has said Frank is to be highly commended for his help, as is everyone else. If I could afford it, I would bundle up my Camaro, send it to Frank and be all the happier for it. I just don't have the money, but to be able to have a "Prodigy Customs" done car here in Arkansas would surely have it's bragging rights! I've seen a lot of posts where Frank has unselfeshly helped when there wasn't anything in it for him. That's why he is who he is.
but yeah, if someone wanted to give you something, just don't forget to say thank you...lol

Talked with Art morrison today. And the reason my shock mounts are above the frame rails is because I purchased the competition engineering frame rails which are good rails just not intended to be used with coil overs. My class thinks the car need to be lowered about 2 more inches. That means moving the upper shock mounts even higher up, and then building a raised cover in the trunk area.I have almost 5 inches of travel before the rails bottom out on the rearend.
opinions please?

syborg tt

I agree with the class the car should be a little lower.

But first you need to set up the front suspension to see where it is going to sit at ride height. It take a lot of work to get a car 6" from the ground. So verify that the front can be set low enough.

SO set up the front with everything you have and put the correct amount of weight in the engine bay, borrow some 45lbs plates from the gym if you have to.

Then move to the back of the car.

You have all of the right parts you just need to set the car up first.

Rule of thumb is to go in this order

Note:
These notes are assuming you are using a stock subframe

1. Front Suspension
a. determine desired ride height
1. Is it possible without extensive modifications
b. research the compannie's that offer parts
c. Order parts from one company ( don't mix and match )

2. Set Ride Height of Front suspension
a. Load front suspension ( add weight in your case )
b. check for clearence issue with inner fenders
c. verify that your wheels will fit and not rub
d. check turning radius
e. check control arms angles ( are they correct )

3. Rear Suspension
a. determine desired ride height
1. Is it possible without extensive modifications
b. research the compannie's that offer parts
c. verify that your wheels will fit and not rub

4. Chassis stiffening
a. Frame Connectors
1. under stock floor mount type
2. welded thru floor type

So for right now I would set up the front suspension and take some real measurements of the front rocker Pinch weld.

Let's say it's 8" at the front pinch weld.

Then move to the back of the car and set the car at 9". This will give the car some sag when you load it. Plus your most likely going to be using the middle lower shock mounting point. Which will allow you to raise th car up a little or lower it to match the front if it sags just a little.

At this point - you will now be able to make an informed decision as to how low the car can sit.

If you want the car lower then you need to go down another road and I would be more then willing to help you but I have typed way to much and I'm afraid that I may have lost you.

Or you can alway's call me

But the first thing I thought when you sent me pics was not much upsweep in the rails.

The Frame rails are an exact match of the factory floor. So getting the car on the ground may be a little more work. The good thing the floor can me modified to gain more clearence.

Also now is the time to center the wheel in the opening just makes sure you measure / measure and then measure so you have it correct.

My Auto class sucked we had a LT1 350 hugger orange72 camaro that gm donated in 73. A tree fell on it in 72 on the lot. in 92 the roof was still not fixed. My class started a fund raiser and scrap metal drive to buy some performance parts and to buy paint for the auto body class to fix the roof. We ended up with lots of money. The nexy years class painted it GULP pearl white and the school made them put V.I.C.A in large letters down the side. Roof was fixed with bondo alone. This makes me sad because I put lots of work into the scrap drive (Idea for you) I went to all the lawn mower repair places in 4 countys and got them to donate all their broke engines. I tore them all down and collected a ton of Aluminum and brass. Enough so that it took 3 8 foot bed loads to get it to the school and the scrap yard had to send out a few dumpsters to collect it. Anyway. Keep up the good work.

****EDIT**** Have to say the teachers Where cool as hell the school was not Frank Manely and Joe Lamatrice Where my teachers.

If you looking to make the car as quiet as new cars of today are then take a look at

www.cascadeaudio.com

Call them talk with them - They build each kit car specific.

Trust me when you shut the door you won't hear a thing in the outside world. Actually if you want to hear your engine you actually have to open the window and that's with a loud exhaust.

We sprayed the dash and under the hood today. We decided to spray the top of the wheel wells with 3m schutz to add a little texture and set it off from the firewall.(Wrong) The fire wall looks good but the gloss black on the wheel wells over the schutz looks like trash under the paint and not textured.Should we spray flat black over the gloss or just scrape it all off and start over?

It's been a while since my last post. We have been working on the car. We installed a new side window, carpet, rear seat, grab bar over the glove box. I have ordered the door panels, and a March style track setup. Frank at Prodigy cut me a super deal on a set of stainless works headers so we are waiting on them to come in. We were installing the new cowl hood this week and a student thought he had dropped a washer down the intake while removing the carb.(I am just glad he was honest enough to tell me) we tried a magnet and a boreascope with no luck. We pulled the heads and no washer! Better safe than sorry. Will be posting new pics soon. Our finish goal is still May 15.

I would've loved to had someone like you as my auto shop teacher in high school.
Me too, Mine didn't understand simple mechanics, much less anything like you guys are doing.

ie. We had an arguement one day in class about lifters and push rods in a SBC. Instructor argued that the lifter and pushrod were one piece (because that is how it looked in the exploded diagram in the book)......so I HAD to bring in a set so he could see my side of the arguement....LOL

John Wright
02-19-2010, 06:25 AM
Oh, another funny story...one day in class the Instructor let the guys change the oil and grease the teacher's cars....LOL, I chuckle everytime I think about it....anyway one kid and the Instructor let the oil out of one teacher's car and then proceeded to add 5 quarts and change the filter. before they started it up they cleaned the dip stick and stuck it to make sure they had the oil level right and low and behold the oil level was almost at the top of the stick.....they had let out the transmission fluid into the catch pan and then added 5 quarts on top of the 5 that were still in the engine....Bwhahaha!....I'm glad they checked it before they cranked it, or things it could have gotten real ugly....but you would think that they would have noticed the red color of the fluid that they were letting out or even the smell of the fluid would have given it away that they had the wrong drain plug.

Car looks absolutely beautiful man.
It's came along way, and I can honestly say, for kids thats some dang good work. I wouldn't hesitate letting one of them work on my tahoe.
I'm in a drafting class, but auto mechanics/auto body was my next choice in line.
I'm redoing the entire front end on my dads 84 gmc short wide c1500
We are also swapping out a 10 bolt with 3.42's for a 12 bolt with 4.10's with posi, and possible narrowing it an inch for wider tires :)
We are also installing a 3/4 drop kit, and doing a ploy-urethane master bushing kit top of everything else.
I would like to get a 4-link to run a coil-over setup, but funds are empty right now.
Then comes the difficult part, deciding the motor/transmission combo.
Keep up the good work guys.

Just out of curiosity what kinds of cars do your kids drive? They getting into the old stuff, newer ricers or what? Most of ours were mid 60's to early 70's since they were cheap.

I took Autoshop in 1976-1977, our shop teacher was ok but steered more to the career mechanic aspect instead of custom or hot rodding since back then there wasn't much to be made doing either of those. I was the engine guy, still my favorite part of a build.

Senior year our cars were: my 68 Firebird, an SS Chevelle, 351 Ranchero, Chevy II, Falcon Sprint and a few family sedans. Probably only had 8-10 students and not all had cars.
Nice to see you have some girls involved, we had two my senior year.

Keep the updates coming.
