Anyone else notice the line in the latest Car Craft? As I remember it went something likes...

"..and if you're going to run 19 and 20 wheels, the Pro Touring fashion police insist that impressive discs be present to back them up."

apparently to someone at Car Craft, big brakes are just for good looks.. :screwy:

One more reason not to read that magazine... 19/20's aren't my thing, but a better comment would have been that big brakes are manditory with the larger rims because of the inertia and the resulting increased stopping distance caused by them!

I don't disagree with needing big brakes to stop incredibly heavy 20" rims.

But be honest. Some people have big brakes for the track or "spirited" street driving. But most cross-drilled, slotted, etc aftermarket brakes are installed because they look good.

It isn't right, but it is the way it is.

I won't lie... Yes. That car mainly has larger brakes on there for the good looks. We didn't build that car for track days or spirited driving on a tight and twisty highway. We built that car to be driven (long and low!). We have other cars for those fun little days at the track. I have done 2 track days with one my Silver 69 Z/28 which is about 2 more than most people here. Not really dissing anyone but they would be a lot more fun if when we go out it's not just WRXs and S2000s. I would love to see days with many more Pro-Touring cars out on the track!

I like Car Craft but it's mostly a mag about cheaply built drag oriented cars. It sounds like that line about the "fashion police" was just sarcastic crack since they like to go straight in cheap, poorly painted old cars.

I think they may have been saying that if you are running big wheels it really looks stupid if you have the OE braking system, especially drums behind them.

Exactly. I think the others are just reading much more into that statement than intended.

Well, since nobody buys 20s for their functionality, I wouldn't expect them to "need" upgraded brakes much either.

I know I read right over that and didn't think about it at all... I was just excited to see how the photos turned out! I am bummed to see that print quality in most magazines has gone way down. Keith took some awesome photos and they just are'nt getting justice. Other than Rodders Journal I'm not sure if there are any quality prints being done anymore. I even hear that most magazines are printed over seas... True? Anyone know?
