View Full Version : Cool Idea. Privateer Garage.
Anyone into bikes? This is cool. This would probably translate to the car hobby also, but the space would obviously have to be much larger.

There are lots of car facilities like this popping up - where you can rent a bay & lift, tools, electricity, compressor, for like $10-20 / day. Paint booths for $30 - 40 / day, and helpers for like $15 / hr. I'll post a Craigs List ad I saw about it.
The military has had these facilities for a long time. When I was in it was called the hobby shop. There was one on almost every base. I thought it would be a great idea in the civilian world but never had the desire or cash to try to get one going. I spent many weekends wrenching on my 64 Impala so I could drive it to work the next week.

I have thought about doing this for awhile, but takes a lot of capital and a large facility to have the room for multiple cars/people

I was wondering about the liability.

Like shep said, I also know of these from the military. The auto hobby shop. I always wanted to start one up in the civilian world because it was so much of an asset while I was in, I knew one would do well.
The part that kept me from even pursuing starting one was the thought of the liability and what nightmares it would be. How do you get around a guy blowing his hand up with a torch or cutting fingers off using a tire changer. I'm in the mining profession now and as in all my previous jobs, starting with the Air Force, they have had strict safety and training programs, and that is what I always thought you would need in place and it would be way to cost prohibitive. I just figured the military was already responsible for your body and thats how they got away with it. But it seems there must be a loop hole in the civilian world, to protect you, since it sounds like they are starting to show up.
I think these shops are great and would hope one would come to my neighborhood.

I rarely use the auto hobby shop on my base. the guys that run it are tools and want to be up in my s*#t with everything I do.
I'm a mechanic anyway but these guys are lecturing me on how to safely pour oil into my engine. I just work on my stuff in our shop after work and on w/e. Better tools and lift anyway. Plus we have an alignment rack and Snap On Modis', they don't.
I imagine you could get around liability issues by having customers sign waivers. But the capital required to equip and stock the place would still be very high.

I've always wanted to have a shop like that too.

do you provide the tools, or does the customer bring their own?
i'd hate to try to keep track of a bunch of wrenches and screwdrivers in a situation like that.

In the military one I knew they provided the tools. But since you were in the military and covered by there disciplin(sp) program, you had plenty good reasons to keep good track of the tools. Private world would be a nightmare.
Fortunately we had good people running ours so I enjoyed being there. We had to check out the tools. They were inventoried when the went out and again when they were returned if something was missing you paid to replace it. If you broke something they ran out to sears and replaced it all tools were craftsman and the sears was around the corner from the base so that was not a big deal. In the civilian world it would require a credit card to get in and run a tab on it like at the bar. That would be the only way to ensure that lost or stolen tools were paid for before the patron left.

They had a few shops out here in the bay area like that. One was closed when a member got staff infection from an injury there. Insurance is the big problem.

That was one of my first thoughts to. But at that one I feel the owner would just remove a hand or finger if you lost (stole) a tool. LOL

Chanhassen, eh?
try working on a rusty old Chevelle or Camaro in your "car condo" and see how fast the neighbors start complaining about your rusty American junk making their Italian and German super cars somehow worth less money..
