Ok I am pretty new to this forum. Just wondering what is the widest wheel/tire combo for the rear I can run on a stock "NOT TUBBED" 1968 firebird.

THANK YOU!

First Off welcom to the forum- this is one of the best out here with alot of great people. with stock wheel wells you are kind of limited to probably no bigger than 17x9.5 with a 275/40/17 on the rear. please check out this thread for some good info 67-68 have the same wheelwell areas but keep in mind on the back spacing that the Firebird uses a 1" wider rear than the same camaro (widetrac pontiac) the car in this thread is a camaro BTW http://http://www.geocities.com/casanoc/

hope this helps you out and may want to make measurements carefully as it hard to return wheels if ordered incorrectly. Good luck

Also, it's always a good idea to check how centered your rear axle is under the car if you're going to be trying to squeeze the most rubber and wheel under there. An 1/8" to 1/4" one way or the other is fairly common and can make a difference when things are tight.

You can run the 275/40/17 but you should check your rear-end side to side and also roll the fenders as a precaution--i had tire rubbing on one side under spirited driving.

Have fun!

Just going to be a Parrot here and repeat what everyone else said. A 9.5" rim and a 275 is safe on 95% of the cars out there unless something funky has been done the the tubs or the quarters. No matter what size the wheel (16, 17, 18,19, 20), try to keep the overall height under 27, 27 1/2 at most. and shorter then 25 1/2" looks to small. 26 1/2" is pretty much the sweet spot.

what would you put under a 69 that has been mini tub'd only over to the frame rail but the quarters have been opened up 2"(it almost got full tubbs!)?
