View Full Version : EVS Motors "Culture Shock Camaro" on Hot Rod Magazine

Just want to share with you guys that our "Culture Shock" Camaro will be in the April issue of Hot Rod magazine. The oldest and one of the most widely circulated magazines (more than Road & Track, Motor Trend or Automobile Magazine from what I was told).
We are glad to be in the magazine, even though we were already told it would be a biased view of it, due to the reader base that is pretty conventional. They don't want to lose readers if they favor the crazy idea of our car. lol
Look out for it on newsstands next month!

Yes it is. It actually looks like it was taken in a shop. The big blue thing in the background looks like a lift.
As for the car, I have no issues with any kind of hybrids. I have done LSx RX7 swaps and they are cool. One of my buddies put a 2JZ in a second gen RX7 and he will be running low 9s this year on a stock short block. Another buddy has a small block Chevy in his Mustang that runs 9s. The Supra is not a lightweight car and they can be made to run, fast and quick. SW showed that recently. For people that get their panties up in a bind over ripping the soul out of a car (rotards) or ruining classic American iron, get a grip. It is just a car. A collection of steel, aluminum, plastic, and rubber.
Congratulations on the Hot Rod feature!

That is great news!
I personally think that this car and concept is great. I wish that Hot Rod would own some of the controversy that it occasionaly creates. I know that they say that they only report the trends- not make them, however by that proclimation, you would think that they would pretend to be more impartial. They tend to talk about "dare to be different" but when there is a "different" car featured, they have to be apologetic to not upset the applecart that is their market.
I can make my own decisions about what car is "cool" to me.
The car modification hobby itself is kind of antisocial. "Normal" people have no desire to bomb around 800hp turbocharged cars that have the same visual effect as a barfight in progress. What happens when we start editing our own community for overly outrageous or strange ideas? We become the squares.
I am naturally defiant, so I love the thought of popping the hood on that '68 and seeing car guys scoff, shake their heads or get riled up at the thought of a "dammed rice rocket" motor in a classic. Especially one as good looking, classy and fast as this.
This is great press for you guys. Keep up the good work.

Nick,
Well said. One thing to note. The car is definitely good looking and classy, but is yet to be proven it is fast. I think the folks at EVS need to take it to some events and show what it can do.

Andrew thanks for the kind words. Yes, it has been proven on the streets and witnessed by many. It has run with sport bikes (yes Sport Bikes; CBRs, R6s, etc) and taken them (4-5 of them), I don't think this is something 90% of other cars can do. I believe some of the guys who witnessed the incident is on the forum. Unfortunately there was no video of this! The Culture Shock Camaro even on the lowest setting of boost has easily pulled on the Car of The Year, GTR. There is a video of this on youtube. The GTR puts out about 530HP+.
Here is the video. Note really slow shifting and short shifting. The GT-R has seamless shifts!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_uXM2WzTSA&feature=channel_page&fmt=22
It was built as a street bruiser and will continue to do that. It is something that can be driven everyday and driven for performance.
Here are some more pics of it. I thank everyone for their support and please buy the magazine when you see it! ;)
Keep in mind we are not anti-V8, we have been doing Custom Camaros with V8s since 2003. This was just a controversial project we dared to take on.

Yup, thats exactly it. I say that because we do sell them like that. A lot of our customers prefer that than it saying Corvette on a Camaro. They work like a charm.

I think it was as fair a write-up as you'll see from a pretty traditional magazine like HRM. HOWEVER, the true nature of hotrodding is going against the grain with a by-any-means-necessary approach to speed & power. So job well done.
Just change the exhaust tips...

I have to say I really like this car. Its so different and I think you did an excellent job. You have it harder than me when it comes to critizism for the engine you installed. I say no bumper. Also that engine bay is so clean and like art work but you need to loose the ziptie on the fuse. Not trying to bust on you either its just your car is too nice to have that! The tips are ok although something more discreet might be even better.

Speaking of adrenaline here is a quick video clip. Short shifting and granny shifting involved, tires were spinning like crazy in all the gears. Didn't have enough room to keep going safely.
Culture Shock Camaro was well under the speed limit and this was done in an area in Mexico.

It is a Canon 5D Mark II. Probably the most versatile SLR you can buy! Takes the best pictures and videos at 1080P. But its definitely not cheap. The body alone is $2700 plus Lenses.

Yea it is definitely worth upgrading! With the old 5D the ISO was only usable up to 1600 I believe, with the Mark II the ISO is usable up to 5000 with minimal noise. Plus 1080P video capture is a big bonus. But the setback is that a 12-14 minute video takes about 4gigs!

I won't race one of my own cars, who does that. Let's see you run your Camaro against a 2009 GT-R first from 40-130mph and see how well you do. Document it on video and than come back to hate on this car. Seems like you have issues with my car why don't you bring your Camaro down to Texas during the Texas Mile Event next month and you can see first hand. Just because you haven't seen this car perform for yourself does not mean nobody else has. I invite you to bring your Camaro down to Texas for the TX2K9 Events or even the Texas Mile Event and you can see this car run first hand. Everyone asks me to take it to the drag strip; the only reason I won't is because I'm not interested in putting slicks on my car nor am I even a drag racer so whats the point. Street tires won't give me enough grip with this amount of power. I'm not going to be good at launching it nor do I care to abuse the drivetrain from harsh launches just to prove a point. This is built as a street car and will be driven as a street car, not a drag car. Some come see the car for yourself if you have any doubts. People who actually seen the car or had seat time don't question it. A sanctioned event such as the Autorama and International Show Car Association awarded this car First Place Best Pro-Touring Muscle Car and People's Choice Pick of The Show, quite obvious they know this car isn't just talk and hype. If you don't like the car which it appears so in every reply you have posted about this car just look elsewhere, go annoy someone else that hasn't posted drag times on this forum. There are plenty of posts such as this but I don't see you questioning them! Have a nice day.

*sigh* Oh well, I've seen worse things done to muscle cars. Better than going to the crusher, or ending up on cinder blocks in front of Bubba's trailer.
I guess I'm a "purist". Let the hate mail begin...

In regards to Hate Mail, I guess your going to have to pick up the next couple issues of Hot Rod magazine to find out! ;)

I think it's hilarious how people are hating on this car, but it's perfectly fine to put a Chevy engine in a '34 Ford.
Who cares about brand? This car is bad ass.

this thing is beautiful, love everything about it, and the pics with it blacked out front and black door handles look tough!

Totally agree. However, the "problem" with this car is that it is a Toyota motor and not an American motor. Look at how much stink people had over Toyota joining NASCAR. Sure you'd have some people talk about rules and what not but the real issue was that Toyota is a Japanese company and this car and NASCAR is American. Some people are just bigoted.
Think he would be getting as much crap if he had installed a 1100 hp turbo 3.8 V6?
I love this car and love seeing the swap. I still just do not like the exhaust.

Thanks! A lot of people also don't realize that cross-breeding in the American Automotive Industry is pretty common! Did some of you know that the engine in the infamous Ford Taurus SHO was a reliable Japanese motor from Yamaha?

Exactly what I'm thinking too.

I am naturally defiant, so I love the thought of popping the hood on that '68 and seeing car guys scoff, shake their heads or get riled up at the thought of a "dammed rice rocket" motor in a classic.

controversy you want controversy you got......dont get all defensive if someone digs at your car like some of the above posts (like Mr Rogue) when your getting exactly what you want.
