View Full Version : Popular Hot Rodding Readers' Rides Projects Wanted!

Right now, you’re probably “digging” snow, while your unfinished project sits happy as a clam in your garage. I want to give you some added motivation this winter to get that ride in finished form by spring, so here’s the deal: I want you to snap some digital pictures of your unfinished project, and send them to me. You’ll probably have to stand outside and shoot into your garage to make your car fit totally in the picture, but that’s ok. Engine on the stand, body on the rotisserie, fenders off, trans on the bench, interior stripped, body work in progress, “before” shots, rendering, send it all in.
So who qualifies, and who doesn’t? The answer is simple: if you’ve got a muscle car project that is not finished yet, or is being refurbished, or is being upgraded, you qualify. If you just bought a project and haven’t started, you qualify too, as long as you’ve got a specific plan. We like renderings too, so we can show readers what the end product will look like, but it’s not a requirement. Above everything else, we need good solid photography to print. Here are the guidelines:
-Get the whole car in the frame. Move stuff if you have to. It’s cool if you roll it outside.
-Turn on all the lights and use your flash. The more light, the better.
-No blurry shots! It helps to use a tripod or set the camera on something steady.
-Send key detail shots, like engine, interior, and special fabricated parts.
-If you’ve got a rendering, send it to us also (a digital copy only—we can’t return drawings).
-Include a detailed list of specs. The more detail, the better.
-Include your story! Who are you, and what’s making you build this? Why this style?
-Include a photo of you with your car (you’ll need someone to help you take this photo).
-Tell us how to contact you (daytime phone and email address). Do you have a website?
-Send lots of pictures! Put them on a CD, and include prints. Please, no emailed photos.
Send your photo CD, prints, specs, and cover letter to my editorial address: Source Interlink Media, attention: Johnny Hunkins—Reader Projects, 774 S. Placentia Ave., Placentia, CA 92870. In order to make the cutoff for the Reader Projects issue (August 2009), we need them no later than April 2nd. And remember, we will print EVERY car you send, as long as you follow the guidelines. And check this out: we’re picking one lucky unfinished project to photograph for our cover. We’ll even come to your house to shoot it!
Feel free to email me questions but please do not submit your projects electronically.

Just throwing it out there since you said you would print all that applied.

I have one for you but its not a chevy or a ford. :enguard:I guess my chances of publication are out. :) Its a Trans Am (commonly referred to/ misidentified as a Camaro). Its on the ground now, so i'll be taking some overall shots soon.

That's a great offer Liz, and everyone here deserves a shot at it. I got mine in a couple years ago and it was a real thrill. I'd love to submit again but it's someone elses turn. Good luck everyone. And thanks again Liz.

When I read this short blurb in my subscription I noticed it said that they would print "all" readers rides that were submitted for their next readers ride special. In the issue that they are setting up for it. Seem like he said he had a hard time choosing for the last article and thought about running all cars he received for the next time.
Says nearly the same thing again in this thread. I will snap away some pics and follow their criteria for submittle. Finger crossed.

First, "everything will print" are Johnny's words not mine, but he does out-rank me.
As for this being a drag racing magazine, I would double-check the last several issues and see how much turning cars are in there.
I have personally written up several Trans Ams in readers rides, and I am happy to write up more.
If its just your "finished" car is just being freshened up, I would need to see some pictures of some surgery, not just new seats and a gauge or two.
Keep in mind its ALL that meet the criteria in Johnny's eyes. We ran ALL of the readers rides we got for this year's contest that had a decent picture, so it looks good for this Under Construction "contest."

I missed the part that explains how we get the "motivation this winter to get that ride in finished form by spring". Sounds like rolling it out to take pictures is going to create more work for the procrastinating folk. I've been saying "finished by next month" for the past 2 years.
Prints are really necessary?

Just a funny note
I met this sweet heart at SEMA, in front of the Miller welding booth. We chatted, I acted like a gitty school kid, she gave me her business card. And we went our separate ways. Months later I'm flipping thru a bunch of business cards and I find her card, and it has her cell number on it. Maybe it was her work cell, but still it was HER cell number.
Thanks Liz

I have to say I'm disappointed that some of you are so discouraged by the requirements to be a part of this. I know some of your projects are buried, but is it really not worth pulling them out for 15 mins to get a nice picture?
When else are you pretty much guaranteed a spot in a magazine? I submitted information on my Camaro to CHP for 2 years before I got my 2X4-inch readers rides spot and I was ecstatic!
Where has the joy gone guys?

I don't think the requirements are out of line Liz. I think people are crazy for not jumping all over this great offer.
I thought about what Tony said earlier in this thread about letting those that haven't had a shot get in. But if people aren't sending in what you need, I can send another CD :smoke: So come on guys take some pics and send them in, if you haven't been already. Its not that hard to take a few pics and burn em to CD and throw it all in the mail to see your project like this:

The Nova pictures killed it for me. That is just on a different level. When you say work in progress I think about people at home building cars in their garage. That thing blows most of our stuff out of the water.
It is definitely badass.
My car is driving, but far from finished. I'll try to get some more pics this weekend and put something together, just isn't close to comparing to the Nova.

No, I think people are annoyed that you have to manually send in photos and a CD in the internet era. This isn't 1992.
It's like writing a letter to your friend and mailing it "snail mail" style vs sending an email.

It's not '92, but for them getting a CD is FAR easier than downloading pics. And it's faster, and easier to deal with and manipulate.
These folks are helping everyone out. We ought to be thankful for the interest. I for one will be packaging up some material for submission.

I completely disagree with your first statement about what is faster and easier. I don't know of anyone who uses CD's to store and manipulate pictures anymore. Not a soul.
I do agree with your 2nd statement however, and I did not mean to imply otherwise. This is a great opportunity for some people. Maybe it is a nice natural filter for them as many will not make the time (like me) to put photos on a CD and mail it.
I was mostly replying to the post directly before mine.

MAN! is this that hard? It seems simple to me, follow the directions of the person that is trying to put your rides in a magazine and they're there. If you don't want to follow her directions, don't, and your rides don't appear. Simple to me.

You're unfortunately looking at this like a home PC user. I call it the "Best Buy" mentality. Let's look at the reasons why submission via CD/DVD makes sense, shall we?
1) Legal. By having us submit via CD and mail, we are clearly providing legal permission to use our images in a commercial publication, and provide evidence that protects the magazines from getting in trouble.
2) Email. Have you considered the size of the attachments that you would have to submit via email? Example: Each of my images are more than 3mb in size. I may submit 50 images. That's 150mb. Most email systems have limits on file sizes of attachments. For very good reasons. So, my submission would get bounced, and Liz or somebody has to spend valuable time trying to troubleshoot why my submission didn't get in.
3) Bandwidth. Again - 150mb. Multiply that times the number of of potential submissions? Bandwidth aint cheap in the corporate world.
I'm retired from the military and am in the middle of my second career - which happens to be IT. I run a pretty large global IT operations group. You have no idea how many times people assume that what is best for them in their home MUST be best for the corporate/business world. Just not so. You can buy a 1TB consumer grade network storage device for a few hundred dollars. 1TB of Tier 1 SAN storage such as a Hitachi 9900 class or EMC will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Just real world examples.
I'd be willing to bet SERIOUS money that the intent for having us submit via CD is NOT to discourage people from participating.

I hear what you are saying, and even though I understand some of what you typed from a technical standpoint, I typed what I did because I know a lot of people felt that way but were not conveying it well in their posts.
I understand the legal aspect, and I understand the email issues (although gmail allows 20mb free per email - that is not too hard to accommodate). Do you really need to send 50 images?
Anyway, thanks for the thesis and your point of view. :)

Hi Liz, I am putting together a disc and am wondering what is really the best size for pics to be taken. I can set the camera to take pics in many different formats and if 300KB pics are too big I can make them smaller. I just want to make it easier on you so sizing pics isn't as time consuming.
Thanks

300kb is the minium size I would want. Remember that the internet runs on 72dpi and we run on 300dpi. Again, like Henry said, bigger is better when it comes to file sizes.
