I started looking at carb style intakes for the LS engine but still keeping it fuel injected, what kind of throttle body or adapter do these use?

the reason im looking at an intake like this is because im looking at doing an older trans am with a functional shaker hood, or would i just be farther ahead do use a regular style intake and throttle body and modify the shaker to fit?

Thanks

Shawn

Lots of places sell a four barrel style throttle body that is just the throttle plates. Bolts on just like a carb, looks very similar, and makes shaker hood and the like a breeze. an added benefit is that they are usually pretty short which really helps with hood clearance issues and tall intakes.

Fact of the matter is that carb-style intakes make more power than front throttle body-based intakes. Front style throttle-bodies came into use as automakers tried to get hood lines as low as possible to lower car body coefficient of friction (air drag) for better fuel economy.

Put your favorite throttle body on top (from Holley, FAST, Edelbrock, etc. etc.), add aftermarket EFI, and off you go.

ok maybe im missing something, for an LS1 why would you need EFI wiring? could you not use, for example, the edelbrock victor jr. manifold for the LS1 thats set up for fuel injection and hook up thier fuel rails, some injectors and a throttle body?

The Victor JR makes an EFi version for cathedral port (ls1 style) heads for about $320. The GMMP makes a version for both cathedral port and rectangle power (LS3/ls7) heads and i think they are something like $400 for EFI. You have to buy the special fuel rails for each intake which are like $100 or so.

You need to run EFI wiring to tell the injectors to fire. You have to run an LS1 computer with a painless or some sort of modified harness for your swap anyway, or you could go with a Megasquirt setup.

With the EFI manifold its slightly different internally than the carb manifold but looks identical minus the injector bungs. If you use a 4150 style throttle body (looks like the bottom of a holley carb but with a Throttle position sensor) you could run it just like any other carb air cleaner setup. It would owrk fine with your shaker.

Here's a great thread on an EFI Victor JR style intake swapping from a 90* elbow to a 4150 style and picking up 50rwhp. It also has some pics for you to see.

This request is why we came out with this piece. It allows you to run an aluminum carb. style intake while keeping the enhanced drivability of Drive By Wire and EFI.

Here are some pics of the adapters up close. They even mount your MAP and IAT sensors. In this pic, the lower adapter is not anodized, but the production pieces are anodized black.

Here is one that we did for a customer on an LS3 SS with a Vintage Air Front Runner installed.

Since we run a Speed-Density control strategy, we are able to run a setup like this since we don't have to package a Mass Air Flow Sensor.

For those who will wonder, the air filter attaches the same way it would on a carb. It uses a stud that threads into the throttle adapter ring.

A bit of a necrobump but.....

Any chance of packaging this sort of arrangement (not necessarily the MAST config above but perhaps another carb style efi intake) in a '68 Camaro with a flat hood?
