can some one tell me why no one uses a lq9 in their pt car. is there a reason for this? whats the deal with this engine? is a ls1 better?

Probably mostly because of weight. Alot of drag racers use the iron 6.0 block because it's cheap and strong but for the PT crowd why not spend a few hundred more to save 100lbs? The iron 6.0 block is $700 new and then LS2 block is $1000 new. So if you are building a new engine it's only another $300 bones.

Though for used engines a lq4 or lq9 would be cheaper than an LS2, but ls1s are cheaper than ls2s also.

I guess in my opinion if I'm going to spend tens of thousands to build a car and handling is a concern then a little extra to have a lighter engine is worth it. Now if only an aluminum pontiac block was as cheap as an ls2 block lol.

Alot of people do over on LS1tech.com actually. You will see more LQ4 engines in there than LQ9s though as LQ9s are rarer having flatop pistons resulting in a half a point higher compression. The LQ9s only came in Silverado SS's and SSrs i believe. But yeah the LS2 is 90lbs lighter than the iron block so most go with an aluimnum block for the few hundred extra is costs.

Yeah I see alot of lq4s on ls1tech.com but those guys are mostly into drag racing. I actually bought a lq4 long block for my truck on ebay for $250 :smoke: too bad it cost me $350 to ship. That's still way cheaper than you could get an LS2 for if someone were wanting a 6.0 and didn't care about weight.

lq9's also came in the escalade (like mine) I turned around and sold the access's, tranny, intake, oil pan, etc for the price i paid for the whole thing. getting basiclly a long block for free. yes its about 75 lbs heavier, but it can be bored out up to .060, the heads have the same ports as the ls6 heads with a little bigger chamber that you can mill down or leave as is and boost it higher. unless you're into serious competition I don't think 95% of us would be able to feel the difference with an additional 75lbs over the front wheels, remember you're also gaining from 5.7L to 6.0L.

I am putting in a Lq9/t-56/magnacharger in my 68. I got a 15k Lq9 with all accessories for 1000 bucks delivered to my door. It is a 6 bolt main, strong as ****. Yes, it is not as light as a ls1/2 but for the price....I am all about the budget.... Brian over at Magnacharger suggested I went with it for the value. I should have 500rwhp when i am done. I havent started it up yet..hopefully in the next 2 months, but I am already happy with the set up. It is a great value.

The LQ9 bottom end is the best bottom end in a Gen III motor... the rods are stronger, pistons are basically flat tops and with rod bolts you can spin the snout out of the thing. (8K)

The only issue is the weight but if you don't care that the block is just a heavy SBC block esentially you are good to go.

The 4.000" bore gives you all the opportunities as well, L92 and Dart heads both work well on it.

...according to the 08 GMPP catalog, I thought this might help someone...

The LQ4/LQ9 or Vortec 6000 is a V-8
truck/sport utility engine. It is a bored
version of the Vortec 5300 that displaces
6.0L from its 101.6mm bore and 92mm
stroke. The LQ4/LQ9 uses an iron block
and aluminum heads, and in production
form produces 300–325 hp and
360–370 lb.-ft. of torque. Available new
or remanufactured.

I just bought an LQ9 running for $100. It's not a low miler but I can rebuild it and end up with a stronger motor for cheap.

Does anyone know if you can overbore a LQ4/LQ9 more than an LS1 can be to +.010?

I'm running an LQ4 and LOVE the power. I wouldn't do it again just because by the time I swapped all the stuff over- I could have bought a complete motor that would fit. IE intake, front accessories
