Great show this year. I remembered to bring all my media cards and a fresh set of batteries for the digi-cam. I did a lot more snapping this year. Probably because I attended it alone due to scheduling conflicts with some friends and the fact that I'm in the middle of a major overhaul of our kitchen at the moment and this was the only chance I was going to get to go downtown for the show. It worked out nice though because I was able to take my time rather than be rushed through it. I also missed Jeff Schwartz by about 15 minutes over by the Pfaff Digital Rendering booth. They do some pretty good work. Kind of like what Kris Horten does. Also, be sure to check out the grey '68 Camaro convertible (pictures 34 and 35). This car belongs to Jeff Hanson, a sweet ride that will no doubt start getting some attention on the Message Boards as well as the magazines. I'll have some better pictures of it soon on my website.

Anyway...enjoy the show! (http://www.infamouscamaro.com/Autorama%2005.htm) :)

In my article "autorama I'm not impressed"

Per Tony's pictures, there was a few and I mean a few of the pro-touring style cars that deserve comment. The red Charger, very nice. The yellow Cuda, and the 50's yellow Corvette. All done first class.
As with Tony these cars caught my eye also.

There was also a 1970 red GTO pro-touring style convertible. Awesome detail. The guy hired to have the car restored from top to bottom at a cost of $130,000. Wow! For those doing it for a lot less you should feel pretty good about yourself right now. R.P.

I did not have time to list a few, and I mean a few of the pro-touring style cars that you took pictures of.
What's THAT supposed to mean?

Thanks for the pictures. Looks like there is a lot of stuff to grab your attention. That Foose car is unbelievable! Also nice to see that other cars that got media attention are there. I bet the detail on Sick Fish is something to feast on also. We'll wait to see more of the Camaro. Jack

Tony,
Thanks for the pictures!
Is this car the Foose entry?
I am just guessing this one or picture #43?, if not, which one is?
Thanks,

pretty nice to me...

and yet another Eleanor... I admit, I was pretty excited about these when
they came out, but now they seem just as restrictive as concours correct

Thanks for the great pics, I really enjoyed them.

I thought the 50(?) Caddy "speedster " and the 56 Ford pickup were outstanding, as well as the Foose machines.

The big Chevy truck with the America theme was awesome.

Yea, I was there, trying to educate myself on these Ridler cars.
I met several very nice people, one, Joe Suban with his son had 2 cars in Ridler top 8. The Blue and silver ones.
A boat load of engineering went into his cars, there were chrome rotors, which he'll change later and drive the car.
Also got a picture of me with Foose, who I met a few years ago on Power Tour.
Sorry I missed anyone who was there, Murray Pfaff has done a great job on renderings for me and I was at his booth for a while. I carpooled to Detroit with Jimi Day of Imagine Motorsports and the Poison Dart Owner.
I also bumped into Matt King of Hot Rod Magazine. I enjoyed the show even though there wasn't a bunch of Pro- touring cars. There was stuff to be learned from the workmanship on the Ridler cars.

I would also like to know who won

I heard Chip Foose's car won again. I haven't confirmed it though.

If it's true...this is one I'm going to have to disagree with. It was a stunning car, but he's done that car before. It's almost a re-hash of the Grand Master. There were other cars competing that were every bit as nice but a lot more original.

Yeah it was the Foose car....goes to show that a name can count for some of the points. It was nice, but I actually liked this one more.

I got about 330 pics of the show...some came out ok, some not ok (kind of dark). As soon as I find a way to display all of them, I will attempt a post.

Tony, Sorry I missed you at the show. I was looking for the Pro-Touring shirst, but there were too many people there at opening. It's funny you saw Chris upstairs, I ran into Courtney the same way by the rat rods downstairs. She was standing by herself looking at cars when my fiance and I saw her. Very nice and approachable person.

VWrag, I agree with you, it is much harder to make something you can see (nuts & bolts & rivets) look good that flat sheet metal. Just a different opinion, nothing against Foose.

JoshStratton

Yeah. That was nothing against Foose. I think he is really good at what he does...maybe the best. I just think that the guys who judge those shows year after year look at the same things and won't grow with the times. Foose's WAS one of the best at the show and might have deserved the win. I just thought it was a little similar to what he has done in the past (like trapin said) and not as original (although that car has AMAZING details that pop out if you got the chance to look at it a long time). I just thought the one I posted earlier (I really wish I got that car's info sheet written down) was a little nicer.

This truck was not eligable to win the riddler! It has already been shown priar to the autorama! Eric Pratt at Pinkees rod shop built that truck! Very nice

Oh I didn't know they had to be first timers. Did it win anything?

Yup, Chipper won it. Here's a link to more pics. It's a bit over half way down the page...

http://www.streetrodderweb.com/events/0503sr_detpg3/

I think that car is beautiful, just wish I could see more of the suspension, etc. I remember on one of the TLC/Discovery auto soaps last year Chip backed out of the competition between four builders to finish the cars for the 2004 Autorama. He refused to rush the car. They talked breifly about the fabrication and detail that was going into the car and it was unbelievable. I think that's the stuff the judges saw that pushed his car past the others.

Thats cool, the car looks real good, I hope they do a RIDES episode on it.

The truck won 20,000 at the starbird show in tulsa, Ok. He also took second at the roadster show earlier this year! I am not sure if it won anything at Detroit

I drove from Columbus to Pittsburgh to go to thera Autorama .I must say your pics turned out better than mine.I drove over to see Sick Fish in person and try to meet Troy in person....no such luck.Chicane is still a bada#$ ride.My biggest complaint about Sick fish and Chicane is you can't get close enough to REALLY check out the details. Thankz for the pics at detroit ,some really nice cars.

I just spokie with Blackie that runs the Fresno Autorama and he metioned that the owner of the car Chip Builded metioned to him
that the cost for the build was 1.6MM!!!, They had 20 people working on the car for the last 2 month, 18 hrs days at time and 1/2. That really adds up quickly. The cost to detail the car alone was $50,000.

I was actually standing next to the owner of that car while he was talking to some guy at the show....I wasn't sure who he was until I saw the winners pics (I thought maybe he was Chip's dad but couldn't remember what he looked like. One of the guys standing with him looked like a younger Chip...brother maybe?). The guy he was talking to was saying that he was with Chip 2 weeks ago and the car was in pieces still. That in itself is unbelievably amazing....the guy can certainly pull miracles. Kind of expensive for a 4000lb paper weight though.

That depends on the person who owns the car. There is a local guy here who has a collection of these mega-buck hot rods, including at least one Ridler winner (94 or 95 blue fenderless Ford coupe). There is a nice local show put on by a church that he brings a couple of his toys to. The first thing that amazed me is that he parks them right on the grass, with no ropes, no displays - just out in the open like everyone else's. Then to top it off last year, the wife and I were standing near the main intersection (close to his little corner) and he comes rumbling by in the car!

You guys may have seen the car before. It is a metallic/pearl lime green lowboy that was in BFG print ads for a while. The guy's name is Fred Warren. I have a magazine article about the car. It is a Kugel "kit" called the Muroc, of which ten (and ten full fendered Muroc II's) were supposed to be built. Comes with a Marcel's alum body and Kugel chassis for the low, low, price of $110K!!! So you can imagine what the minimum turn key cost would be with all the high-dollar goodies and top-name builders thrown at it. He had California Street Rods do his. I have a lot of respect for this guy because he treats it like, ummm, a car.
