rookie wheel question

my 1970 Road Runner came with steel 14"x6" wheels from the factory .... backspace is 4".

If I go to a larger wheel, say 17", would I need to stick with the 4" of backspacking ?

Depends upon the width of wheel you would like to use and how much tire you plan on running.

The best thing you can do is measure. You may be able to find someone with a similar setup to what you plan on running and you could use that as a starting point.
