WOW. Lots of GTO wheel threads going on here! Are the GTO's catching on in the PT world? Anyhow mine is a 67' GTO. Everything is stock right now. Does anyone know what the maximum size 17" wheel/backspace/tire i can comfortably run front and rear on this car? I havent gotten under and measure yet because im in Iowa and its freezing out! Anyone know? Also im on a budget so im thinking im going to go with vintage wheel works V-40's are these a good wheel?

I ran across this article when looking for my 70. Doesn't provide as many options for the 64-67 A-Bodies but might give you a general idea. I still think you would want to measure twice, buy once.

I run a 17x8 with 5" BS on the front with a 245/45/17 and I have no issues at all. My car sits pretty low, about 5" under the engine crossmember. When I ran it at 4", I would have a rub if i cut the wheels to hard and hit a bump like going in and out of uneven entrances. But that is really low.
In the rear I run a 295/45/18 with a 18x9.5 with a 5.5 BS. I had to do some pretty serious reconstruction of the outer wheelhouse to get that on there though. The inner is stock and the frame is stock. I have about 1/2" of clearance back there. No rubs out back either and they are tucked!

Thanks gearheads78! I really appreciate it.
I finally broke down this fall and took the car completely down. It now sits off the frame awaiting blasting. The frame is now boxed and all the rusty body mounts are fixed. Soon it will be ready for powercoat but I am going to wait till I get all the sheet metal work done on the body before I have it coated. I want to do the sheetmetal work with the body mounted to the frame. I am just anal about that I guess...
Don't mean to hijack!

Alex,
I'll be running a similar setup on my 66 Chevelle (which is similar to a GTO in wheel fitment im' guessing). Do you have more pictures of your car? It's awesome!
I'd really like a side view since i've been struggling with tires sizes but I think you've hit a good look!!

Here is what my combo will look like for my 66 Cutlass. Should be very similar to 66/67 GTO and Chevelle.
18 x 10 with 285-40-18 and 18 x 9 with 255-40-18

*DISCLAIMER* Im in no way suggesting this will work for you or your car. I'm just posting what I ended up going with to help people get in the ball park. My rear axle is not a stock Pontiac unit and I think its a bit different on the width.
Since this popped up and in case others end up searching this i'm going to post up what I ended up going with. I can say that the rear wheel wells are tight in the '67 GTO. Where Iv'e been told some Chevelles can get away with 10" wheels and wider tires Im positive I couldn't. There's no way I would have gotten 10" wheels back there and even 275's would have been do-able but tight.
I ended up with
-18x8 with a 5" BS and 245/45/18 Nitto555's in the front on a Kore3 C6 Z51 front brake kit. I have no clearance issues. The Kore3 Kit narrows the track width by .25" per side which I found is a MILE when talking fender to tire clearance with the taller 45 series tire. I tried them on for fun with my Stock D52 front brake kit before swapping and they hit the rear fenderwell opening. The Kore3 brake kit narrowed it up like it was supposed to and I have no clearance issues, as I suspected I wouldn't after the brake swap.
-18x9 on a 5.75" BS and 265/50/18 Nitto555's in the rear on an "LS1" conversion 2002 Camaro 12" Rear brake kit. I had to do a little massage with a BFH in a couple of the pinch points but I don't seem to have any rubbing or clearance issues that ill need to deal with, even with very hard corners and at full compression. I did end up going with a .25" Billet specialties spacer in the rear to get them spot on.
If anyone has questions let me know. Here is a pic of the car after I got done last fall. I still need to do a bit of work on the ride height and the car was filthy when I took the pic but oh well..... ill get that squared away this spring.
