I will have the fuel tank out of my car and im looking to upgrade my fuel system while im cleaning and detailing my under carriage as well. Im undecided on weather to use a mechanical pump or an electric pump. What size fuel line should i use? I currently have a mostly stock 455 olds now but im collecting parts for a 500 stroker, my goal is to run as close to 11.50 but i dont want to put a cage in the car. I only want to build one fuel system so i need it to get the job done. I would prefer not to use an electric pump if i dont have too. Reliabilty is an issue as i will be driving this car on power tour. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

My opinion would be to go electric. Start with the pickup tube in the tank it should be at least 3/8", or better yet sump the tank, if a new tank isn't in the budget. From the sump to a Mallory 140 run a short piece of #10AN through a 100 micron filter to the inlet of the pump. Run #8AN from the outlet of the pump through a 10micron filter up to a return style regulator and #8AN back to the tank. The mallory 140 is a good pump, its fed quite a few 600+ hp engines with reliability. The aeromotive A-1000 is also a good pump. :twothumbs

Here's best mechanical pump made for your car, made in the good ol' USA by RobbMc:

Robb sells both a 550HP and 1100HP pump for the most popular V8 engines. The 550HP can be upgraded to 1100HP if you ever decide to, in your case I'd start out with the 1100HP so you're not on the edge. One of my buddies runs the 1100HP on a 9-second Pontiac GTO, his car is pictured on Robb's site.

I run one of the 550HP pumps on my street 455 Pontiac, it makes less than 450 HP. Ran a 1/2 hard line to the pump from my sumped stock tank using one of Robb's big pre-filters right off of the sump.

I'm also using a vapor return line to keep vapor lock at bay since my car is now 100% street, you could utilize your old stock fuel line for the vapor return. I would consider the vapor return a must-have on the street, my setup has given me over 1500 trouble-free street miles so far.
