View Full Version : We tested a car today that I think you guys will like...

This thing may not be street legal but it is BAD ASS!

We did skidpad and slalom testing.. the numbers were off the charts.

We also did most of a photoshoot. Unfortunatly we were getting crazy winds at California Speedway (70-80mph) so we couldn't finish the shoot. I plan on going up to NorCal to get the glamor shots.

The Camaro has a 303 cui engine and all the best race parts. It was specifically built for the track and auto-x events. A very cool ride and the guys that brought it down were super cool. Unfortunatly the winds caused the SCCA to cancel the auto-x event this weekend.

Look for the full feature and testing results in an upcoming issue of Camaro Performers.

Looks like it'll be a good article. I will enjoy reading it I'm sure.
I would love to see it race against other vintage road racers like the 77 Swede Savage Challenger and the Dan Gurney AAR 'cuda.

I wonder if it will be at Coronado Speed Festival at NAS North Island (Saint Diago) this October.
Can you ask what events they have in mind when you go up?

So how fast is it going? Check out the front spoiler. Looks like a few more braces are in order..... Perhaps blocking off the primary grill area creates more high-pressure down low.

It's that way from hitting autocross cones at high speed. I saw a guy destroy a fiberglass fender once by hitting a huge cone about 2 feet tall at high speed, the fender was GONE! It was a little car, an MG.

Tony, it really wasn't as fun as it could have been. The wind was screaming at about 60-70mph at times. It was one of the worst Santa Ana wind conditions I've seen in a long time.
If the car had been local to us we would have re-scheduled for another time, but since Milt and the guys came a good distance, we decided to do what we could.
The testing went great, but we weren't able to get all the photos we needed.

I figured I could finish the shoot on Milt's Camaro then. Wanna help?

It's a 1st gen SBC with a carb. It's got a pretty long stroke for it's combo, it's not a DZ302 style engine.

Way back when I worked for Goodies (then Speed Merchant) I saw the car progress. It was a 7+ year process to build and literally started as a bare rear clip. I did some early design work and hunted down a lot of "stuff" for that car and LOVE IT more than any that I own.

It actually moved under its own power (for more than a few feet) at one of the private auto-x's my car club puts on

The bore and stroke are B=3.95" and S=3.150". The engine is based of a non-siemeesed bore BowTie block, MSD crank trigger ignition has a 8K rpm chip in it! I built it for as much torque as possible under the cubic inch limitations. Its 13 to 1 comp. ratio, small (200cc) runner heads flowed 313cfm @ .600". Has cam drive dry sump and Jesel belt drive roller cam (secret spec's) it made just shy of 600hp on the dyno.

No worries, Steve and it was a hopeful thought. Dave and I plan on also coming down for Goodguys in March (Costa Mesa) with the '73. You might think about coming up for the autocross on 2/22 to get some seat time in the new, improved, and handling-happy Penny.

Hey Steve,

Do you have any specs on the tire/wheel combination on the Camaro? They look like 16" Bogarts but I was wondering how wide/tall the front and back wheels and tires were? Also, it looks like he went with a taller rear tire when he bought the new Goodyear slicks with the Yellow lettering... It looks like he went from bias-ply slicks to radial slicks...

My guess would be the front wheels would be roughly 16"x12" and the rears maybe 16"x13"...

If they are Goodyear Radial Slicks he is probably running 25.5x12x16 in the front and maybe 28.5x14.5x16 in the rear...

Goodies1
01-22-2009, 09:50 AM
wheels are all 16 x 12" (CP Class rule) the tires are bias road race 25 x 13 x 16 front and 27 x 14 x 16 rear.

Hey Lowend,

VERY nice pictures indeed for a phone camera!

The local autocrosses that I would probably attend aren't SCCA-sanctioned events anyway... I am just building my car for fun and maximum WOW-factor... I know I would be stuck in some "modified" class where ever I go. I would just stick with whatever the recommended wheel width was dictated by the tire size.

With the Wilwood Pro Spindles I have put on the car the only extra pieces I have to buy for a 16" wheel swap would be a second brake rotor "hat" and a set of 12.90" rotors. There is a "spacer" on the caliper mounting bolts that is used on the 14" rotors and it is removed to work with the smaller diameter 12.90" rotors... :)

I'm SORRY!! I am really NOT trying to jack the thread. It's all about the awesome Camaro!!!
