Hi guys, I just signed up for the 09 Power Tour after being harassed by my buddy who does the long haul every year. I am looking for any tips or advice to get my 69 Camaro ready for the long haul. Thinking about a TKO 600 but wondering if I can make in with a Muncie and 3:55 rear. Thanks:)

Those cars were everyday transportation with those gears and no overdrive from the factory so no reason it would not make it now if all is good.

We have all got so used to hearing 1600 RPMs on the higway, we think the engine is going to blow when we hear 2500RPM. I remember back in the day at 18 years old a couple Friday after work bonzi booty call runs from Florida to Chattanooga with 3.73s and a disconnected speedo. I knew I was running 70MPH when I was turning 3500 RPMS. 3500 RPMS was the least I ran for 9 hours was the least I ran as I was in a hurry!

I did some long trips with my muncie and 4:10 rear. With my foot as a cruise control I managed 14 mpg with a roller 327 and 650 double pumper.

If you can get the tko 600 in before you go you will love it on the road and performance wise. I've got it in my 70 Camaro with 3:73s and a 400 horse 350 and I got 21-21 mpgs on the last 3 long hauls. At 70 I'm right at 2,000. And now I can hear my stereo. I run it hard on the whole tour and all over Texas and all I can say is "It's awesome" Good luck. If you don't get it by the trip, what you have will work. As they said they were designed to do it before and will do it now... Be blessed, Mark B

Hey Mark I will trade weather forecast with you today(foot of snow)! I ordered a TKO 600 from Keisler on friday. Seems like an overdrive is a key component to finishing the tour as a long hauler.:1st:

I did my first PT long haul in my 65 El Camino with a 327/four speed with 3.08s. That year it started in Lincoln which is two plus days drive for me. My little 327 very seldom saw less than 3500 and the last 720 miles home was done in 10 hours, with only two short stops. It did another long haul since then and the engine is still untouched now, just in a different car. I wouldn't hesitate to do another long trip with it. By the way, the El Camino is now ls2 powered with a T56 and get's 23 MPG. The TKO would be a great improvement.

Hey Mike, everyone that I have talked to agree that the TKO or T56 was the best upgrade purchased for their vehicle. My friend has a TKO in a 69 Chevelle, and it was frustrating with both of us doing 80mph me at 4000rpm and him at 2000rpm smiling at me.:)Dante'

I did my first LONG HAUL in 2003 with my 63 splitwindow vette ..327-340hp muncie 4 speed and 3.90 gears ...

I made it the whole way ...but i learned a lot of do's & donts.

Its great to look cool but now i want to be comfortable too !

AIR CONDITION would have been nice in TX.

plenty of room for luggage , tools , a cooler or snacks is a plus.
The 2nd year we did the long haul in 05 was in my 69 Pontiac Custom S ( like a GTO )
350 , bench seat , powerglide , and my better half by my side ....SOOOO MUCH NICER
We even picked up some luggage for the Bassani exhaust team at one of the hotels because they didnt have room for it in there mustang.
( we didnt know them , just offered to help get there stuff to the next venue for them )

Not sure about this year as far as which car...
BUT ITS COMMING TO SOUTH BEND-IN, right here at home so hope to see a lot of you guys there !

The TKO will fix that issue. Do it soon so you have plenty of time to chase bugs. Go with a hyd. clutch too, you will love it.

Anybody out West need a car hauled to Power Tour ? My car is already out there and my guy is wanting to do Power Tour himself. He has a two car trailer.
